After a fairly extensive search for a good reception venue I selected Madigan's for it's location in historic Occoquan on the river, the quality of the food we had eaten in the restaurant, the charm of the upstairs reception area that would be pre-decorated for the Christmas holidays, and the reasonable pricing. Cathy was willing to negotiate on the pricing due to our reception taking place on a Monday afternoon and since I would be bringing my own wedding cake which is normally included in the price. I was even able to swap the extra desserts that are typically part of the menu for a champagne toast instead. I also made one equal swap for one menu item I didn't care for. The open bar was paid on a per consumption basis instead of a flat fee per person which I also appreciated. I was also able to negotiate a price for younger children as well as toddlers/babies at no cost. I didn't really like paying a $1 per person cake cutting fee to bring in my own cake, but that price is on the low end of what you can expect at other places. One guest had a food allergy and she made sure the recipe for the one item that included the ingredient was changed for our wedding day. She had a few different handouts with guidelines, menus, timing of meetings, etc. that made the process go smoothly. I rely heavily on email and sometimes it would take more than 24 hours for her to respond but none went more than a few days without response--I think voicemail may be a better way to reach her. Cathy was always very professional but started to loosen up a little by the end. She is not your typical warm and fuzzy, bubbly wedding coordinator so don't get offended by her 'all business' approach to the meetings. She gave me helpful feedback on my tentative timeline for the day and their previous relationship with Nelson Coffman DJ services made that part of the planning process easier for me as well. Each of the four meetings with her were very efficient which I appreciated. With another wedding reception the day before mine that wanted to change the colors of some of the decor, Cathy was still willing to change it back to her original decor in time for my reception since I preferred her color scheme compared to the other brides'. The site was lovely with all the decorations and Cathy made sure we kept on schedule the entire afternoon. Despite choosing to just have hors d'oeuvres for our short, midafternoon reception it appeared that everyone went through the line at least once before food started to run out and I enjoyed tasting all the menu items myself. A waiter specifically came to our table to get our drink orders which we really appreciated and we, of course, went through the buffet line first. We had requested one high chair at three different tables and those were set up in advance to our arrival. I did not have a huge amount of table decorations but everything I did provide was set up exactly to the specifications I gave her and we were able to borrow a few things like vases and candy dishes (she also has toasting glasses and cake cutting tools available if needed). Candles on a mirror under a hurricane globe are also included at no cost. She has a number of different linen colors. I was hoping for gold ones when we first met which were not available but when she decided to purchase a set Cathy sent me an email to let me know she now did have the gold tablecloths I had been asking about. It's still a bit shocking just how much reception venues & food cost even for just hors d'ouvres but with all the added services included I think it was a fair deal. If I have future events that need a venue and catering, Madigans will certainly be on the top of the list to consider. more

While we were in Occoquan we ate lunch at Madigan's Waterfront Restaurant at 201 Mill Street. It was a hot day but we still opted to eat outside, overlooking the river, where they were dredging. Romantic? Not really but it didn't smell like a river, so that's something. :) Plus we got to see geese and ducks.\r Ambiance: I'd give it 22/30. It was pleasant and not as cheasy-looking as a lot of seafood places. The umbrellas kept the sun off and there was enough seating to have plenty of water-side tables.\r Service: 28/30. We had a server who had a trainee with her. This can sometimes be a hassle for customers but this experience was delightful. The two of them played off each other and it was more like having two dedicated servers for the two of us. The primary server was knowledgeable about the menu and specials.\r Food: 24/30. Everything was tasty, attractively presented and fresh. The menu had a huge variety of seafood options plus three additional daily specials. We had the fried clams appetizer which were larger, moister, lighter and less greasy than I'd expected. They were quite good but I would have preferred a little more flavoring--perhaps a touch of cayenne or even black pepper. Hubby had the tortilla tilapia (excellent) and I had the Cajun mahi-mahi (good.) Both came with fresh salad and a couple of sides. Hubby had a wheat beer which hit the spot on a hot day. I had their white flight of wine. It was strange in that they brought me three white wines with a place mat that explained what each one was but the wines didn't seem to relate to each other in any way (a Riesling, a Pinot Grigio, and a Chardonnay from different wineries/regions.) They were all all right but I got the feeling the restaurant was offering a flight because it was a way to sell more wine, rather than because someone had put together intriguing combinations. more

Location is everything! I visit Northern Virginia often to see family and outside of Old Town Alexandria or DC riverfront locations, the setting here is incredible. It is a true destination and a special place to bring friends and family. It is my favorite place to visit when I am in town. It offers something very different, actually, which is a quaint village setting. The historic town of Occoquan is a real Virginia treasure. The restaurant is right in the middle of the main street of the little town and right on the river. There is a beautiful bridge over the river to look at and a charming riverwalk/boardwalk to stroll on after your meal. The town is adorable with several shops and ice cream parlors so you can truly make an afternoon out of it.\r \r The restaurant is very spacious with different areas inside and out. I recently dined upstairs for their prix fixe wine dinner which was many many delightful courses and yummy local wines to taste. Every seat in the room was filled that night and it was a wonderful evening. I have spent lovely afternoons on the deck enjoying the live music, beautiful scenery and friendly patrons all around. The deck is especially lively in the warmer weather. I once experienced a beautiful rain shower over the river while I was there that we could watch and listen to from the safety of the covered deck. The roof over the deck also provides shade so no need to worry about the sun in your face.\r \r The restaurant is very clean and constantly being updated. The bar and restrooms were all brand new when I went for the wine dinner the other night. The staff is courteous, the prices are very reasonable and I can always count on a relaxing and enjoyable experience there. Highly recommend!! more

Perfect Day My family and love to search the area for fun new places and stumbled upon our new favorite. Madigan's Waterfront is located on the water in Occoquan VA in a peaceful town away from the madness of the mall areas. We had shrimp and crab nachos, the crab chowder and mini crab cakes to start. All were excellent suggestions from out waitress. My wife loved the chicken Oscar & I loved the Surf and Turf. Our Kids split the big fish sandwich and we all shared the oversized Madigan's moutian. This was a treat for my family and I. P.S the waterfront view is great. more

Lunch four times over the last couple of years, and never a bad meal. The last time was in the back room by the window overlooking the river...... and it was wonderful. We elected to have several appetizers as 'shared variety' with a lite fruity Blue Moon to take care of the road dust. We've always had later lunches so service has never been a problem. Atmosphere is relaxing and always repeatable. more

Your staff couldn’t have been more attentive and responsive/timely in making the celebration of parent’s 50 Wedding Anniversary dinner a huge success. Had our rehearsal dinner at Madigan's in the down stairs area of the restaurant. We were segregated from the other patrons which worked out just fine. Beth Hansen was outstanding in helping out with the dinner selections for our guests and the colors of linens and the layout of room. The steaks (perfect!) , salmon, and chicken breasts were all very good. I defiantly recommend the cheesecake with chocolate moose. We ran a tab for the alcohol which was by the drink. We served wine by the bottle and we were able to take with us what wasn't consumed. I recommend Madigan's a a perfect venue for celebrating any special event. more
