Good Price/Decent Food/Rude Waiter 2/17/2011

My husband, kids and I used to like this place until about 6 months ago. The price was fair and the food was good. Unfortunately we will never go back because we were treated so rudely by the waiter. Believe me, I am not a complainer and I get very embarrassed if people make a scene in a restaurant. We went there on a week night about 7:30 or so. When we walked in it seemed a little busy and the waiter said it would be just a minute. We stood there for about 10 minutes and then my husband said let's just go because it is getting late with the kids. When we walked out we saw one of the waitresses (off duty) sitting outside and she looked surprised that we were leaving. We told her we were in a little bit of a hurry because of the late hour and we'd just come back another time. We were not upset at all. She coaxed us back in and told the waiter who started setting up a table. He said it wouldn't take too long if we wanted to stay. We didn't want to cause a scene so we said we'll just come back another time. He insisted that we stay and even said it would be fast, but not ""McDonald's fast."" After we sat, the waitress took our wine order and gave us menus. Within a minute or two of sitting, the waiter asked (with a hint of annoyance in his voice) what we wanted to order. I told him I needed more time to read the menu and he said (as rude as can be), ""Well, I thought you said you were in a hurry!"" My husband and I looked at each other and couldn't believe it. We didn't say anything, but we should have walked out then. We finished our meal and will never be back. I can't believe that guy still works there in this economy. It wasn't like we were rude about anything. We'd been there many times before and were just saying that if it was a long wait, we'd just come back another night. I guess if you don't get on this waiter's bad side for anything then it would be an okay place to go. Too bad they lost pretty regular customers who ordered wine, etc. more

Disappointing to say the least! 1/16/2011

We had dinner at Porcelli's over the weekend and we were very disappointed. The service was very slow and the food was very disappointing. Having actually cooked in a upscale Italian restaurant for a long time I did not enjoy Porcelli's attempt at Italian. We had linguine with clams, wild boar ragu, pasta primavera, bruchetta and an over dressed caesar salad. First of all, I shouldn't have ordered a dish in the winter using tomatoes. Seasonality! I should have known better... The entire menu was pretty heavy with ""fresh"" tomatoes. You really should leave them off the menu until they are back in season. Also, if you are going to serve bread in an Italian restaurant, make sure it is authentic, nice crunchy crust with a chewy inside. Get a different bread supplier. The caesar would have been alright if it wasn't over dressed. The linguine with clams came to the table literally swimming in a broth, in the 30 years I have been in the restaurant business, I have never seen this! The clams were ok, but all the liquid really made the dish a mess. The wild boar ragu, which the server raved about, tasted like BBQ sauce and it drowned out the taste of the boar. The pasta primavera was unexciting and when it came to the table and you order a pasta dish, you expect pasta... There were maybe 15-20 pieces of pasta! For the price of the food, we expected much better. We live close and thought we would give it a try and we are sorry to say we will not be back. I have also never seen this before, at the end of our meal, we were presented with a credit card machine to pay. They left it at our table and we had to print out the receipt! It was not a very welcoming place, the owner seemed put out having to talk to guests waiting for tables. He was lucky, in this ecomomy, to have customers! Smile a little and act like you enjoy what you are doing. I kind of agree with the others who thought it was bad, the owner and staff may be writing the rave reviews. This is sad, because it makes you not trust the reviews for other places. more

GREAT FOOD, GOOD PEOPLE, FUN TIMES!!!!!!!! 8/22/2010

I'm kinda bias because my long time good friend works at Porcelli's, but honestly, I love it there. The Great affordable meals, the yummy breakfasts on the weekend, and the specials Vitto the chief keeps coming up with. Wow. I can't stay away long before I find myself right back at Porcelli's Restaurant. Johnie makes the best Latte's in Portland, and Drinks i hear too. I don't drink, so wouldn't know. hehehe. If your looking for a great spot with a good atmosphere, and good people that care about what you eat and experience, then go here. You'll leave very Happy. more

