Pluses and Minuses 5/17/2006

Pros: Small enough to find what you want, if they have it at all. Nice little truffles in a case at the checkout stand, which I regularly indulge in. Conveniently located in the midst of 15th Ave E shopping cluster. Cons: Vague staff. Not incompetent or impolite, just vague. As if you're sort of interfering with whatever it is they're really thinking about, and they're sparing you about 2 percent of their attention. Limited selection, with notable holes in what they stock. Produce is crazy expensive, but maybe that's just the organic food thing. Yesterday they had a sandwich board outside the front door advertising tomatoes at $5.99 per lb... and that's what they were using to attract customers! more

It's About Their Soups and Juices 5/10/2006

Their juice bar, with organic juices and soups, may be the best on Capitol Hill, and is usually my main reason for coming here when I do. It's a good place to get a quick, healthy lunch. But it's definitely not a place to go for those who wish for their meals to please their eyes as much as their palates, unless you like the look of produce. Other than that, it's like a smaller version of the Madison Market that is just under a mile away. more

best small independent natural grocery 10/21/2005

when i first began attempting to learn how to cook healthy, organic, vegetarian meals, this is the first natural grocery store i was introduced to. they are a small store on capitol hill, with a wide variety of products, and many decent prices and frequent sales. the staff are very friendly and helpful, and there is a wonderful smoothie bar right in the center of the store. more

A full spectrum 8/21/2005

I am, admittedly, not the kind of person who would normally shop at the Rainbow Market. My girlfriend dragged me with her last time she visited and I have to say I was impressed. They weren’t that much more expensive than other grocery stores, despite being mostly organic. They actually had honeycrisp apples (organic) for CHEAPER than Safeway. And they tasted much, much better. more

An organic Convenience Store, only not so much 8/20/2005

A nice little store, too little for your regular shopping, nothing special enough to make it a destination stop, except maybe the decent wine selection. Suffers from a location too small to make a serviceable grocery. It's a great place to stop for a quick drink and a snack, or even for a picnic at Volunteer park. It is very committed to organic, and the produce is usually priced great. But run in for a bottle of molasses and they will be out of stock, or they just don't carry that item. Or you get half of your shopping list and have to go to the other natural grocery on the hill for the rest. It's a store that you wish was so much more than it is. more

Organic Co-op good prices 8/15/2005

Rainbow Natural Grocery serves the 15th st neighborhood in Capital Hill but I have spoken to quite a few people that travel to come to this store. It has a good selection of fresh organic vegetables locally grown. I go there to buy my sesame oil and honey. It has a small cooler section with tofu and juices that I like. There is also a good selection of natural grain flours. Prices are average compared to Madison Market and other local food co ops. more

Excellent natural food store 7/26/2005

I shopped at Rainbow Grocery several times while trying to improve my eating habits. While a small store, they still have an excellent selection of organic fruits and vegetables, bulk foods, and a pretty impressive choice of other natural foods...including frozen foods, pasta, soups, and snacks. Prices were quite reasonable, considering that you are buying organic and natural foods. They also have a smoothie shop right in the middle. Feel free to order shots of wheatgrass as well! (Although I'd recommend just adding wheatgrass to your smoothie!) more

good natural foods 5/31/2005

Mostly I come here for the bread flour (white and whole wheat) which I can get here cheaper than at PCC. They also sell tofu in bulk – I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I plan to try it soon. I also want to try the fresh juice that they sell here, since it looks good. more

Somewhere Over The Rainbow 4/30/2005

You know how the smell of fresh carrot juice mingles with dusty whole grains in the back of your throat when you go into a non-corporate natural foods store? You know how the brown wax paper feels in your hand as you use it to pull sweet jam-filled oatmeal bars from their place in the little display case? You know how most people just go to Whole Foods these days? Well, then you should also know this: Rainbow Natural Grocery is an honest-to-goodness organic treat. The prices are no higher than WF and it does your soul good (not just your body) to eat healthy food AND support a local store. more
