Great Steaks, amazing burgers. Price is fair considering the quality and location. Have to stop by every time I'm in the area. more

Ignored 7/5/2011

Me and my boyfriend had dinner reservations at the Old homestead a couple of weeks ago. We had 9pm dinner reservations and got there at 9:15pm. The host asked us to sit at the bar while they get our table ready. At 9:45 and not yet seated, I finally convinced my boyfriend to say something to the host. She had said she had called our name out ""3 times"" and no one answered, meanwhile WE WERE THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE AT THE BAR! When we finally got seated, the host handed us the menu. 20 minutes later, no one bother to even give us water or check up on us. We ended up walking out and going to ABE AND ARTHURS ACROSS THE STREET. SEEING HOW BUSY ABE AND ARTHURS WAS......I GUESS WE BOTH SAW WHERE ALL THEIR BUSINESS WENT...... more

Check the receipt 1/18/2011

Food is always great as I believe this is NYC's oldest steakhouse or thereabout. This was my 6th time and for the 3rd in a row we had extra drinks / bottles of wine added to the check as well as appetizers. Beware... more

Not as great as it once was 10/23/2010

But still very good. With all the new steak houses in NY, I don't know if I'd put the Old Homestead on my ""must go to list"" but I wouldn't count it out either.. The Old Homestead' has the best Kobe beef burgers that I have ever tasted. The steak literally melts in your mouth. It is so flavorful, juicy and tender. It actually melts in your mouth. I love it. Enjoy. more

Can't beat the awesome $19 Kobe burger lunch! 10/10/2010

I saw at The Old Homestead Steakhouse's website that my favorite beef - Kobe (made with hand-massaged and gourmet-fed beef) is being offered in a new lunch special, and on my next trip to the City, I hopped right on over! Just as I remembered, the burger was bursting with flavor, the tator tots perfectly seasoned, the Caesar salad very fresh (I especially love the dressing! wish they would bottle it!), and the Cabernet exactly right. I can't believe it was all for only $19! It's nice to know that I don't have to consider the Kobe burger just a treat anymore - I can definitely afford it much more often. I highly recommend it. more

Food drastically overrated 9/11/2010

First time I have been motivated enough to review a restaurant - I really don't get these reviews. I live in the neighborhood and my wife and I stopped by here for the first time tonight, expecting greatness, based on reviews, both from the internet and our friends. Steak - completely - unimpressive. I ordered the 18 oz sirloin, medium-rare. It came medium, which is an error, but not fatal. The main problem was the meat - it was shrink-wrap/supermarket quality, and I swear it had not been aged, at all. Simply not a good cut of meat. You can get a MUCH better steak, across the street at Chelsea Market. There is no excuse for a steak at this price (which although not exorbitant, is up there) not being noticeably better than what you can get at your local butcher. The seasoning was average, not spectacular, certainly not enough to overcome the cooking error and the toughness of the meat. The macaroni and cheese side was good, but if truffles played any part in this ""truffle mac 'n cheese,"" I couldn't find it. I can only conclude that this restaurant is reviewed well because: (i) the quality has for some reason gone down; OR (ii) people are deluded by the reputation and are over-hyping the food. I cannot recommend this restaurant. You would be better off going to your local butcher and getting a high-quality, aged steak. Season it with salt and pepper, take care not to completely kill it, and you will get a better result than what I was served at this restaurant. more

WOW! What A Steak 8/31/2010

Wow. Old Homestead has the best steak I have ever tasted. The steak literally melts in your mouth. It is so flavorful, juicy and tender. I love it. Also, the side dishes are great, especially the mac n cheese. more

Incredible 8/15/2010

I like my steak juicy, tender and somewhat bloody. I ordered a medium steak and it was cooled to perfection, came already cut and the mashed potato and broccoli sides were delicious. We topped it with a fresh Bordeaux and it was a truly memorable dining experience. Impeccable service. more

Really gone downhill 8/10/2010

I'm giving them 2 stars out of courtesy - and because the food tasted good. BUT - really it's more than they deserve. My littany of complaints: more

Got my steak wrong 3x 7/29/2010

I had to send my steak back 3 times. When they finally got it right, the other people in my party were almost done their meal. I was really let down by this place. Cons: did not listen to what i wanted more

