DON""T GO TO MEDUSA! I found out the hard way. This place is a dream for me--organic hair dye, a staff who really and truly know what they are doing, obviously from decades of experience, and they LISTEN to the client. Oh, and REAL old school people from the neighborhood cutting hair. making it happen. They made sure I was going to be happy BEFORE they started the color and cut. I paid over twice as much at Medusa for the same processes, where I was completely unhappy with what they did. If you want a fancy salon this might not be the place you want, but if you want very reasonable prices and kindness, this is it. Rose is the multi-talented owner of Rapunzel Rapunzel and she knows her craft! It would be impossible to leave her beautiful salon (made up like a pretty/handsome medieval room) feeling disappointed. I have been going to Rose for many years. The haircut and the color are a no-brainer. I know that when she is finished I am going to a trillion times better than I did before. Half of the fun though is being in her salon and talking with her and with all of the customers. Rose has the ability to discuss any topic intelligently, often with good humor and a dry wit. She has this incredible ability to remain 100% focused on the hair while running the salon, and keeping all the customers happy. It's sounds bustling, and it is, but somehow it is relaxing to be there. It's the magic of Rose! No matter who you are or what kind of hair you have, Rose will make you feel comfortable and send you out of her salon looking better than ever. more

Not only is Rose experienced, but she has a wealth of knowledge you won't find anywhere else. Want your hair colored without harsh chemicals? Ask her for her organic, natural veggie-based dyes. My mother had Cancer, and Rose went above and beyond to find the best treatments, vitamins, etc. I asked her to do my hair and makeup for my wedding, we did a dry-run and it looked amazing. \r \r Yeah, you can be a snob and complain about the decor, but nobody's gonna be talking about decor when you walk in with either big, nasty, long island streaks, or a chic new (Park Slope) 'do. Pros: Knowledge, skills, funny staff, relaxed atmosphere Cons: Better to make an appointment, walk-ins are risky... but when you're in demand, what can you expect? more

The reviewer who said this place was filthy and who hated the gossip was someone who should have been spending twice as much to be at a more image-conscious hipster salon elsewhere in Park Slope. I love a chic salon too, who doesn't, but here's my problem with those places - the stylists are mostly under 30 and don't have a clue. I prefer highlights that are very fine, giving the overall look of a natural pale blonde. In other words, more Park Ave blonde than Jersey stripes. But I've literally never, after living in 3 different large cities now, found a young hip stylist who could do highlight and foil placement that way. They always do it chunky because it's easier and they lack the skill. And on top of it they take way too long. Like as in hours. Instead, I will happily take Rose with her lifetime of experience, getting the job done right and getting it done fast for a little over a hundred bucks. My colorist in Beverly Hills was like this too - an older woman with a ton of experience who gossiped. BEST hair ever with her too. As for all that, the gossip and the clutter (it's clutter not filth, it's a clean place) come on, it's true Brooklyn! It's like something out of a movie. Enjoy one of the old-school Brookyn experiences before it all dies out. It's total entertainment and a lot of fun for you if you just relax and roll with it. I got my hair and makeup done by Rose, the owner, for my wedding, and absolutely loved the romantic yet natural look (for a very inexpensive price), so I decided to give her a shot at a cut, since Rapunzel is much closer to my place and a lot cheaper than the Williamsburg salon I was going to. I'm so glad I did. Rose did an amazing job on my curls--they haven't been this bouncy and beautiful in years--and my former hairdresser was a curl specialist! I'm not the only one who thinks she did a great job--I've gotten compliments galore since I got the cut, and that was months ago.\r \r I also asked for highlights when I was there last, but Rose told me that curly hair often looks stripey with highlights, so she recommended baliage (French painted-on color) and said she had just the right shade. I took her advice, and I absolutely adore the effect: It looks like my hair at sunset in summer, just the effect I was looking for but one I thought would be impossible to achieve. Rapunzel Rapunzel was recommended to me by a good friend (at least I thought she was a good friend) and when I couldn't get into my regular place, I made an appointment here. \r It wasn't that the experience was bad, per se, but it's now eight weeks later and I'm dying for a new cut and have been for about four weeks. Usually I don't even think about my next haircut until week 9 or 10. Bottom line on skill = not so great.\r But more to the point, the place was filthy--I mean, I almost left but then I figured I'd be washing my hair again anyway...\r There was hair everywhere--no sweeping up at all in the 2+ hrs I was there. Dirty towels--some of which were used on me--ick!!!! And no evidence of that barbershop disinfectant anywhere so no clean combs, brushes ,etc. And the hairdryer was on the floor, in all that hair from other people--you get the ugly picture.\r Finally, the owner Rose was a big gossip in a kind of dangerous, not so professional way, dishing the dirt on other stylists and salons in the vicinity and bad-mouthing them. I've been coming to Rose at Rapunzel Rapunzel for several years. Though I don't see her that often, as I have long hair and mainly come in for trims, she always remembers my preferred cut (she calls it ""The Victoria's Secret""!) and takes time to make sure I'm satisfied. The atmosphere of the salon is cozy and fun - there is always an enjoyable conversation going! \r \r Rose always gives great tips and sells wonderful L'Anza products. As she has long hair herself, she offers great ideas for protecting long hair.\r \r Rose and her colleagues do great short styled cuts and color too! I've witnessed many a happy patron during my visits.\r \r I appreciate a stylist who respects what you want and who really knows her stuff - that's Rose! Even though I knew *nothing* about Rapunzel Rapunzel, I called them in a pinch for highlighting. It was the only place i could get an appointment for that evening. Despite the slight sense of chaos in the place, I couldn't be happier with the results!! The owner did my hair (chatting loudly the whole time) and blended my roots perfectly and stayed late to finish. The great thing was the bill came to $110 including tip for almost a full head of highlights. I would definitely go back! more
