Always astounded by my results! 10/20/2011

Sara is always the most reliable, wonderful hairstylist I have ever ever ever been to! I just got my hair cut and colored by Sara Myer at Mitchell James Salon in Richmond Heights. It looks fabulous to say the least. However, I am not surprised by this because she has been doing my hair for 4 years. She has been with me through all my different lengths, cuts, and colors. Through every change in style she has made my hair look better than it ever did before, even when I was going to the highest end salons in St. Louis. Hands down she is the best hair professional that I have ever met. Sara is always continuing her education about the most up to date techniques and trends. I love this about Sara. I take comfort that she will always give me the best advice on how to keep my hair healthy, as well as looking glamorous. She knows how to do everything !!!!! Keratin treatments, wedding styles, awesome coloring, the best most thorough haircut you could ever want, the list could go on and on. I always go to Sara to ask about different products before I buy them. She has such a vast product knowledge that I know she will tell me her honest opinion rather than just try to sell me something I don't need. I trust my hair to no one but Sara....and I have tried A TON of different stylist until I met her. If you aren't happy with your current stylist or have no one to claim as "your" stylist you should definitely go see Sara. What else can I say?! She is THE BEST! So if you are up in the air about who is going to do your hair next call Mitchell James Salon and ask for an appointment with Sara Myer. I assure you that you will be pleased, if not blown away, with the results!!!!! more

They Put Me In Tears 9/16/2011

I just moved to St. Louis and was told by one of my boyfriend's friends to go to James Mitchell Salon. I had to cancel my first appointment, but did so within 24 hours. When I went in for my first appointment about a week later, the hairstylist James reached out his hand to shake mine and said, "so why did you have to cancel your appointment last week?...you know we're a very busy salon and we've been booked for the entire month so just keep that in mind next time...I mean, we should charge you but I'll let it go this time." I stood there, completely shocked thinking to myself, did this really just happen? I continued to follow him back to the chair. Looking back I should have just left then and there. He acted as though he was better than me the entire cut. He was constantly arguing with the woman who washed my hair, and she would talk about him to me during my hairwash and when she dryed my hair. She even said how bad my haircut look. When he actually started cutting my hair he said he'd give me "east coast waves". I never requested that. He cut a minimum two inches off my hair. Filled it with 7 different products. And then charged me 75dollars. IF you want to go to a salon where you feel talked down to, or where they don't give you any respect, then go to this salon. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my life and I never CRIED after gettiing a hair cut. Maybe the other stylists are great but mine (the owner) was not. This is by far the most unprofessional business I have ever been in and I would not ever referr anyone to this salon if they are in their right frame of mind. also, i would give less than a one star rating but it says I need to give a minimum of one. more

best hairstylist ever! 7/11/2011

I was in St. Louis for the summer and really needed a haircut. I was really nervous about going to someone I didn't know especially because I'm pretty particular about my hair. I went to the salon and was sent to Sara; I absolutely loved her work. I actually came back to St Louis a few months later and got my hair cut again by Sara. I just got my hair cut last week back home in NY by my usual stylist and she asked me where I got my hair cut last because it looked really good. I wish I could afford to travel to St. Louis every time I needed a haircut!!! more

Super Salon 7/6/2011

I have been going to this salon for over 10 years. I have never had a bad experience there. As a matter of fact, I have sent several friends there and they all love it! I recently sent my daughter there for a cut and up-do for her prom. They did an awesome job and then did her make up. She looked wonderful and was very pleased. I plan on referring more people to Mitchell James Salon in the future! more

beware not your normal saloon 4/28/2011

Very strange. If this is the type of salon that James Michell puts his name behind, then you should be concerned. He does not hire stylists that work for him. They are actually a bunch of independent hair stylists. You pay the stylists themselves not the James Mitchell saloon. So if that does not give you an uncomfortable feeling then beware. Had a haircut by Sara. It was the worst haircut ever. Guess there are no standards for talent there. Asked for a straightforward trim and that I had a side part. The haircut was the worst I ever had. The way she layered it was horrible and she cut one side longer than the other side. She actually had the audacity to say she did that on purpose and it looked great being uneven. I was so shocked that I did not want her to touch my hair again. Beware, unless you know someone specifically. Do not just look at reviews and assume all stylists at this saloon meet some standard. Not the case. more

