Can't Believe The Bad Reviews... Opal's is Awesome! 9/17/2010

I love Opal's. The waitstaff has always been very accommodating. The food is definitely good, although not the best I've had, but their mac n' cheese always has me craving more! I really like their giant selection of beer. Anybody who truly appreciates beer needs to stop by and order a few. The atmosphere is always lovely, and because the patio is dog-friendly, I bring my pooch with me every time. Wait times can be long/ parking limited during peak hours, so just beware of that. more

Ignorant treatment of the handicapped 3/17/2009

After parking in the handicapped space in front of the restaurant(with legal handicap tags and handicapped person on boar the van) we were ordered to leave the space because it and the other handicap space was reserved for a music venue that night. Chris Shea, the manager explained that all he had to do was let us off load and he had met his obligation. So now its a Handicap drop-off zone, not handicap parking-- unless you are a band! If you are handicapped in Austin, don't patronize these swine! Pros: View Cons: Manager ignorant of Access for disabled codes more

Food: Fine, Beer: Good, Smoking Ban: Violated 1/25/2009

I recently went to Opal's with some friends. We were seated on the upstairs ""patio"". Because it was so cold, they had all of the plastic walls down, so the patio was totally enclosed. Despite the enclosed space and the ""no smoking"" sign, they still allowed smoking out there, and within 15 feet of the upstairs entrance. When I complained to the bartender, he said ""I don't own the place, sweetie, I just work here"". Nice. When I complained to a waitress, she rudely asked me, ""Were you sitting up there?"" and told me that they enclose the space to make it more comfortable for the customer. Well, I'm a customer, but you know what isn't comfortable? Inhaling a bunch of carcinogens when I'm trying to eat. Pros: Good beer. Cons: Violation of the smoking ban. more

Don't just support local Austin businesses, support GOOD Austin businesses! Opal's is not one of them! 1/2/2009

This wasn't my first visit to Opal's, but it'll surely be my last. I'm a native Austinite and am all for supporting local businesses. My husband and I were looking for a place to eat brunch on New Year's Day. I looked online and saw several advertisements for Opal's New Year's brunch and bloody mary's. We headed over and as usual stood in line behind a few people while at least 5 waiters passed us by without a glance. Finally, one of them who'd passed by a few times stopped and seated us. He then brought me lukewarm coffee and rushed off. It was 10 minutes before I could get his attention to ask for a fresh cup of coffee, and before I could get the question out he explained that they were brewing more right then. Which means that he knew it was old, and still served it to me. We ordered and waited for our meal. And waited. Our server came by a couple of times to say that the kitchen was backed up and the food would be out soon. We weren't in a hurry so it was no problem. 30 minutes later I started to get a little peeved. No one at the three tables around us (we were the last to be seated of those tables) had their food. I wondered how long the others had been waiting. Another table complained, and about 10 minutes later the manager brought their food out, although it apparently was cold, the eggs weren't done, and a meat portion was missing. Next thing we hear is our waiter telling the table next to ours that they'd run out of bloody mary mix. So the two things that Opal's had specifically advertised- New Year's Day Brunch and Bloody Mary's, were the two things they couldn't deliver. By the time we finally decided to leave, we'd waited over an hour for our food. I feel silly that I waited that long, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I've had bad service at Opal's before but I enjoy the location, atmosphere and I like being able to bring my dog along. My husband and I definitely won't be wasting our money at this horrible local business. Pros: You can take your dog. Cons: Service, service, service. more

Worst Service & Bartender 6/5/2008

A group of us went to Opal Divine on West 6th. I must honestly say I have never met a more hostile and rude bartender. Anna, the bartender/manager perhaps forgotten what customer service means. She was condescending and inappropriate. Never have I encountered more terrible service. If you want to have a good time and a few drinks with your pals, I would advise against going there, least not until such attitude from the staff is discouraged and corrected. more

Migas Review by The Melbourne Method 2/24/2008

The Opal Divine?s Migas come with a fairly standard assortment of sides: two tortillas, potatoes, and beans. The Migas arrived with decent speed and as I looked at the plate I remembered my father saying that he enjoyed the Migas, and thus I prepared to eat. I immediately noticed that my plate arrived sans salsa, and while this could have simply been an oversight it was nevertheless significant. The little lump of Migas appeared edible enough, with a light layer of shredded cheddar on top, there was clear visual evidence of tortilla chips, and red spots signified the presence of tomatoes. It is worth noting (before I go any further) that the Opal Divine?s menu boasts three items containing Migas: Migas, Migas Quesadillas, and Migas Tacos (which Liz ordered). It stands to reason, therefore, that the Migas must be pretty good, right? Wrong, so very wrong. The Migas were tasteless, slippery, rubbery, and though there was clear visual evidence that there was cheese, chips, and veggies I can?t say that I tasted compelling reason to believe that they were anything more than a visual trick. These Migas were an affront to Migas the city over, they weren?t just sub-par, they were really bad. more