Best Restaurant in Portland! 7/9/2010

Porcelli's is absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm Italian, and it's one of the best Italian places I've ever been to. To add to that, it's amazingly priced, there's easy parking, and they have wonderful staff. If I could afford to go there every day, I seriously would. There is NEVER a wait. Their dinners are great. Happy hour is from 3 to 6 every day, and they have great deals. Unlike most places in Portland, the happy hour specials are between $3 and $5 and are the same size as normal appetizers. During happy hour, well drinks are $2.50 and beers are $3. It is a great deal! You literally can have multiple drinks, enough appetizers to fill you up, and dessert for two people for less than $30. Their menu changes seasonally. I would highly recommend the beef tips in penne (such delicious sauce!) and the lobster ravioli. They have fantastic breakfast as well--I love the Italian Eggs Benedict: English muffins with pesto, fresh tomato slices, eggs, amazing hollandaise sauce, and basil. SO DELICIOUS. Live music on the weekends, staff who knows your favorites and your drink of choice... Literally this place is amazing! I HIGHLY recommend you check it out as soon as possible. Pros: Amazing food, good prices, easy parking... no downside! Cons: Absolutely none! more

Inconsistent, but still good when not fantastic 9/27/2009

My husband and I tried the Chicken Marsala on our first visit and thought it was the best we'd had in twenty years. The next time it was only average. The first time we had the Fettucine Alfredo it was fair, the second time it was fabulous. The pasta carbonara was really good the first time and AMAZING!!! the second time. The wait staff is also inconsistent, sometimes GREAT and sometimes just fair. All in all, they're always satisfactory and often sensational. It's worth eating there on the chance that it will be one of the sensational days!!~ Pros: Gluten-Free Pasta Cons: two different chefs means the food is inconsistent more

Simply Bad 7/11/2009

This place is a joke and I wouldn't be surprised if the owner writes the good reviews to get business. The food does not taste at all authenic. It actually has no taste at all. Save your money and go somewhere else. Cons: Bad food more

Unique find 7/8/2009

Porcelli's puts together some awesome sandwiches..BLTs, Tuna Salad, and a Club that is one of my favorites just to name a few. I've only dined here for lunch and breakfast therefore cannot comment on the dinner menu although I would be very surprised if I were disappointed. My office is a short distance away so very convenient for a quick lunch get away. I've always found the Porcelli's team cordial and prompt and the quality of food has yet to disappoint me. Prices are very reasonable too. I'm looking forward to dropping in for dinner sometime! Pros: Club sandwich; great staff; quaint atmosphere Cons: I have none! more

Go to WinCo instead 6/13/2009

Unmemorable, bland, and processed, the food at Porcelli's gives grocery store Italian food a bad name. You'd be better off buying a jar of Newman's own and some vacuum sealed gnocchi from WinCo for 6 dollars than getting milked for $60 plus dollars for what is the WORST Italian restaurant in Portland. Pros: convenient John's Landing location Cons: food, service, presentation more

My new favorite Italian restaurant!!! 5/22/2009

I have very high standards when it comes to Italian food, and Porcelli's met every one of them! My husband and I tried it simply because it was close, and have returned because we love it! It is my new favorite place to eat! Each time we went, there were very few people in the restaurant, there was no wait, we got to choose our own table, the chef came to discuss meal choices with us, and more. The happy hour prices are great for both food and drinks, which is not true of many places in Portland. The drinks are strong and delicious, and the house-made Limoncello is great! The bruschetta, which is very affordable, especially at happy hour, is absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the lobster ravioli! I also had another delicious dish that I can't remember the name of, something along the lines of chicken sauteed with pancetta. Delicious! The staff is always so helpful and attentive, they are very friendly and stop by to see if there's anything you need frequently. The restaurant is quiet and the tables are well-spaced out so that you are not disturbed by other diners if you want a private chat. The only downside to the place is that it's a little expensive for my price range, but then, most places are these days! I absolutely love Porcelli's and would go there on a weekly basis if I could afford it! I strongly urge you to give it a try! Pros: Amazing food, attentive staff, delicious drinks, & more! Cons: I can't afford to go every day! more

Simple Italian Food 5/22/2009

This place is tucked away in the Johns Landing neighborhood, and from the outside it looks like the convenience store it used to be. On the inside it is quite nice looking. The food was simple italian fare, with rice pasta available for those desiring gluten free options. The wines were mediocre; the service was very slow. It's a cute neighborhood place, but not a place to bring people you want to impress. Pros: Have a gluten free pasta option Cons: Very slow service, mediocre wines more