Mitchell James Salon is a rip off 4/20/2011

This place is a rip off. I purchased a mani/pedi, facial, haircut, and massage package to give as gifts. When we tried to redeem them they said there would be up charges. Up charges for all the services were more than the purchased package. I feel I was intentionally mislead. It was a bait and switch lie. How embarrassing to tell the individuals I gave the gifts to. I didn't get to test their talent or lack there of, but I was ripped off by Mitchell James! more

Home to master sytlists 10/12/2010

I've read some of the 1 star reviews from Groupon customers & the blame should be on Groupon & not this salon. Groupon hi-pressures businesses with BIG promises but neglects to tell them of the huge pitfalls. This Groupon thing is not so great for service businesses since Groupon takes a HUGE cut, 50% of the coupon price. I have had first hand experience with 3 stylists for over 10 years who have a great following cuz they're excellent in their work... Monique, Tymm, and J.D. Yes, the place is busy, it is not a day spa, but a place to go to get fabulous work done on your haircut, color and style. I've seen too many other complaints about the Groupon program not being all it is cracked up to be... so I am careful what I buy from them. more

Long Time Client 7/16/2010

James Mitchell has been styling my hair since 1999. On my first visit I had no specific style in mind, no starlet or rock star I wanted to resemble, and allowed James free rein. The results were such a radical change for me that I almost didn't recognize myself and left the salon fearing that I had made a huge mistake. However the following days were a chorus of compliments and inquiries "Where did you get your hair done?' Family, friends, co-workers and customers all remarked on how flattering the new cut and color were. The pattern has continued for 11 years. James is constantly taking classes and attending professional seminars but whatever the new techniques, different colors, seasonal styles, however updated the look there is one constant: always the resulting hairstyle is flattering to me. From viewing my 'Beauty' appointments as an indulgence my husband now eyes me savvily and notes 'It's time to see the Hair Guy.' In the intervening years James has opened his own salon, I have retired and moved to South County but I still make the trek to Clayton. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Pros: Qualified Creative Stylist Cons: Short walk from parking more

Great new do 7/7/2010

I started going to James about 6 months ago and it has been great. A friend recommended him and then I saw that they donated a gift certificate to my child's school auction so I set the appt. James had to hear about how I have basically had the same haircut for 10 years and he made recommendations and now I have gradually (at my request) got my new do in place and I love it!! I now send my husband and kids too! They are a great salon and very focused on happy customers and making a difference in the community. Pros: Creative, friendly and on time Cons: None really more

Groupon - Bait & Switch Scam? 2/7/2010

Any other unsatisfied "Groupon" customers out there? Me, and several friends purchased a "Groupon" in December for $50 that included a hair cut, mini-facial and manicure. It seemed like a great deal. I called the salon the same day I purchased the Groupon, but was told they couldn't schedule me for the facial or manicure. Their claim was they only had 2 people that performed these services and couldn't even talk to me until next spring. HOWEVER if I "upgraded" the facial or manicure, then miraculously they could schedule me in. This seemed suspicious that only if I spent more money could the 2 people have more time in their schedule. I had to call several times just to get them to put me on a waiting list. They were "bothered" by my phone calls. This was just the first of my complaints. My daughter had the worst haircut I've ever seen (not to mention the $25 upcharge for drying her hair). She HAD long thick hair, to her waist, but came home with a crooked cut nearly up to her shoulders. It looked as if the stylist had braided her hair and cut the braid off, not bothering to straighten the ends. She had to reschedule to have it fixed it was so bad. She was lucky, when I went to get my cut, I had a partial highlight as well. OMG - the placement of the color was horrible. I have stripes and polka-dots of blonde randomly placed in my hair. I left the salon with 1/2" roots. The cut took him less than 5 minutes, it was pouring rain and he still charged me $15 for a 3 minute blow dry. As I mentioned, it was pouring rain and he didn't have the common courtesy to even let me decide if I wanted to pay extra for the blow dry - just sprung it on me at the checkout. My hair was soaking wet by the time I reached the parking lot. Parking is inconvenient. I called the owner to express my dissatisfaction of my hair, but he never even called me back. The "manager" called me back with a defensive argumentative attitude. The sytlist tried to fix my hair, but only made it worse. You also have to pay an extra $15-$25 to have your hair blow dried. How unprofessional to quote a price for a haircut, but not include styling your hair. Maybe it is "common in the industry" to upcharge for blow-drying, but as consumers, we should refuse to pay extra for drying our hair. What self respecting stylist would allow you to walk out of their salon with dripping wet hair? And how could they know if the cut is right without drying it? Next they will be charging rental fees for the smocks they offer and coat check fees. It's February, and still they have no appointments available for the services I paid for. I would NOT recomment this salon to anyone. I would NOT recommend this salon at all. Pros: Groupon Cons: Arrogant, caddy attitude in the salon more

