Editorial review from Citysearch 3/11/2014

I have eaten at Riva's at least once for the past 10 years while attending the Housewares Show. We have brought important buyers, guests, etc. and have always found it top notch. Food, drinks were perfect. The wait staff was courteous and caring. Not one instance of poor food or service. It is still my number one choice. It is pricey, but this is downtown Chicago. Expect to pay $80-95 per person with wine, food and dessert & tip. more

We had the worst experience here! Save your money and go somewhere else. The food is mediocre and the service is horrendous. And to top it off, our waiter was very rude and condescending. more

Loved the food!! 5/16/2012

The food at Riva was outstanding. The portions were just perfect. We had the petite filet and the Australian lobster, along with some drinks. The drinks were ok, but the filet was just the right size and the lobster was huge and perfectly cooked. I have absolutely no complaints about the food. The service of course could be better, and it is quite pricey. more

Most Humiliating Dining Experience of a Lifetime 8/7/2011

Dining at this restaurant, the RIVA at Navy Pier was the most unpleasant dining experience of my life. My husband and I had made reservations for Saturday, August 6th so we could celebrate my birthday and enjoy some seafood and the Navy Pier fireworks. We had made a special request to have a window seat with a good view of the fireworks. Gentleman taking phone reservation assured us that it would be granted. We arrive at the restaurant 1 hour early to check on our reservations and again let them know that we were requesting a table at the window with a good view of the fireworks. Our request had been noted next to our name at the time we made the reservations. The young lady at the host/hostess stand made the abrupt comment that all views from the restaurant were good. How difficult would it have been for her to respond with a positive response such as ""not a problem, I see that your request has been noted next to your name, we will take care of this for you"". To cut to the chase, we were brought to our table. It was a window table, THE SMALLEST TABLE IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT squeezed in underneath a very ominous steel beam. It was a two seater no bigger than a postage stamp. I respectfully requested to the host that we be seated at a larger table so we weren't so crowded. His response completely caught me off guard and I felt extremely uncomfortable. He was very condescending saying, this table isn't good enough for you, well you'll have to wait for another than. He told us we weren't allowed to request a window table, it was first come first serve. He took us back to the lobby and told us we'd have to wait in the bar. The bar tender saw us coming back in (after having spent an hour there already) and immediately saw we were not pleased. She went to the host station and they responded to her right away. The host sat us at another table in the restaurant, yes a larger window table, with the view of the lake where the fireworks were going to be blocked by a 2' x 6' wait staff station. We were tired and took the table as the host made sure to humiliate us as he seated us saying ""I hope this table is good enough"". We ate very marginal food at best and tried to enjoy ourselves despite the incredibly rude and odd behavior of the host. We had to move our chairs into the area of the table next to us in order to view the fireworks. My husband let the host know we weren't pleased. This host became unglued and came over to our table and began yelling at us in front of the entire restaurant. EVERYONE around us was shocked by him. He began rambling on about his family and how he had to leave them at home while he worked. We had no idea what this meant. We paid our bill and my husband asked to talk to the manager while he waited for me to come out of the ladies room. The host claimed to be the manager and again began verbally assaulting my husband. Literally to the point where another waiter had to hold him back from physically assaulting my husband. I'm still in shock over the experience and want all to know how incredibly unprofessional this place was. We were verbally assaulted, nearly physically assaulted all for a mear $200 (+++) tab. WILL NEVER RETURN. more

Average and overpriced 2/2/2009

Not sure why this is rating so high. I agree that the food is good but it is so expensive. very much a tourist place! Pros: Good food and nice view Cons: over priced more

An expensive place with small portions 9/9/2007

At the outset, let me state my one visit to Riva was a few years ago, so it is not real recent. But, I'd be willing to bet the attributes I remember are still applicable today.\r \r It was an upscale, expensive place with small portions. We were treating my sister and her fiancee' and we were all feeling ""wallet anxiety"". Chilean sea bass was very good. Expect to pay alot, and if you want to leave full, really expect to pay alot. When we were leaving, I noticed a picture of Bill Clinton smiling and posing with the Riva staff (presumably he had dined here). I remember thinking, ""Yeah, you have to be a big shot to be able to afford leaving here feeling really full!""\r \r Since no one else has reviewed this place yet on this site, I thought this information might be of value. Pros: Seafood was good, and a fairly good view of Navy Pier. Cons: Small portions and expensive. more

Terrible experience, manager did not make it right, check your receipt!!! 7/23/2007

On July 21, 2007, at around 6:30pm, my wife, myself and two other couples arrived to celebrate our anniversaries together. The dinners involving fish were fine, but the steak dinners were not cooked right. I asked for medium and received well done. My brother and law asked for medium rare and received well done. He did not want to wait for a new steak, but I decided to wait. Twenty minutes later, after most were done with their meal, my replacement steak arrived. This time it was cooked very rare as the center was very, very bloody and cold! Rather than wait even longer I decided to just eat around the edges. The manager who brought out the steak made no gesture to give us anything for my trouble - which was rude but fine. However, here comes the best part. When the receipt was brought out and we looked at the automatically included ""18% gratuity"", it was almost 25%! They included the gratuity on the steak that they took back in addition to the steak they brought me! I pointed this out the the manager and he said ""Oh, problem with the system."" I had a terrible steak and was almost ripped off and the only thing the manager did to fix it was give me his business card and say ""Next time you come let me know and we will make your experience better."" Why could he have not made it better that night? The bill came to almost $400 and that is all he had to say? VERY BAD experience. Pros: If you are on the Pier its convienient Cons: Service was terrible and they dont do well with steaks more