Nice Neighborhood Place 4/9/2009

Took friends for first visit, we were all impressed. Not crowded at all on a Sat evening, Pros: Quiet, good food more

Amazingly good DAILY happy hour menu!! 1/8/2009

This place RAWKS~ I tried this place coz I wanted to check out their happy hour menu last week, and tomorrow night I'm going there for DINNER! They have like one of the best happy hour offerings in town (a lot of restaurants/bars in portland serve pretty much the same stuff in their happy hour)! Pros: Food, House lemoncello, DAILY happy hour Cons: ...uh....? can't think of any more

Open, even on a snow day! 12/22/2008

Porcelli's was open today. The chef was a one-man show, but still delivered food to patrons' tables. The calzones are EXCELLENT! Thanks for being open today. We really appreciate it! more

this place is great 12/11/2008

this may not be the most hip and popular place in town but that is ok with me. the food is an exceptional value and the service is great. we have eaten here a number of times (breakfasts and dinners) and really love it. we even had our wedding rehearsal dinner here and after i gave them my ""final"" headcount they were so understanding when we had more people come than anticipated. they made all of our guests feel welcome and made sure that they were all well fed. Pros: food food food Cons: not a place to ""be seen"" more

Can't get enough 12/8/2008

We live in the neighborhood and really can't get enough of Porcelli's. As someone who spends a lot of time looking for good happy hours in Portland- their happy hour truly is the best in town. The servers are genuinely nice and always welcoming. Great deals on drinks and the food has yet to let me down. Happy hour drinks are only $2.50 and they give VERY generous pours! more

Great happy hour! 11/26/2008

Porcelli's is a wonderful happy hour spot in the john's landing area. Although it's not heavily advertised, the happy hour is all evening on Tuesdays, and their happy hour includes drink deals as well as great food for phenomenal prices. The food was fresh, the wine was delicious (and a good buy), and our waitress was a dream. For my dinner, I had one of the mini pizzas (from the happy hour menu). At $2.50, it was really tasty--the sauce was flavorful with lots of herbs, and the crust was cooked perfectly. There was even enough to take home and eat for breakfast after all the appetizers that we had! Pros: John's Landing, easy parking, friendly service more

I would go here again 11/18/2008

My boyfriend and I have found there to be a lack of good italian restaurants and we were glad to have tried this place for the first time this weekend. Granted, the service was slow, but the food was reasonably priced and good. We arrived for lunch around 2pm to discover they were serving breakfast and lunch. We decided to split a caesar salad, italian benedicts, and ravioli served caprese style. The caesar was simple, but good, and the lettuce and topping were fresh. The italian benedict was made of pesto, egg, and tomato, and was a little cold (I think the pesto and tomato caused this), but it was nevertheless delicious. I find most places make their hollandaise sauce too salty, but this place did theirs very well. The ravioli was amazing. We received our bill with a 20% breakfast coupon, which we will definitely be using. Pros: food, prices, location Cons: ambience could be improved, as well as the service more

Gave this place 3 chances and still not sold 10/28/2008

Yes the food is fresh but just not that good. Don't know how to put it any other way. It does not live up to the rave reviews. Tried it for the third time just because I live in the neighborhood but won't be going back. I'll drive the extra mile to get good italian food. I agree that the owner has to be writing these reviews because they are all so similiar. Not that hard to figure out. Lame, very lame. more

Phenomenal ITALIAN IN PORTLAND! 10/27/2008

My girlfriend and I were first time customers here and were blown away. I can't believe any of the bad reviews! Those ppl are ridiculous. The food was extremely authentic and fresh. We started off with the best bruschetta ever with the freshest basil, tomatoes and olive oil. I am both Greek and Italian and know well prepared, authentic italian food. I ordered Pesto/cheese ravioli which was absolutely delisious. The waiter was also helpful with providing very authentic cocktails involving Campari and other authentic boozes. The canoli for desert was absolutely fantastic. The waiter, Johnny, was incredibly helpful and friendly. Prices were great since so many Italian restaurants charge so much for such horribly un-authentic food. Very enjoyable service. Worth every cent. We'll be back for sure and bringing more of our family! Pros: Food, Service, Ambience, Low Crowds, Parking Cons: We should've gone here sooner!! more
