Consistently Horrible Service and Mediocre Food. 7/17/2011

Horrible Staff! 12/8/2009

If you try to go here on a weekday for lunch, make sure you leave your BABY home! As most Park Slopers know, lunch time is not the best time for local restaurants. So one would think any client is better than none. But when I tried to go with my stroller-riden infant, the staff probably preferred to sit this one out than to accommodate us comfortably. I was offered ONLY the table by the drafty door right next to the only other occupied table (squished between them and the door) instead of letting us sit anywhere in the empty back. I hope other mothers read this before choosing to dine in this place! The food is not even worth the unfriendly experience. Pros: Simply OK food Cons: Bad staff, baby un-friendly more

really good brunch 1/8/2009

I like Moutarde. \r \r I used to come here for Brunch back before my hiatus from eating out (i.e. unemployment for quite a few months). Its good to be back. \r \r I've been twice in the past month, separate Sundays. The first time I had my old favorite, Eggs Royale; I believe two poached on an English muffin with smoked salmon and then the hollandaise sauce. It is not only delicious, but reinvigorates my faith in non-piggy breakfast meats for brunch. The potatoes and little salad were very tasty and brought out both the ""heavy"" of the main bruch-course, and its ""lighteness""; the vinegrette on the salad was just light enough for me fork from the eggs, chomp a salad parcel and wash with coffee in the same mouthful, afterward daintily dabbing my mouth without any looks of disgust from the rather attractive female servers. The potatoes were crisp and hearty enough to help me transition from my pre-brunch state of hunger, to my post-brunch food coma. Yum!\r \r My second time there I had the brunch strip steak. It was just delicious. Other descriptors? Carnivorous yet elegant? I felt like a tiger with great manners eating my cooked natural prey. \r \r Both times the bloody mary's were on par?pretty spicey?the coffee was always refilled, water refills were attended to. Great place in terms of service and food and getting into that post-brunch food coma. Ahhh! Pros: man, this is my first review, but I really like this place. I like that its cozy, snug, and the food and service are great. What else? Cons: Maybe it can be a little cramped in, but that's part of the fun. more

IS THIS PLACE FOR REAL?! 10/19/2008

This so-called-French restaurant is a joke! Why we didn't turn around when we saw the decor is beyond us. If ANYONE has ever seen a restaurant in France that looks like that, please let me know. Actually, don't, because I don't care. \r Well, we learned our lesson because the nasty yellow walls was followed by vegetable sticks instead of bread, followed by cold cafeteria style food. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess they don't have a chef, but a bunch of kids cooking in the kitchen.\r Unbelieveable! \r If it's any indication of how bad it was, it was bad enough for me to come home and type this stupid review because I honestly have much better things to do right now. Consider this my public service for all of the reviews I've read that guided me in the right direction over the years. Pros: The space isn't occupied by another bank Cons: I have to walk 2 blocks to my bank more

We got sick after eating here -- twice! 6/11/2008

I love the decor here, and I love French bistros. I have been here several times and always found the food to be OK -- not great, but not terrible either. The service was usually slow, but if I'm not in a rush I can usually deal with that. The second to the last time we went, my girlfriend was sick later that night. She has a sensitive stomach, so we wound up writing it off (thinking perhaps it had some other cause) and decided to give Moutard another chance a couple of months later. The next time, in spite of ordering totally different dishes, we both became sick. Very sick, actually -- and I do NOT have a sensitive stomach. Either the restaurant is filthy, the food is spoiled, or the staff does not wash their hands after using the bathroom. Any which way, I will never go there again and recommend that you don't either. Pros: you might lose some weight after eating here more

don't let the looks fool you.........terrible service and food. 5/19/2008

\r Al di la was full for the night and we decided to try Moutarde across the street.\r It looked like a cute parisian cafe- except it was really empty and we were cautious why..\r After given us the menu, seemed like an hour until the waiter showed up to take our drinks.\r Then it seemed like another hour to take our food- we were about to leave because waiter seemed to be avoiding us like the plague. The food was dropped off and no eye contact from the waiter. \r To top it off, the food tasted like micro waved frozen packages.\r We couldn't wait to leave, too bad the place is cute and full of potential with maybe a new management. I have a feeling people go there when they can't get into Al di la.\r \r Pros: cute place Cons: service and food more

this is the same as the terrible cafe moutarde -- (renaming will not let you escape bad reviews) 5/18/2008

this place is terrible -- I've been there three times to give it a chance, and it seems to get worse every time. our waitress was distant, couldn't care that we were waiting an eternity, other people who came in after us were served way ahead of us... the waiters who brought the food couldn't have been less caring (with the exception of one gentleman) -- and the food was sub par -- bad, bad bad... and don't know why as the place was only half full. \r \r seems they relisted as moutarde so they could restock with unbad reviews, but don't be fooled! Cons: service more

A dining experience! 2/17/2008

Moutarde allows its diners a dining experience, providing time between each course without that all-to-typical New York ""eat it and be done"" attitude. The preparation and presentation of the food is also a reflection of the establishment's commitment to its diners. I highly suggest the endive and walnut salad as well as any of the pan-seared dishes. The desserts are divine. And to top it all off, you kind of feel like you're in France for the couple of hours you're there! Pros: great service, great atmosphere, great food Cons: some of the tables are a little too close=hearing others' conversations easily more

  • The Scene
Fifth Avenue is newly flooded with lunchtime options, and peckish Slopers won't find a more charming option than this. Parisian bistro chic meets countryside kitsch in the buttery-walled bar and dining room, decked with signature ceramic mustard and spice jars. As sunbeams pouring through the large windows give way to soft sconce lights, the laid-back afternoon crowd yields to a sexier scene.

    The Food
The restaurant's menu features artfully rethought bistro classics. Namesake mustard adds textured zest to the perfect gruyere-smothered croque monsieur and light, flavorsome body to the house vinaigrette. Dinnertime highlights include luscious tuna and salmon tartare kissed with creme fraiche, caviar and hints of mustard oil. A potato and leek gratin accompanying toothsome gigot d'agneau is redolent of truffles, and must be closely guarded from jealous dining companions. But it's the solid steak frites that will keep this place in business.
