I just had a pole dancing class for my future sister-in-law's bachelorette party with 8 girls total and all I can say is ahhhh-mazing! There are 8 poles total in each class so be ...

Interesting. I did a search to read these reviews again, after taking a really awful hiphop class at Shockra. I saw the one review that panned the class, which really confirms my ...

The best place for dance lessons in New York? 2/2/2009

I have been taking hip hop lessons with Jessica Hayden @ Shockra for some time now. She is the most amazing instructor, there are many wonderful dancers but when it comes to teaching it requires people to be of a different league. Pros: Talented Instructors who know how to teach... more

Awesome dance classes, wonderful instructors!! 1/6/2009

Jessica's intro to hip-hop dance class is great on so many levels. She has the patience and enthusiam of a saint! After a long day at the office, you arrive to her class worn out and leave in such a great mood. Her class structure of creating small group classes is so respectful of the begniner. To top that she includes a personal lesson in the already under priced workshop series. She understands dance and is an effective communicator, the former would be useless without the latter. Her analogies are great and will break your mental block on dancing. Take any of her classes for if anything just to me an amazing person in NYC! Pros: Small Classes, Flexible Scheduling for individual clases, patient, kind, professional instructors more

Kettlebell and Pole Class at Shockra Studios 12/16/2008

I absolutely LOVED this class! It was a great way to work out in a fun way! The Kettlebells portion kicked my booty and the pole dancing part worked muscles I didn't even know existed! Vicki was a great instructor! She really knows what she's doing and is very enthusiastic about her job. I looked forward to class every week! I can't wait for another session. This class was definitely worth the money :) Pros: Instructors, atmosphere more

Kettlebell/Pole Excellent Class!!! 12/11/2008

What's a kettlebell anyway...was my initial question when I walked into the ketllebell/pole class instructed by Vicky Drukker. It wasn't long after I learned the physically challenging yet beneficial attributes of this Russian exercise. Pole dancing (which is amazing!!!) is another experience in itself, so the combination of the two left my body feeling ripped, yet amped and totally excited about the week to come. I highly recommend this class for anyone who is looking for a real workout with s** appeal! I loved it so much, I even got a pole for my house :o) more

Great Experience 11/30/2008

I tried this studio out after finding them on citysearch. I was nervous at first because i didnt know what to expect.....BUT IT WAS AMAZING. Marlo was the instructor and she was super nice, and cracked jokes every once or so often. I got an all around great vibe, and a great workout . I cant wait to go back again! : ) Pros: Price and instructor more

Hip-hop: the real deal 11/29/2008

I studied hip-hop with Jessica Hayden, who owns Shockra Studios. It was genuinely one of the best experiences of my life and I plan on continuing my studies there as long as possible. Jessica can DANCE. This is not an aerobics class with some hip hop moves thrown in; it's the real deal (although clearly busting out on the dance floor for an hour straight will get you in shape. Jessica can DANCE, and she taught my class (her absolute beginner class at that) how to DANCE. But what I really got out of it was an outlet to express myself through dance, and I think that Jessica encourages that kind of personal expression for all her students, especially through the free one-hour one-on-one lessons that came with the cost of the class. She encourages students to learn the moves intellectually and then let go and feel the music, improvise, and grow into their own style. She ends each email with ""love, live, give"" and I think she lives up to that aspiration - encouraging it in others. Pros: personalized instruction from supportive experts at reasonable rates more

Shockra Studio - awesome hip hop and dance studio 11/11/2008

Before taking classes at Shockra Studio, I often felt shy, uncomfortable, and awkward on the dance floor. I didn't feel that I knew what I was doing, and often I believe what I felt on the inside portrayed on the outside. I stumbled upon Shockra studio while searching for dance lessons online. I took my first hip hop 6 week series course with Jessica about a year ago, and been a member of shockra studio ever since. She really explained the moves and gave a lot of one on one attention during her workshop. Also the moves were contemporary and translatable to the dance floor at a club or party. She really broke down all the body isolations and smooth transitions which I never understood prior to taking her class. My dancing skills have tremendously improved since I took hip hop classes with Jessica. I no longer feel insecure on a dance floor. I now feel confident and comfortable with my dancing. I would strongly recommend her class to anyone that is looking to learn and/or improve their dance skills or feels that they are in the same state of mind I was in. Pros: excellent studio, teachers and classes more

Love Shockra and love Jessica- She is the best dance teacher! 11/11/2008

So I signed up for the Shockra Absolute Beginner Hip Hop classes in October. I had almost no dance experience but really wanted to be able to dance at clubs. I went into it kind of nervous. Jessica made me feel comfortable right from the start and I learned so many new dance moves. She really built on a core set of steps which made learning and building upon those steps so much easier than other dance classes Ive taken. As part of the absolute beginner classes, you also get one private lesson. I used to mine to have Jessica teach me moves Id seen other girls do at clubs- so worth it! Im signing up for her Level II Class as well. All in all, an amazing class! Jessica is a really great teacher! Pros: Jessica, Availability of Different Classes; Absolute Beginner really means absolute beginner more

Best dance studio!!!!! 11/10/2008

Jessica is absolutely amazing!!!! I took the beginner hip hop class and LOVED every minute of it (even when I couldn't get the steps down) She really breaks down the steps and takes the time to help you get through and diffculties. The studio has a very comfortable and warm feeling. My class was very small so we were able to develop friendships. I highly recommend this studio and will continue to take different classes!!! Pros: Instructor, Location, Price, Music :) more