Fantastic salon for an afternoon of pampering 9/23/2009

Prime location! Great atmosphere and well organized. The staff is always punctual and pleasent. James often rewards clients with in-house specials for manicures, massages, etc. He gives an honest and innovative approach to hair care. Consults with new clients to better understand who they are and what they "really" want. He's up on the latest cut and color techniques. Provides individualized total treatment plans to restore healthy hair. Best of all he actually listens to his clients, isn't afraid of critisism and presents various options for exciting new or exitsting styles. Pros: Experienced stylists current on latest techniques & products Cons: prefer $$ to debit/CC more

Completely Satisfied 1/5/2009

I recently left my old Salon in Chesterfield and used Citysearch to find a new one in the St. Louis area. I stumbled upon the Mitchell James Salon website and decided to try it out. I was set up with Michelle and Cate, Michelle specializing in color and Cate in cutting. I immediatly fell in love with the atmosphere inside the salon along with loving my hair. Plus I loved the fact that it was full service; manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. I was able to get my nails done the last time I was in and now I drive in from Mizzou to get my hair done due to I'm scared to get it done up there. The only negative thing I would really have to say would be it gets a little loud sometimes with a good amount of people in there. I would reccomend this salon to anyone and would be satisfied with the fact that they would receive the same amount of attention as I did. Pros: Modern, great people, in a reasonable price range, beautiful area Cons: loudness more

Awesome Cut! 1/2/2009

I live and work downtown, had heard about Mitchell James in Clayton. I scheduled an appointment with James as he cuts a friends hair and I wanted a similar cut (longer, shaggish, surfer look). I liked all the different tools he used including a razor which gave me a cool shredded look. He also sold me Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray that I love. Great Place!!!! Pros: Parking, Location, Price, Multi-Service Cons: Hwy 40 Closing more

where casual meets chic. 10/30/2008

I have been going to this salon forever. I have seen it through it's expansions over the past 12 years. I have multiple services done there, always with satasfaction. What prompted me to leave a review is because the owner paired down their Bumble and Bumble product to carry a product called Unite. I was so impressed by his answer of why he went to Unite, he said,".... it was because Bumble had gone up in price, but had not adjusted their formulas to compete with a more non-carcenagenic world, Additionally, it is less expensive per ounce for the client". He clearly had the customers best interest in mind when making this decision. He could have kept with this product and,"stuck it to the client", but he did'nt. He went on to say they had a incredible continuing education program. All the right answers in my book! You get great services for a reasonable price. P.S.- James charges $55 for a haircut and blowdry. It sounds like eelise14379 has a insecurity issue. more

Elegant Salon for show, not worth your time and money 10/2/2008

Elegant salon, but all show. Staff more focused on selling you other services and products, than cutting your hair. A few cuts were made on dripping wet hair and then dried fluffy. The true look of your hair cut will be a surprise after you shower at home. I had mine cut by the owner himself and the time he spent on cutting my hair was less than 5 minutes. Don't waste your time and money. Pros: ambience, parking Cons: service more
