Best

While atmosphere and service in any restaurant can vary, I find the "Gill & Grill" to be a great hang-out spot. Right? The drinks are stiff and the food is great. Happy hour so...

Worst

Went to Max Gill & Grill tonight (remember this as the old Hemingways) and the 5280 Specials were below average.

Great food & great service 10/24/2011

My group of friends goes out once a month, to a new place. We pick some place we have never been. This location and the atmosphere was very nice. Very cozy. Pros: null Cons: null more

A great hang out in a fun neighborhood 3/18/2011

My husband and I have been to Max Gill & Grill several times. First, if you want seafood, or rather, if you want fish, go Mon.-Friday. This is true of most seafood restaurants. Having read several of the reviews, I wonder what day of the week they went. Keep in mind this is Denver. Fresh seafood is hard to come by let alone on a weekend. more

Good Food, Great Service... 3/1/2011

I have been to Max's a couple times and have not been disappointed - great oysters and specials. The wait staff is always super friendly! Nice relaxed atmosphere... more

Max Gill Kinda a Thrill 12/30/2010

While atmosphere and service in any restaurant can vary, I find the "Gill & Grill" to be a great hang-out spot. Right? The drinks are stiff and the food is great. Happy hour sometimes is like a classic dive bar, only safer and cleaner. There's a guy downing oysters and chasing them with beer, a few captivating ladies at the next table (who may or may not want you to buy them a drink) and the proverbial dirty old man...who doesn't love a dirty old man? I've had more fun just having a drink and hitting up tasty happy hour appetizers and quietly sitting at the bar, ominously writing in my notebook and observing the dynamic of a neighborhood pub. Makes me miss home a wee bit, but not enough to leave Denver. more

Repeated FAILURE on Service 5/4/2010

I love the specials that this place runs, & I love the atmosphere, but I have finally had it with this place. Please take the time to read this as I seriously have loved the food & tried repeatedly to put up with the BS service of this place. Pros: Good Specials Cons: HORRIBLE Service more

They don't give a hoot about their customers 3/29/2010

OK - so Max's is a local spot. One would think they would take care of their guests since they are likely to live in the neighborhood and have the potential to be repeat customers - nope. My husband and I went in for dinner one night and wanted to use an AmEx gift card to pay for dinner. Long story short - the idiot server swiped it incorrectly so they told us we needed to use another form of payment and the money would be refunded by AmEx after 24 hours. First of all - what if we didn't have another form of payment? Secondly, it took them a half hour to figure all this out and they didn't even offer to take a drink off our bill. Horrible way to end an evening that was decent up until that point. Pros: Nothing's worth the stupid management Cons: Poor management and customer care more

The Tuna Salad was incredibly fresh and Tasty 2/24/2010

The service was perfect. Our waitress was Sarah and she made our visit very special. Her friendly smile and genuine desire to meet our every need made the occassion most memorable. The food was well prepared and delicious. Sarah brought it to us promptly and served it with just the proper flourish. She seemed to know intuitively what we needed when we needed it. more

Go Enjoy Dinner! 1/25/2010

We came about the restaurant on accident. We were headed to a different restaurant when we walked by and thought we would try it out. It was busy when we walked in but we were given attention right away. We had a great waitress and felt very comfortable from the start. This is something we look for in neighborhood restaurants even though we dont frequent them much. We ordered a few cocktails throughout dinner and they were great. The only downfall is that they do offer a happy hour but only if you are lucky enough to get one of the few seats in the bar area. Our food was good, nothing extrodinary, but very good. We really enjoyed ourselves. The only other thing I would complain about is that they were a bit overpriced. Our bill was over $100 for the two us and we didnt do anything lavish.( 2 martinis, 2 glasses of wine, 1 appetizer, and 2 entrees) So long story short its a great place, just expect to spend a little. Neighborhood restaurants with good food and service are hard to come by these days:) Pros: Great environment, friendly staff,& good food Cons: it got a little pricey more

Great place to go for drinks and appetizers after work! Pros: Great Happy Hour Cons: None! more

Great seafood 1/27/2009

I have met the owner of this place and they are very nice. I'm not huge on seafood but their food is exceptional. It is a very comfortable place and great service. more

