Not breastfeeding friendly or knowledgeable as they claim 6/26/2010

Not breastfeeding friendly, nurses are rude. Our son and our daughter were both born at Seton on 38th street. They claim to be breastfeeding friendly- I daresay, that is in phrase only. NO problems with our daughter's birth there 2.5 years before. For our youngest son, what a change. While they updated the rooms, they need to do the same with the attitudes and the beliefs held by the nurses. Our son was born at 8:00 pm. I didn't get him back until 12:15 am. At that time, they came back with him and said that his glucose was low and that we needed to supplement with formula. I was stunned and responded that he hadn't even had a chance to nurse yet. Shortly thereafter, another nurse came in with 2 pre-made bottles of formula and asked us which we preferred. Neither was my response- again, after I refused the first time. I have breastfed 2 other babies exclusively and knew that he only needed to nurse and he would be fine. They treated me so badly for asking that we try to breastfeed first. He nursed frequently that night and was fine by morning. The next day, he had jaundice. Again, they pushed formula. Again, I said no. They were annoyed and treated me very badly for my choices. I told them that jaundice can be normal and that he was nursing frequently. We stayed an additional night in the hospital and he was fine. I didn't see a lactation consultant until the second day in the hospital- she wasn't summoned though I had requested one. When I had asked about syringe feeding instead of bottles- they had no idea why I would ask such a thing. I didn't want to impede the breastfeeding. They didn't seem to know anything about the natural course of breastfeeding. Frustrated, I spent a good deal of my time caring for my own baby and feeling NO support. Grateful for my experiences with my other 2 children, I wonder what happens to new moms who do not have that experience and are pushed into formula? While this hospital claims to be breastfeeding friendly, they are not. Their first course of action when there are issues is to push formula. Pros: Labor and delivery nurses are wonderful Cons: Nurses are rude, not breastfeeding friendly, lack of support more

Be sure to double check your bill 1/21/2010

They will charge you for things they didn't do. Specifically they charged me for four IV's when I didn't have one. Also they run a scam where they bill extra and call it a physicians bill. It's set up so no insurance company will cover it. You will always have to pay the full cost. But I've been told that if you haggle with them over the bill, they will take less money. It's supposed to be a 'Christian' hospital. Seton Austin Medical. Giving a bad name to Christians everywhere. Cons: AWFUL BILLING SCAMS more

Unbelievable Cost 5/16/2009

Over $10,000 in CT charges with no firm diagnosis and no warning on cost of procedure. Took 5 minutes. Specialist later told me wrong exam was done anyway. Insurance company then said general cost for procedure is less than 1/10th what Seton Austin charged. Guess I'm lucky they didn't bill $100,000... Pros: Can't think of any... in shock from cost Cons: Crazy crazy crazy prices more

TOO expensive 11/11/2008

Great ER, but BOY is it expensive. Waited 30 min (not bad for an ER) I knew what I had but needed antibiotics, i was charged around $2,000. Thank God I had insurance but still had to pay around 350 dlls. Too expensive!!!!! Pros: fast, no patients Cons: 2expensive more

Refuse all CT scans at Seton even if you have insurance -- $11,250 for undiagnosed stomach pain 8/1/2008

I went in with abdominal pain and they did not find anything wrong. They sent me a total bill of $11,250. There were many charges but the three largest were $1600 Visit Fee / $4400 CT Scan / $4100 CT Scan. Accoding to American Medical Association Medicare reimbursement rates (as per their website) the rates for Medicare are $109 Visit Fee / $343 CT Scan / $337 CT Scan. BIG DIFFERENCE. What I should have done: Gone to a primary care physician ($300) and had him send me to an outpatient clinic which would have charged me $600 for each CT scan for a total of $300 + 2x$600 = $1500. I have insurance (Aetna) but even with insurance I ended up paying $6250 (Aetna paid $5000). REFUSE ALL CT SCANS AT SETON. Instead, go to a primary care physician and request a referral to an outpatient clinic. Pay $1500 NOT $11,250. Pros: Near my house Cons: Egregious cost -- $11,250 for undiagnosed stomach pain more

Beware of the Cost (and cleanliness) of the Emergency Room! 3/31/2008

Late last year I had a sharp pain in my left side and went to the emergency room at Seton. I was in the ER a total of 90 minutes and really received no treatment other than being told to go home and given a prescription for some pain medication.I was simply shocked when I received a copy of the bill for this 10 minutes of 'medical advice'. It was over $11,000 for Seton's ER alone and another $1,000 for actually speaking to the doctors. The CT Scan alone was in excess of $7,900 when I had an almost identical procedure performed literally across the street a few weeks later at the Heart Hospital of Austin for under $200.\r \r I thought there must be some kind of mistake - less than 90 minutes in the ER, one quick CT scan, sent home without anything other than a standard prescription for $12,000+ and asked for a detailed invoice. I was told that even though there was a single CT scan performed (and obtained a copy of the records from the radiology department - where there was only one image), they were able to see both my kidney and my bladder (two separate body parts!) on the same scan and they were entitled to charge *twice* at $3,400 a time because the radiologist spent two or three seconds looking at two spots on the CT scan image instead of one - I kid you not, that was the explanation for how they justified charging for two separate CT scans when only a single image was obtained.\r \r I don't think I have ever received less value for money for anything in my life. I would never voluntarily use Seton's services again - $12,000+ for a dirty (as in disgusting) ER, 10 minutes of medical attention with nothing beyond 'go home and see if everything is ok in a couple of days', and charging an all ready *extremely* overinflated CT scan price twice (which at the end of the day was only glanced at by the doctor who sent me home) because there was more than one part of the body captured on the image.\r \r BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE! more

AVOID!!! If they don't let you die, they will rip you off!!!! 3/14/2008

I went in with a cut finger. I was told they could bandage it or put in a couple of stitches.\r \r I didn't have insurance so I asked how much for the stitches - I was told around $300.\r \r I opted for the stitches, and when I was leaving, they asked me to propay towards the bill, I paid $300.\r \r A few week latter, I get an additional bill for $400 for the doctor, and another bill for an additional $870 for the ER (my $300 prepay also went towards the ER).\r \r So my cut pinky finger ended up costing me $1600 NOT the $300 I was told.\r \r It appears that they charge you $1200 dollars just for the pleasure of being in the ER! \r \r What a disgrace - I hope the people that run this place all go too Hell! Cons: They rip you off! more

Don't have a Baby here! 7/22/2006

We delivered our baby at Seton Central (38th Str) and didn't have a very good experience with the night nurses. They do not seem to understand the benefits of breast milk and will insist on supplementing with formula. They woke us several times throughout the night telling us that the breast milk was not enough for the baby and that we needed to supplement with formula. When we said no, we wanted to breast-feed again, they called the pediatricians telling them that we were not being cooperative. They told us we were endangering our baby by not supplementing. They were mean and uncaring. The doctor came in the next day and apologized for the nurses behavior saying that they have a problem with the night nurses being too ""overzelous"". Another nurse told me that the nursery didn't have room for the baby and said that ""Dad should help out more"". Dad was very insulted and is the most caring dad I know. That nurse was out of line. The list goes on and on. The nurses here are not very good at all. Go to a Birthing Center instead and you will probably have a calmer and more peaceful birth for your baby. Pros: Good neonatal unit. Good facilities. Good intensive care. Cons: Night nurses in neonatal are known for being uncaring and cold. more
