I had an emotional evening tonight ...not because i was sad but because i was so happy. After so much hard work i finally did a few crossovers in the OPPOSITE direction..a little bit of SUCCESSFUL drunken sailor AND turnaround toe stops...slow but fluid...(if you don't know these terms, it's ok, they'll teach you !!!)\r \r I recommend OWRD for new skaters learning to build skills, self confidence and meet a nice group of people who are willing to teach you everything you need to know <3 ! more

Nearly a year ago OWRD accepted me with open arms and open hearts. I came in with zero skills and zero confidence but that did not effect the way I was treated. Slowly but surely my skills grew and so did my confidence not only with skating but in all areas of my life. What a gift Donna gave people in our community when she created this one of kind league more

I love OneWorld Roller Derby! I am new to derby and was attending some beginner classes at another league and while I was having fun I didn’t know what I was missing. I knew about OneWorld and kept hearing their name come up so I decided to go to one of their practices and see what it was all about. I am so glad I did! I have learned so much at OneWorld and love being able to work on important skills and drills that we were not doing at the other league. I really feel that OneWorld is giving me an amazing opportunity to learn and advance and I am so grateful for that. I love it so much I find myself wishing everyday was a practice day! Thank you OneWorld it is so awesome to skate with you guys! more

Since I started attending practices with OWRD approx. 5 months ago I have met some amazing people, greatly improved my skating skills, lost 20 pounds, and found an amazing place where I can be myself and have the encouragement to be the best athlete I can be. more

It feeds my soul, makes me a better athlete, and enhances my life in and outside of derby. I've made some amazing friends. Now even my daughter, who learned how to skate at OWRD, is now skating derby too, so it's a bonding experience for the both of us. \r \r You can make your experience at OWRD whatever you want it to be, casual skill learning, to working out a few times a week. scirmmaging, getting on a team, all stars, etc. All with no volunteer commitments and a very positive environment! We are here to help you learn skills and drills and respectfully know that everyone learns at their own pace. \r \r Going through a divorce, losing 120 lbs, and not knowing where life will take me...derby is my anchor. It grounds me, challenges me, and I can't think about the outside world while I am doing it. Even though I'm working hard, I'm getting a break in a way. Love this league with all my heart! more

Roller Derby Saved My Life, without one world i dont know where I would be. This is more than a league they are my family. I never knew how to skate before coming here now I am coming up on my SECOND season with OWRD. From Day one you feel welcomed and loved, nowhere else will you be playing derby as soon as you have the basic skills. more

Bringing Roller Derby to a new level! Here at OWRD I have found that YOU can go at YOUR own pace. No pressure to succeed and excel, though it is enouraged, it is encouraged at a pace that you are comfortable with!\r I don't know of any other league that offers this kind of option. \r Derby Love! more

The great thing about OneWorld Roller Derby is it it what you want it to be. And sometimes it is what you need it to be. \r \r After going through a painful move across the country, I need to do something for my physical and mental well being, even though I did not know it. I happened to find OneWorld Roller Derby. Risa made me feel welcome, strong and confident from the start. \r \r In the past almost 6 months I have gained confidence and friends. And back to the great things, if you want a more competitive experience you can try out for the all stars. If you want to have a place to skate with some great people three times a week you don't have to join a team. If you want to scrimmage you can do that. There are no volunteer requirements. It is just what you want from it. And you will get what you need. more

After becoming a fan of roller derby the last few years, I thought ""Hey, I can do that."" But I had no derby experience and didn't even know where to begin to learn until I found OneWorld Roller Derby. This group of skaters really makes you feel welcome and are eager to teach. Even if you have never been on skates, or it's been a really long time, they help you figure it out. I feel very positive that I can become a great derby skater and it is all because of OWRD. I've been skating with OWRD for about 2 months and having the time of my life. more

I am very thankful for One World Roller Derby. I came to OWRD through a beginning roller derby class through North Seattle Community College. The Hot Flash, founder of OWRD, created such an amazing environment for learning and being positively supported. I hadn't been on skates since I was a kid and was quickly building confidence and learning new skills. I was encouraged to go to practices where I felt welcomed. Many of the experienced skaters assist the new skaters with learning the basics and new skills. I never felt intimidated becuase there was always someone there to provide guidance and encouragement. more

You want a family of loving, supporting, and empowering women come to a OWRD practice. I have been skating with OWRD for over 5 months, and I have made so many friends and and also made so many mermories. I haven't been on skates in over 15 years, and just decided to visit a Tuesday night practice. I was glad I did!! The girls are all very welcoming and will teach you the basics for you to become confident on skates. If you would like you can join a team or also you can just come to practices and get some great exercise. OWRD is changing the face of roller derby for real! If you want a fun, challenging, and empowering experience come skate with all of us at OWRD! more

