So many things to eat, so few days in the week 2/23/2006

Despite the sometimes indifferent service, long wait time when it's busy, and pretty dinky portions, I think this is my favorite weekend brunch place overall. Their options are all so different from one another, but all so tasty. Order the Monte Cristo (with syrup) first, then the Fuji apple and brie omelette the next, then the soy-marinated beef tenderloin scramble with peavines, then the morning pasta (sans added bacon because it's too salty with), et cetera, et cetera. What I'm saying is that it's all good. I can never decide. I also like their eggs benedict, but you can get that anywhere, unlike some of the other dishes. I hear their stuffed french toast and huevos rancheros are good too. They make a nice Bloody Mary with pickled green beans. The coffee is strong and very good and keeps on flowing while the kitchen works on your food. The restaurant is tiny, so they have a hard time seating big groups. Unless you come really early, be prepared to wait a good long time for a table. There's always parking out front during brunch because it's at the periphery of Capitol Hill and the Pike/Pine Corridor. more

Cheap quality drinks 12/4/2005

I haven't eaten here but I can vouch for the bar. They have some really cheap deals for well drinks and the bartenders know how to pour a good drink. The extra dirty martinis are delicious and the rum & cokes are good too. Not much on the beer menu here, so get mixed drinks instead. The atmosphere is great here too. Not overly trendy or obscure, it has a good crowd. more

Rosebud 9/12/2005

When I lived on Capitol Hill, the Rosebud was one of my favorite places for drinks. They make good martinis (with the good stuff - Chopin, etc.) and have really cheap strong drinks at night. The place is small and the couches are gross (they don't seem to ever clean them) but they put some tables in the little courtyard out back that are nice. I hear their food is okay but overpriced, but I've never eaten there. more

Rosebud 9/7/2005

I recently went here for brunch. The food was mediocre and overpriced. The huevos rancheros was small and tasteless although very pretty in presentation. The atmosphere was cute and quaint but didn't warrent the price tag. The bar side, on the other hand, is a great little place with comfy couches and 2 dollar wells from 4:30 until midnight every day of the week. more

Beautiful Brunches 8/31/2005

Rosebud is an excellent restaurant for brunch in Capitol Hill. They have a decent menu, with both sweet and savory options. The wait staff was extremely accommodating to our requests for slight changes due to dietary restrictions. The french toast is amazing, and our omelets were fluffy as can be. There's a gorgeous little terrace in the back, though you have to deal with very small tables back there. Since it is Capitol Hill there can be parking problems, though a number of buses stop nearby. We will certainly return to Rosebud. more

Better Than An Old Wooden Sled 8/29/2005

The Rosebud on E. Pike is a somewhat trendy, artsy little place just off Broadway. Inside, think red, with small tables for two and large, comfortable couches perfect to collapse into with a group on a crowded night. Local art adorns the walls, adding local unity. The bartenders and staff are friendly and easygoing, good with a tab (who isn't) and ready with your next drink as soon as you want it on slower nights. During the week, the Rosebud is fairly empty inside and a good place to hangout without much stress or noise. The best feature of the Rosebud, however, is the back porch, which is filled up even on most weeknights. There are tables to sit at and stairs up to a back lawn terrace, where you can have your drink and gaze up at the stars...or the clouds, depending on your luck. more

Memories 7/21/2005

We got engaged at Rosebud. She was about to get on a plane. I had the ring. We don't live close to the Rosebud any more, but we still think of it as our restaurant. Rosebud is a small, intimate restaurant with an inspired menu, a great place for dates or small parties. There's a full bar, but its separated from the eating area by a wall, so it doesn't impinge on the atmosphere. more

Editorial
  • In Short
The deep-red walls and Jazz-era decor make this Capitol Hill bistro a romantic date spot. Service is friendly and attentive. A pair of sleds on the wall pay homage to the "Citizen Kane" character that gives the restaurant its name. Dinner favorites include the herbed goat cheese spread and the soy- and horseradish-marinated beef tenderloin with lotus root chips. Brunch dishes, like eggs benedict, assorted omelettes and cranberry-orange pancakes, draw hungry, hungover crowds.