Asolutely in looove with Shockra Studio 11/4/2008

I'm taking ballet class with Jessica for about more then one year and I just love it. \r I got there with no experience at all, I've never been a dancer and I'm not pretending to be a ballerina. \r She is just amazing, she is making you feel very confortable with somenthing that is not that easy to learn, no judgment at all just a very easy place to be and where you can really enjoy learning a new dance technique no matter you chose ballet, pole or hip hop. \r Pros: great staff Cons: none is perfect as it is more

The Best Time Ever!!!! 10/26/2008

I loved this place!!!!!!!\r I had my 26th birthday party at SHOCKra Studio and it was the best!\r All the dance studios in NYC that I visited were not that big and this studio was one of the more spacious ones that I saw. They had 6 poles and were willing to accommodate up to 20 people ( we would of had to share poles) . However, in the end my party only turned out to be 6 people and it worked out just fine. \r Everyone had their own pole and we danced the night away to some great music.\r The staff was the best! Thanks to Jessica Hayden who bent over backward to schedule the set up of my party and Marlo Fiske who was our pole dance instructor for the night.\r Marlo has SKILLZ.\r She was amazing and very patient wit us. \r They also allowed me to bring some sangria, which also kept us going through the night.\r We all plan on going back to either a class or setting up another party. \r I highly recommend this Shockra Studio. Pros: EVERYTHING more

best. studio. ever. 10/23/2008

I?m taking the 6-week beginner hip-hop class and it?s a blast!! Jessica is hands down one of the best teachers ive ever had - she brings a great energy to every class and makes everyone feel very comfortable. The class sizes are small which is great, and the studio is not intimidating at all. Overall, its been a very positive experience and a lot of fun. I would recommend this class to anyone, male or female. Try it and you?ll be hooked! more

Finally, a studio that's a non-threatening environment for adults to dance, get a great workout, and have fun! 10/17/2008

After several unsuccessful attempts at a gym membership, I decided I needed to exercise in a way that I knew I would enjoy, instead of feeling like a gerbil on a wheel. I have always loved to dance and had decent training all the way through my teenage years, but I hadn't stepped into a dance studio in 15 years and let's just say I'm pretty out of shape! But I thought, this is New York, right? There must be a million dance studios where an adult semi-beginner can have a myriad of choices. In a city where professionals abound and dance studios seem geared toward producing future Broadway or Radio City performers, however, I had a hard time finding a studio that was truly a non-intimidating environment for adult beginners who just wanted to enjoy dancing for some exercise and self-expression. Then I stumbled upon SHOCKra Studios. I was so relieved that everyone else was just like me - regular people with regular jobs who just wanted to try something different. Not only did I feel 100% comfortable from the moment I stepped in, and not only was I impressed with how easy-going yet professional the instructors were, and not only is it everything I wanted in a dance studio, but I've also lost weight since I started class! The instructor (and owner), Jessica, is so engaging and energetic. She's really good at helping you improve your technique, no matter what level you're at. Our classes have a mix of people, from zero dance experience to former dancers like myself who just haven't done it in ages. Everybody loves it and everybody improves. It's non-intimidating and tons of fun, and it's the highlight of my week! Pros: Class size, professional instruction, comfortable environment Cons: haven't found any yet! more

A different kind of work out 10/16/2008

I attended a pole dancing class with Marlo on a Friday 9/19/08. It was a very interesting experience to say the least. Marlo was very knowledgeable and moved like a real pro. We did a short warm up and then jumped right in to techniques and tricks. She showed us different spins and how to climb. The big draw back was that the class was quite large (about 10) so we did not get a lot of ""pole time"" I would suggest trying a weekday class for more one on one attention. Pros: great work out Cons: large class size more

Wonderful experience 10/15/2008

I attended a pole dancing class with Vicky and I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed. It was thoroughly enjoyable. I went in expecting your standard winding and grinding, but this class included that and so much more. It was a full bodywork out and I could hardly move the next day. Vicky was very patient and she provided excellent one on one attention when needed. I would suggest going during the week so you can experience more time on the pole. Pros: one on one attention Cons: class size more

A whole lot of work out for your s e x y 9/19/2008

I had a blast during the Pole Dancing class with Vicky. She was so sweet and eager to teach. I must say I am clearly not as limber or ""sexual"" as I thought I was but she surely had the patience to get me to the peak of my s e x y. My only minor issue is the size of the class so I would recommend going on a weekday when there are less people there. My main surprise with this class was that there was soooo much workout. The next day I was tremendously sore. I definitely will go again. Pros: Great workout! Cons: Small space for class size more

Put on your dancing shoes... 9/12/2008

Best money I have ever spent! Jessica is a thoughtful and patient instructor who makes you feel at ease no matter what your skill level. I often find myself counting down the days until my next lesson. Marlo's Wednesday night Hip Hop classes are also highly recommended. Pros: Instructors, resonable rates Cons: small reception space more

I was a dancefloor dud... until I met Jessica at SHOCKra 9/2/2008

For anyone who, like me, has been socially crippled by their inadequacy on the dancefloor, Jessica offers a unique method of teaching how to cut it in night clubs. Her approach is analytic, and with great patience she takes her students through each component move in isolation, until they are comfortable to handle themselves in social dancing situations. If you have no natural rhythm or, like me, you were too into punk or chilling to ever learn how to dance, it's not to hard or too late to learn! So don't be a wallflower or embarrassed to get onto the dancefloor. You can even take private one-on-one lesson if you're shy. Pros: smart approach, anyone can learn more

Great place to learn samba 8/25/2008

If your looking for a place to learn to dance, get in great shape and have fun do not look any further, this is the place for you. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Great studio 8/24/2008

I highly recommend Jessica's classes to anyone. I have been taking classes with her for the two years or so, and I always have a wonderful time. The team at the studio is amazing, and they are great teachers. more