Terrible 5/28/2007

Just awful. The worst bar in Austin. Can't believe how bad the service was. The staff will decide to ignore there tables and then look offended when you try to make an order! It takes hours just to get the bill! Avoid... Pros: None I could find Cons: Bad Service more

must have been a good night 5/19/2007

I personally had a great time drinking beer on the patio. Really nice huge trees and the view of the skyline was nice. There was a band playing and the ambience was great. Seemed everyone including me was having a great time. I had the philly cheese steak which i personally thought was really good. I usually dont like fries but had a couple because they came with my sandwich and before i knew it they were all gone. Im pretty picky about my fries. They werent greasy tasting. The service was pretty typical for a crowded austin pub. No better or no worse than what i have experience over the years at other restaurants or bars. I brought my laptop and enjoyed surfing the mighty net using opals free wi-fi. I will return again. more

The Food is Really Bad 2/1/2007

Even for a bar this place serves the worst sandwiches on Sixth St. If your not going for the food, ok. But if you are prepare for something less than you school cafeteria. For some sitting on Sxth St. is all the reave but the polution and nosie are laughable at best. Pros: Sycophant loves this place Cons: Sycophant loves this place more

worst bar in town! 1/14/2006

This ""bar"" is horrible. The drinks are weak and over priced. The bar was pretty empty (10 people on a Saturday night??) and the people who DO go certainly arn't the type you would want to talk to. They, however, were a step up from the severly lacking staff. The service at the Congress location is HORRIBLE! I've never seen slower bartenders in my life. It's like they don't WANT your tips or patronage. Avoid this place at all costs...your better off going to Taco Cabana and drinking crappy wine margaritas. The food is gross. I swear the steak fingers are frozen. Pros: smoking section Cons: rude staff, weak/overpriced drink, bad music more

Great Patio 3/11/2005

So nice to just sit on the patio and watch the cars go by and drink a nice pint of Guinness. Gets crowded late at night, but you can usuallly find a table with no problem. Pleasant place to chill. more

User review by chrisco 2/12/2005

What a great place to hang out. A knowledgable staff and amazing fries. If you thought you knew what scotch whiskey's tasted like, think again. They have a ridiculously huge selection. Great dart room. more

Above-average pub 5/30/2003

The drink selection is great, and the food's a step above normal pub grub: yummy chicken fingers, nice sauce for their pizza subs, and quite possibly the most addictive fries in Austin. The only problem is, a place this good (and this primo location) attracts quite a crowd, especially on Fridays. Pros: Beer selection, food Cons: Parking, crowds more

yetta 4/3/2003

Opal's is a great place to go and just ""hang out""! You never feel rushed. The deck is human/dog/kid friendly. The cracked pepper fries are the BEST french fries in Austin! If you are looking for a pub place where you feel welcome, this is it! Pros: Good Value, Good Parking more

Comfy, cozy and right on time 2/8/2003

Hit this place my first night in town, almost straight from the airport, and was quite happy with the laid back atmosphere and variety of food and drink available. Might need an extra staff member or two on the weekends - they seemed a bit stretched. Still, they were attentive and quick when you got their attention, and happy to accomodate. more

More irish than Egan's! 1/30/2003

This place has an atmosphere, good food and cool drinks...so much better a pub than that stage-set Egan's across the road. The staff are much cooler and far less annoying too. Pros: not tackily 'oirish', good food Cons: parking can be tricky more

friendly atmosphere 11/22/2002

with friendly staff, it's hard to complain about a laid-back bar with an upscale selection of scotch. service is quick, and the clientele is mixed. Pros: friendly staff, good scotch selection, relaxed atmosphere Cons: kinda out of the way more

pub pleasure 10/4/2002

Opal Divines is one of the best laid back bars in this area. The patio is one of the best. Ever since the Waterloo Brewery closed it's doors, Opal's has been the next best choice. Too bad they don't have a roof top bar! Pros: good value, good food more

Warm Beer!!! 9/6/2002

Opals would be great if they'd learn how to properly chill there beer!! Pros: Convenient, Great Patio, Easy Parking Cons: Warm Beer, Hostess Seats You, Service more
