This is a hide-away with extraordinary food well prepared in classic french style and an extensive list of affordable wines. We live in the neighborhood and love this restaurant....

Why did I find atmosphere depressing 8/27/2006

We went to Red Rooster yesterday, and I can honestly say it's a hole-in-the-wall...It was supposed to be inexpensive, but their menu was different from their menu online and MUCH costlier. I got cabernet salmon, which was ok. My company had steak. "Medium", in French, apparently, means "rare", so it was REALLY nothing to write home about. The highlighes of the visit were the baked brie appetizer (baked in a pastry, served with sauce), and the toasted bread they give everyone. I didn't feel it was that good a value, and the dark cluttered room left me depressed! more

I really, really like the Red Rooster 5/8/2006

My wife and I discovered this place while walking down Halsted one Friday evening. We were with friends and decided to pop-in for some food and a glass or two of wine. What we got was an excellent dining experience unlike many others we had in Chicago when we lived there (moved to Seattle last summer). The bar and restaurant are divided into two parts. The "back" room is where we sat. It's small, quiet, and very, very intimate. Dim lights, ecclectic decor, and friendly, attentive service. The food was terrific (country french) and the wine was superb. Not too pricey either. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for something a little different, give the Red Rooster a try. more