Overpriced seafood. 1/8/2009

We ate there January 2009, and it was less than adequate. The ribs were "reheated" from the night before, the seafood was "old, grey and certainly not fresh." The wine list was so overpriced that we opted for iced tea instead.....we should have gotten a clue when we walked in at 12noon to an EMPTY restaurant. The fireplace was nice but certainly not worth "$60- for- two -nice !" You're better off going to the grocery and cooking your own seafood ! more

Great location, better food 8/20/2008

This restaurant is in such a great neighborhood. Even better - the food is to die for. I've had the Ahi Tuna Salad, the whole crabs, the lobster rolls, etc. Everything has been fantastic every time I've come. This is a great place to bring a bunch of friends on a Friday night and just relax, eat and drink. more

Best seafood 5/16/2008

I have been to this place twice so far. Pros: Good food, service, people, and environment Cons: The second visit, we were given small portions for a lot of $$$ more

Great for seafood lovers! 5/14/2008

After hearing that Hemingway's changed over to Max Gill & Grill, I decided to bring a few people there to try it out. The atmosphere is a bit similar to Hemingway's (very Floridian and a bit upscale), but the menu is much better! We had king crab, swordfish, raw 'Asian' oysters (to die for), fish and chips, cioppino, and more! Everything was great! The waiter was very cool and comped us a drink that we didn't care for. The prices are not unreasonable, but don't expect Long John Silver's. There are a few items for the non-seafood lover, but this isn't really the place to take them. I'm surprised to hear about some of the bad reviews, but I think they are just flukes. Definitely going again! more

Overpriced below average food 5/11/2008

Our family went to Max Gill and Grill for the Mother's Day brunch, and were very disappointed. The food looked like it had been prepared and put in the chaffing dishes the night before and cooked way beyond the point of being fresh or appealing. Some of the seafood on the buffet smelled very bad. The one good thing on the buffet was the ceviche. Almost all of the other items were barely edible. To add insult to injury, they charged us the full $28 for our 2 year old when it said on the reservation website that kids under 5 would eat free. When challenged about the charge, we were told that our son had been observed to eat a couple of plates of food (our son is a very light eater). If you can't put a good buffet together for Mother's Day and are just in it to make a profit, don't bother wasting your customer's time. Pros: Ceviche Cons: Everything else more

Out of advertised special - not worth the trip 2/25/2008

We went to Max Gill & Grill as part of Denver Restaurant Week for the $52.80/couple menu. We had 8 in our party and arrived at 6 pm on Sunday. We were immediately told that they were "out" of ribs and no substitution was offered (at least not one that would fall within the $52.80 per couple price range). As the $52.80 menu was heavy on seafood, there really was only one other choice for those in our party that didn't like seafood - an adequate but unmemorable roasted half chicken. It seems to me that if one of a restaurant's specialties is ribs and they advertise that dish on a special menu for a promotional week - the ribs should be available. The waitress did come back and say we could order off the regular menu, but that there was no other pork or beef substitute that would fall within the $52.80 deal. The martinis were very good, but the service was very average. Definitely won't go again! Pros: martinis were good! Cons: they were out of their advertised special; average service more

Average, average, average 5/9/2007

I have been 4 or 5 times now because I live so close and the atmosphere is very good. We hoped that the change from Hemingway's and with the owner from Wash Park Grille getting involved, this place would get better but thats not the case. Instead we got increased prices with the same quality of food. A large menu with no stand outs and not one thing my friends or I have tried that makes you think "I'll get that again". Service has been very good but with weak drinks and average food, we typically leave somewhat disappointed. The whole Gaylord dining scene needs to step it up. To live so close and find yourself constantly driving elsewhere to eat is disappointing. Pros: Ambience Cons: Average food more

Went for happy hour 4/7/2007

I was here once for happy hour and was disappointed. more

Wonderful Food 4/6/2007

We had a great time at Max Gill and Grill. The Pomegranate Mojito and crab legs were fabulous. There was a nice price range of options and the bar scene looked fun as well with a DJ setting up in the evening! Pros: Great food and good prices, fun bar scene more