STAY AWAY 7/15/2007

Lousy service. Lousy waiters, disdainful servers, hostesses with attitude (you expect that). Food was good, not phenominal, good. Drinks were wrong, and late. Servers and waiters were talking with attitude over their shoulders. This ruined what could have been a nice meal. they don't treat you that way in LA. Save the 70 bucks per person and grab a hotdog. You won't get the attitude which is free on the street. You'll have money left over to actually have an enjoyable evening. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR ENERGY ON THIS PLACE. Pros: fresh seafood Cons: you get so angry about service you can't enjoy the food more

Disappointing and long night 3/28/2007

Beautiful views and nice ambience. Very romantic. The service was terrible. The wait staff is pleasant enough, but dinner took about 2.5 hours. If I wasn't with such good company, I think I would've liked to have walked out. I could see several couples getting impatient throughout the dining room. Apparently I wasn't the only one getting fed up. Dinner itself was fair. My filet mignon was overdone but because the service was so darn slow, I didn't dare send my food back to the kitchen. The meal is on the pricier side, which you can expect for fine just wasn't worth it tonight. I probably won't go back, especially since there are so many fine restaurants in Chicago where money and time are better spent. You can definitely do better. Pros: Views, ambience Cons: Service, food more

Nice view near navy pier, best service. 1/15/2007

We accidently have to eat there BECAUSE PARK IN THE RESTAURANT SPACE AND THE ATTENDENT TOLD US IF WE EAT AT RIVA RESTAURANT, WE CAN GET VALIDATION AND PAY ONLY TEN DOLLARS INSTEAED OF THIRTY THREE DOLLARS. So we decided to eat because we also hurgry ,we went up stair of the restaurant , it is fine restaurant. The service is great. We orders crab cake to share for two of us, it was great. My friend order clam chowder to try, it is quiet different from California clam chowder. It was very light broth instead of thick broth in California. I order sirlion steak, the steak is good but the cheese which on the steak was too strong but I still finished my steak. My girlfriend order pork chop, the sauce on the pork chop is very salty but she like the pork chop. The price is fair compare to service , view and parking lot. more

LOVED RIVA!! 1/5/2006

I visited Chicago for New Year's Eve and fell in love with this restaurant. It's right in front of the lake with amazing views. The service is great and the food is delicious. Ambiance is great for both romance and family-I had an amazing experience. GO RIVA! Pros: Great Service, Great Food Cons: Bad Parking, End of Pier more

great evening 5/7/2005

Fom the ambience to the meal everything was perfect. Exceptional service. Great location. Pros: food, service, parking more

Service was terrible 2/23/2005

I visited Chicago (from Seattle) to visit my niece and tried planning a very special evening for our last night together. When I booked my reservations 2 weeks ago, I mentioned our hope to see Chicago's Light Nights from our table, the receptionist was icy and dismissive of my special request, and it wasn't til we got there that I found out the stupid fireworks display wasn't even visible from our window, so that was another huge disappointment. Our server looked haggard and I hated the way she plunked down everything onto the table with a loud ""thud"" - I felt unwelcomed and uncomfortable, but most of all, I hated the smirk she gave when we weren't interested in ordering more food or wine, even though we spent $150 already. Chicago overall is cool, but the staff at Riva needs some lessons on customer service. Pros: Great View., Great People Watching, Decent Food Cons: Unhappy waitstaff, Pricey, Rude phone manners more

Sensational restaurant 11/6/2002

The ahi tuna and sashimi salmon were fabulous. With all the other dishes I tried (Tuna tartar, petit ragout of scallops and shrimp, oysters, cod, salmon trio (poached, smoked and raw)) I managed to not actually cry out ""OOH!"" but it was not easy. I ate there two nights on a recent trip. The first time was the night after having eaten at the Signature Room (awesome view, good food but not in the league of Riva, have drinks at the bar and then head to Navy Pier to eat). The second night I ate there Bill Clinton dropped in for dinner there. Excellent quality, attentive service and generous portions. I never thought I would look forward go back and to eat tuna in... Chicago! Superior quality of fish and preparation. Excellent overall experience. more

Great food. Great view. 9/24/2002

Riva is Chicago's best seafood restaurant. Their chef is awesome. Don't miss the daily specials; they are creative and really tasty. And the view! What a spectacular place to experience Chicago. You can't go wrong. The appetizers, entrees and desserts are all well done. And the service is great too. The server said that they get a lot of out-of-town guests because of the view and location but Chicagoans shouldn't pass up the opportunity to dine here on a regular basis; the food is fab. Pros: Great food, Great Service, Great ambiance Cons: Navy Pier more
