Chillaxing 4/20/2010

Got to Mobays, 15 minutes early for 6:00 reservation. Tour group had completely occupied the entire restaurant. Bar full as well. Tour bus late picking group up. Stood at bar to wait. Watched ESPN in HD. Seated around 6:15/20. Still not bad. Staff friendly - kept asking us if we were doing okay - appreciated that. Once seated, service was great. Drinks, appetizers and food served promptly. Drinks were excellent. Real easy going down. Had the tropical martini. Nice. Wasn't crazy about the cornbread, but others enjoyed it. For appetizers we had cod fish cakes, sweet plaintains and barbecue chicken wings. The cod fish cakes and plaintains were excellent. The cakes were firm, not too salty and wonderfully flavored. The plaintains were perfect. Not overly sweet and blended well with the flavor of the codfish. Wasn't crazy about the barbecue wings. They were the last appetizer to go. Had St. Louis ribs, mac and cheese, greens and table shared yams. Ribs, large - a huge portion. Good texture to the meat, but too spicy for my taste, as were the greens, just a little too much kick. Enjoyed mac and cheese (just enough cheese) and yams (perfectly sweet). Overall, a good experience. If we went again I would avoid the barbecue, it just isn't for me. But overall, a very good experience. Pros: Great Drinks, Good Atmosphere Cons: Tiny Bar, Wait to be Seated more

Just Moved into the Neighborhood 4/11/2009

I just moved into the neighborhood and I think that I have found my ""Cheers"". After two visits, they literally did know my name. The barbecue is a hidden winner on the menu, it's not a barbecue restaurant, but the Dry Rubbed, Hickory and Mesquite Smoked Ribs that I had last night, were the best that I have ever eaten. Smoky, with a tangy sauce, complete with tender candied yams and collard greens that would have made my mama smile. My dining partner had the Escovitched Snapper, it was freshly fried perfectly covered with a melange of pickled and peppered vegetables and spices. She had the Mac & Cheese and Garlicy Sauteed Vegetables, YUM. The cornbread with sauce, is worth going to enjoy, just on it's own. Good live music and the bar was lively, with setting on both sides, looks like quite a singles scene. We almost missed the place, since it's so tucked away on 125th Street, put it is so pretty inside. Altogehter a totally relaxing evening. Hello Cheers, thanks for welcoming me to the neighborhood. Pros: Great Barbecue & Seafood-Sexy Bar, Pretty Place, Parking Cons: Wednesday, Thursday Great, Friday Crowded more

My Worst experience ever 2/23/2009

I went to Mobay last week with my friends four of us at about 8 p.m. we were seated in the back after the waiter seated us he never came back until 20 minutes after to hand us the menu and walked away I called him and asked him if we could have some water and he went back and come five minutes after. When he finally come back to take our orders my girlfriend was on decided on what she wanted to order and he just walked away with the look as if we were disturbing him. Finally we got our food everything was going fine until we receive the bill we call the server over to a table to ask him what was going on with the bill because they were things on the bill that we did not order he then told me he will go take care of it was a computer error. My girlfriend then advised me to check my statement when it comes in because Mobay of the history of double charging people watch your account. When he brought back the bill It he just tossed it on the table and walked away we were sitting right at the door and I could overhear the servers talking nasty about my table saying that?s they don?t like broke people coming here this place is not for everybody and how he wished for my table to just go. This was one of my worst dining experience and I will never go back there ever again. May be the server is right it?s not the place for everyone because I didn?t allow them to charge me for something that I didn?t eat .so good luck and watch your bill. Don?t believe the hype more

Great couples spot! 2/16/2009

Me and my fiance patronized the Mobay and we were very satisfied the service was good and the food was even better. Nice live Jazz band. We will be back for sure. Pros: ambience, service and food Cons: kind of small; can get overcrowded at times more

One Great Harlem Find 7/11/2008

I'm always keeping an eye out for great Harlem restaurants, being Jamaican and Southern too I've been pretty disillusioned by NYC BBQ--and therefore I often settled for less. I had my doubts about MoBay uptown, but boy was I schooled this past Fourth of July! I went with a 4 person party. We were not seated very promptly but it WAS a Holiday and there were about 5 birthday parties being attended to. Our wait was about than 15-20minutes. Pros: Serious South/Carib BBQ and Fish, friendly West Indian waiters, great drinks, exciting shopping area Cons: Crowding on holidays. more

Good authentic Jamaican food! 2/24/2008

Finally a Jamaican restaurant that did not disappoint. I dined at Mobay this past weekend with 2 family members and we thoroughly enjoyed our food. We all have taste buds for authentic Jamaican food and must say we were very pleased. We ordered jerked chicken, escovitch king fish with bammie and snapper rundown. The rum cake rivals Tortuga a specialty cake from the Cayman Islands; it was simply delicious. Pros: Great food Cons: Too noisey more

A Most Marvelous Meal! Best Grooves 10/21/2007

The first thing that I noticed about Mobay Uptown Restaurant was the relaxing decor of muted earth tones that just felt like ""home"". Even beforeI tasted any of the Caribbean or Southern foods that I had heard so much about, I knew that my trips to Harlem would be quite frequent; a natural order, after finding such a great place! Pros: The friendly and relaxing room first cayches your eye. Cons: none. more