I came to One World completely done with derby. I was at the end of my derby career as far as I was concerned. I was never going to be good enough to skate with a league and I had a bitter taste in my mouth after two years of trying and failing to advance beyond my basic skills. As soon as I stepped into the BSK I was home, I was encouraged instead of belittled, I was loved for my strengths instead of hated for my weakness and I FINALLY fit in the derby world! I will never be the same, my skating will never be the same! I am home! more

I decided to check out a Tuesday night practice in late Feburary of this year, since I was interested in joining a derby league. I haven't skated in 30 years, was in my mid 40's and was quite nervous about joining something that I thought was for much younger women. To my surprise and delight, I was warmly welcomed and discovered that a good number of the league was in their 40's also! I came back the next week, and have been going 2-3x a week ever since! Amazing support group for a newbee, wonderful teaching and coaching - TRUE team dynamics! I went looking for a new form of exercise and a ""hobby"" - what I now have is a new sense of pride for what I have learned and accomplished over the last few months, a feeling of being powerful, better fitting jeans, and the best part is that I am not just part of a league or team, I am part of a wonderful Derby family! I can't say enough about how amazing everyone is! more

I came to OneWorld after more than six months away from the derby scene. I was on another league previously. I had taken a break and was looking to get back into playing but wasn't sure if I would have the time to commit as that was an issue previously. I work full time and have kids, lots of kids, so trying to get to late night practices and team meetings, and committee meetings was always a challenge. \r \r When I went to my first practice I noticed quite a few things that were outstanding. New skaters were integrated in with advanced skaters. They were treated with respect and were being taught in a way that everyone can relate to. I have skated for years and have never seen this type of team atmosphere. The league as a whole trains together. Teams are broken up but only when a game is upcoming. Everyone works together and tries to make sure that everyone gets a fighting chance to excel. \r \r Everyone works together to make sure that the league stays positive and uplifting. I love it here. more

One World is changing the face of roller derby by making it TRULY accessible to everyone with the willingness to become involved. Its focus on skills and community makes it a nurturing space for competitive athletes, skaters who want to play for the friends and family, and for folks who just want to get a nice workout on skates. I love I have found One World. It has given me a derby home after looking for a long time! more

A few months ago, I saw the North Seattle ad for roller derby and thought that I might as well use my legs while they're still working. So I laced up after 28 years and thought I would just learn to take some hits! I've had so much fun, that I passed evals and am working on being faster, better and stronger. I can't thank Hot Flash and all of One World enough for giving me some of the best laughs I've had in a long time! Sometimes the best healing comes through having people around who are willing to knock you down and then pick you up again! more

I hadn't been on quad skates since I was 7 and didn't know much at all about roller derby. One World Roller Derby has been amazingly friendly and easy to get into. They were helpful right off the bat answering my e-mails and I was at my first practice just a few days later. Even with me not having a clue what I was doing they have been very supportive and I don't think I've heard a negative word from anyone. It's a blast every practice and rolling is especially satisfying after a frustrating day at work. more

Someone says to you- Ever wanted to try 7/2/2012

Someone says to you- Ever wanted to try Roller Derby? Ever feel like you are missing something? Like you don't want to look back and wish you would have tried? That was why I made my decision to join OneWorld. I wish I would have done it a very long time ago! \r \r Here is how I started...I was wearing a tshirt that said ""Roller Derby"" and someone said ""Oh, do you play?"" and I said ""No."" This random stranger then says to me ""Why not?"" That stuck with me and 3 months later, after acquiring all my gear, I was ready to find a derby home.\r \r From the minute I arrived, I felt welcome and part of something special. The greeters made me feel super welcome and safe. Everyone there was patient and helpful, offering plenty of encouragement and advice. Not only do they teach new skaters how to skate, current skaters how to thrive but also advanced skaters how to become AllStars. When was the last time you could call yourself an AllStar in a sport? Everytime I skate, I get better, mentally and physically. It feels like a second home to me.\r \r I haven't skated since junior high and I am rapidly approaching the end of my 30's. I feel like a kid again when I skate. I cannot express enough how awesome OneWorld is. Thank you for bringing something into my life that is SO WONDERFUL!\r more

I started out as a beginner skater and now I am training to be on the team. I have really enjoyed the one world roller derby community. Everyone I have interacted with has been open, motivating and very fun to skate with. We all push each other to achieve the skate goals we want to work on. I have made so many friends and feel apart of a welcoming community. I always wanted to try roller derby and I am so glad that I involved with one world roller derby. If you are even thinking you might want to join derby, you should defiantly sign up. Hope to see you at the rink sometime! more

By Far the Best 2/13/2012

This is by far the best place to go if you are a veteran derby girl or if you have seen the movie Whip It a few dozen times and you always wanted to try it. Even if you can't even stand up on a pair of skates and you dont even know where to begin to find gear this is the place for you. I have been there only a few months and I have made plenty of friends. When I first started I wasnt even able to go around the rink once without sitting down but now I can Jam with the best of them. more