OUR FIRST VISIT! 7/29/2010

THIS WAS MY FIRST VISIT TO THIS NY LANDMARK. THE ATMOSPHERE IS GREAT AND THE SERVICE IS BEYOND EXCEPTIONAL! MY ONLY GRIPES WERE THAT THE COFFEE WAS BAD AND THE DRINK PRICES WERE A BIT ON THE ""STEEP"" SIDE. (A MODEST SIZED MARGARITA COSTS $17/SCOTCH ON ICE WAS ABOUT THE SAME) THIS DIDN'T BOTHER ME HOWEVER IT IRRITATED MY WIFE. I WAS THEIR SOLELY FOR THE EXPERIENCE. I TOLD HER TO ORDER THE FAMOUS $41 KOBE HAMBURGER BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T LIKE STEAK. IT WAS VERY BLAND AND EXTREMELY LARGE ESPECIALLY FOR ONE PERSON. IT WAS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT WOULD NOT APPEAL TO THE AVERAGE PERSON. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE A ""BEEF CONNOISSEUR"" TO RESPECT IT'S UNUSUAL QUALITY. THE SHRIMP COCKTAILS WERE ENORMOUS. I LOVED IT. I NEVER HAD A SHRIMP THAT LARGE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I ORDERED THE 18 OUNCE NY SIRLOIN. IT WAS PERFECT. OVERALL WE HAD A FABULOUS TIME. THE WAITER WAS AMIABLE AND VERY COURTEOUS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND OLD HOMESTEAD TO ALL WHO HAVE A YEARNING FOR A FINE NY DINING EXPERIENCE! Pros: GREAT MENU OPTIONS, ATMOSPHERE AND SERVICE! Cons: BAD COFFEE AND DRINK PRICES WERE A BIT STEEP more

OK, but a definite tourist trap 10/27/2009

I knew something was amiss when the most exotic domestic beer on the list was Coors Light. In a country blessed with a fantastic array of micro-brews, this is nothing short of a travesty. So a selection from the fairly limited wine list was the go, and it was not a bad drop all things considered. The ladies in our party were a bit overwhelmed by the size of the steaks on the menu, this is certainly not an eatery for the faint of heart. I selected the Tuna Sashimi to start, followed by the 34oz Rib Eye (yup, nearly a Kilo). The Tuna was great, though more pepper seared than sashimi, and the steak was perfectly cooked, if lacking slightly in fat. It was the service that really let the place down. One main course arrived a full 17 minutes after the rest had been delivered and the waiter had disappeared without a trace. I understand that mistakes happen, but when they do it's better to fess up, apologise and explain the dish is on the way, not just disappear leaving the rest of us wondering whether or not we should start. Not even a free coffee was offered by way of compensation, disappointing given this place charges top dollar. Similarly, they lost points on the basics, plates were removed before all diners were finished and not once were our wine glasses refilled, it felt more amateur cafe than fine diner. We tipped because we had to, certainly not because we wanted to. Don't be suckered in by the hype, NYC has many better options available. Pros: Servings are HUGE Cons: The service and selection more

Best Lunch Ever!!! 10/9/2009

I just had one of THE best sandwich I've ever had. I've wanted to had dinner at Old Homestead for a long time, but just haven't made it happen. However, next best thing...lunch...was very good. Order the BLT Crab Cake Sandwich with Kobe bacon! I've never had anything like it. Highly Recommended... Pros: amazing food Cons: slow service more

Best Shrimp Cocktail in USA 9/14/2009

I love the Old Homestead not just for their steaks but also for their Shrimp Cocktail. The size and flavor of their seaford platter shrimp are just out of this world. They are rthe largest I have ever been served and are just outstanding. Pros: Great Basic Steakhouse Menu Cons: Not Close To My Home more

NY's Finest! 8/17/2009

Very friendly and warm atmosphere. Hubby had the Kobe Burger and devoured only 1/2, it was massive and equal to probably 4 regular burgers. The chipotle ketchup is great...although you dont need to put anything on the burger. The lil tater tots that come on the side are by far the bestest! Pros: Mouthwatering Delisciousness Cons: That we can afford to eat here more often! more

Where is the service? 3/30/2009

The place looks great, the food was consistent but the service was awful. I was there several times over the summer and it appeared as if they had turned the corner on their service issues. Lets hope it was just a bad night because the location is great the the place has been wonderfully transformed physically. Pros: very good steaks, nice renovations Cons: so so service more