Mediocre food, indifferent service. Go somewhere else. 8/21/2007

Why didn't I check here first? Live and learn. My husband and I were stuck for a place to have dinner, and we wanted something in our neighborhood. We went in, and sat ourselves as we didn't see any sign of a hostess, waiter, etc. After sitting there for 10 minutes, we finally caught someone's eye to tell them we'd like to have dinner (I didn't want them to think we wanted to occupy a table to just have a drink and listen to band). Pros: band was ok Cons: terrible service more

Veggie meal okay but great cornbread & live music 4/15/2007

As a vegetarian living in Harlem, I was glad to find a restaurant with a vegetarian section on the menu. I ordered the BBQ ""Chicken,"" which was okay, pretty much vegetable protein smothered in BBQ sauce. My mango martini reeked of cheap vodka, and the sweet plantain was okay. I ordered the coconut pineapple cake for dessert, which they were out of so I got the chocolate cake, which was too rich for my taste. However my date was happy with his organic salad and coconut shrimp. My highlights were the delicious cornbread, the live music, and the great service. We tipped our waiter a couple dollars extra in addition to the 18% already included. I would give it another try and order a different drink, entree, and the coconut pineapple cake. more

Terrible service 2/13/2007

I haven't eaten here; I just stopped in for drinks a couple of times. Each time the service was worse than the last time. The bartenders print up your bill and give it to you before even serving you your drink. What if you want to have more than one? You're expected to pay for each round before or while you drink it. Who does that? Also, their selection of liquor leaves alot to be desired. We had to wait forever to order a drink because if you're not a friend of the bartender's, good luck trying to get their attention. Once they finally come over to you, they act like they are doing you a huge favor by even talking to you. You're made to feel very unwelcome. On top of everything the owner has publicly complained that people don't tip because her restaurant is uptown. Um, no. People tip for good service; when you don't provide any, you don't get tips. That should ""tip"" her off that she's doing something really wrong. more

Good food, but service is less than stellar 2/11/2007

I have been to Mobay on 125th Street several times. I keep going back for the food. It's great to find a soul food restaurant that offers vegetarian entrees (and delicious ones at that). The atmosphere is nice. The last time I went, though, I was not happy at the end of the meal. We received our bill and saw that the gratuity had already been added. I know that most restaurants have a policy regarding large groups, but we were a party of 2! When we inquired about this, we found out that now they automatically add the tip to every bill. I was not happy. I do not appreciate it when restaurants take the liberty of deciding how much you are going to tip. That's not a tip then! I am a generous tipper, but I don't like anyone else deciding for me. The service at Mobay could use lots of improvement and when customers do not have the ability to reward good service with a tip of their choice, poor service continues. Why do the servers need to give better service if they know that they will always get that good tip at the end of the meal...regardless of how lackluster their service is? Pros: Good vegetarian options, relaxing atmosphere Cons: Service, gratuity automatically added to every bill more

Simply Divine! 1/4/2007

My husband and I made our first ever trip to Harlem and what a treat to dine at MoBay. We devoured every morsel of the coconut curry salmon and curried goat. The tea left a hint of honey and everything else in between. And oh-my-gosh! What a heavenly beginning with the cornbread and pineapple sauce! It reminded me of my grandmother's cakes when we used to visit her in the Creole French speaking parts of Louisiana. We were graced and honored to meet the chef, however, we wanted to take him back with us to Dallas! We had such a relaxing time; we intend to relocate in the near future. I've told EVERYONE we know; take the A train & stop in at MoBay, for it is truly an experience. Pros: Ambience perfect; Decor Excellent; Menu exquisite; Service very timely. Cons: We understand space is tight in NYC, so it was no problem. more

Great food, great wait service, great music 10/11/2006

I have dined here several times, each time I bring a new group with me to share this diamond in the rough. The food is excellent, the wait service is great (very friendly) and the music is wonderful (especially the Untouchables). You will not leave this place hungry. It's a little tight in there but that can be solved by making reservations at least two days in advance. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

No frills BBQ 8/6/2006

We stopped in bt chance. Its a small place but well decorated. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surpirsed. We ordered Braggin Rights ribs, St. Louis style ribs and brisket. The portions were ample and tasty. They started us out with a corn bread, much fancier than I have ever had, but was delicious. Desert was Death byt Chocolate Cake... excellent way to finish it off. Totally enjoyed the food. Prices are a little expensive for BBQ but again portions were ample. Pros: Great ribs and portions Cons: a little expensive for BBQ, be aware of auto tipping so you don't over tip more

Fabulous Cat Fish 7/31/2006

I am in the process of viewing every Soul Food Restaurant and this one is a Uptown Special when I need to impress my family again. The ambience was inviting but the service was slow. If you go to the Apollo please have dinner after at Mobay's uptown. I ordered food from home at the Brooklyn Mobay's I wasn't to please with it except the Catfish. Pros: The Food was excellent Cons: The Service way too slow more

Umm, Umm,Umm what a fabulous place to dine. 4/4/2006

I have been to Mobay's several times and I have not been dissatisfied yet. The ambience is so inviting. Enjoying the company of live music is always a treat and the staff is superb. Sometimes the waiting area can become a little overcrowded but, it is well worth the wait. I love you Mobay's! more
