The opposite of fancy, this place looks like it's about to go out of business... but no, my friends, In fact I am told by the locals they have the best italian beef in town, and are quite popular! I will say I liked my sandwich, and the hot pepper relish was good- spicy but not too hot. But I wouldnt say it was the best I've ever had. It was good...and worth a visit. But take it for what it is... Also, they are CASH only, which is annoying. more

Nice place if you like foodborne illness. Ick! You're safer at Al's or frankly most of the mom and pops in the city consideing they all buy the same stuff (e.g. presliced Vienna beef and either Marconi or Il Primo Giardiniera and Turano;s or Gonnella--I mean how different can it be?) Gottta love food network for providing fake hype and marketing for what boils down to a reheated product from a restaurant supply vendor. I swear it's like music, people just take what's handed to them by the media. Good luck with that! more

Visited yesterday, after read suggestions for a ""real"" traditional eating place and excellent italian beef. Reality quite different...if ""traditional"" means doubtful cleaning, unsympathetic approach and 15 USD for a mediocre sandwich + fries + soda menu You are in the right place! more

Ordered a beef sandwich and a sausage sandwich with the trimmings and some fries. Pretty cheap, delivery was quick, but the food was nothing great. The beef was better than the sausage, the fries were pathetic. If you're looking for something better, try Al's or Portillos. more

We're pretty sure, anyway - it was awesome. The shop is tiny and the guys behind the counter are characters. The Italian Beef in Chicago is like the Cheesesteak in Philly. There will be five different places saying they've got the best one, when there is really only one place. For the cheesesteak, that's Pat's. In Chicago, the Italian Beef lives at Mr. Beef. I went looking for an Italian Beef and I saw a lot of posers but no real italian beef stands. When you get to Mr. Beef, it looks like a place that slings high quality Italian Beef. No frills, no accoutrements. Dudes slinging beef and talking trash: the sign of quality. The pictures on the wall at the Orleans location are also a good indication that you're in for something magical. The sandwich was magical and I didn't even get it done right (I'm not a hot pepper person). Juicy, tender, packed with meat, and well seasoned. I can't give it enough complements. I also enjoyed the fries: thin and crispy and didn't need ketchup, which is a veritable trifecta for me. I had been hungry since morning and I'm good to go. You can't say enough good things about Mr. Beef. I have been going there since they opened and the quality of their food has been consistently outstanding. Along with the photographs of all the celebs that have visited you will also find numerous Silver Platter awards.
