Best

I've been dining weekly at Lopez since I moved to the area about a year ago. The food is always good, the portions are generous, and the prices are a great bargain.

Worst

After hearing all the hype about this "different" kind of Mexican restaurant, we tried Lopez. We won't be going back. Although the Margaritas were good, the snacks and food were n...

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/17/2013

Been going to Lopez's since 1979 when I moved to Sugar Land, and it was the closest restaurant to First Colony. The Lopez family and loyal employees have grown from a ""hole-in-the-wall"" to their current mamoth location. They grew due to their great Tex-Mex and genuine friendly service. Try it you won't be dissappointed, but don't come looking for ""trendy or fancy"" neuvo food, it's the real thing. more

Good Tex-Mex, good service 11/12/2010

We have dined at Lopez since it was in a tiny strip center space. They have long since moved into their own building a block away. I know of one Tex-Mex place where the food is a little better, but Lopez has more affordable prices and very good service. The owner is always there overseeing the staff and greeting customers. My favorite is the Green Chicken Enchilada topped with two shrimp. more

Wonderful need to try 3/24/2010

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. we had a group of 13 and we were very well taken care never had to wait on a drink to be refilled and the food was wonderful. I would recommend the pollo qui- qui riu qui to anyone trying this restaurant wonderful pod and service must try. if possible would rate higher than 5 stars. more

Not too bad... 9/25/2009

There's a reason I'm giving this place a 3 even though I eat here quite often. I usually travel to a lot of different restaurants around the Houston area and I've come across many that are absolutely fantastic. Pros: Consistancy, Tacos Rancheros Cons: Long Wait, Loud more

I dont understand why? 6/26/2009

We have friends and neighbors that love this Lopez, but my family does not understand it. Pros: Fast service, easy parking, rice and salsa were excellent Cons: Childrens meals were low budget and Entre's were average more

My newest favorite Mexican Joint!! 11/1/2008

This is my first messsage because I had my first trip last Saturday. It is suuuuuch a pleasure. The chips were thin and crispy, the salsa perfectly seasoned and fresh, the margaritas, well, let's just say IM OBSESSED! The food just gets better from there!!! I made my second trip on monday....I am doing my best to get back asap! The waitstaff is family from the second you come in the door. I have only one realy complaint....they are NOT open on Sunday...ugh that is one of my most favorite days to hang out, watch a game, and linger over a coool and lovely margarita! I have told SOOO many people! Way to go Lopez, but could you please get one closer to Memorial or Westheimer even?? I'll say my prayers! =] Pros: name something...its amazing an d wonderful Cons: um not open on sundays and not close to where i live more

I love this place!!!! 7/31/2008

My old boss Jay brought me here 5 years ago and I bring everyone I know here and start their trend. The service is AWESOME! The food is GREAT! The atomosphere is WONDERFUL! I order the beef enchilada dinner everytime it is my favorite meal. The margaritas are delicious! You have to check out this family dining restaurant!!! more

Houston's Best Kept Secret! 6/26/2008

I agree with Tripadvisor; best Mexican food in the city of Houston; fresh, delicious, perfectly seasoned, and the staff is more than accommodating. If you folks over on the other side of town would like a taste of something apart from Pappasitos and the like, I highly recommend you make a trip to Lopez - now THIS is what I'm talkin' about - genuine tex-mex, the REAL DEAL. You'll not regret the trip to the southwest part of town for this tasty Mexican cuisine! Enjoy:) more

Best Mexican 8/16/2007

I can't believe I haven't been here before. I've eaten at Lopez twice now in 2 weeks. Just moved into the area so I'm not familiar with the history. Great food and service and the portions are huge. The margaritas are small but good. I'll definetly keep going back. Pros: Immediate seating, excellent food Cons: small margaritas, noisy but festive more

Feels Like Home 3/5/2007

I have never written a review about anything, anywhere. I am willing to make an exception for Lopez! I have been eating at Lopez since the ""cave dwelling"" days of the old place a block further down Wilcrest (since 1995 to be exact). Lopez has something that some reviewers have missed, and that's a distinct personality. If you have been to Lopez three or four times, the people there know you. It is a family business and it won't take long for you to feel like part of the family. Some people say the food was better before the move. I disagree. The food is still as wonderful as it ever was, but maybe there was something about waiting in line outside a restaurant, in a city with way too many restaurants, that just made the anticipation even greater back in those days. I have read a few reviews that mention that they cannot understand people's loyalty to this place. Here is what does it for me: every time I walk in, someone who knows me shakes my hand, and every time I think to myself ""maybe I'll have another beer"", someone I know asks me if I need another one. The food is wonderful, but the service is absolutely unparalleled. Oh, and here is my food review: Try the carne guisada! Pros: Service, Atmosphere, Mr. Lopez Cons: Not the best flour tortillas... more

Best queso anywhere 8/3/2006

If you like queso, salsa, and enchiladas check out Lopez. My family has been going since the doors opened about 30 years ago. Mr. Lopez, Jonathan Lopez, Santiago, and the rest of the crew will take care of you as if you're family. The queso and service are unmatched. Pros: queso/service are the best more

Heart and Magic 7/13/2006

I was reading the Best of City Search for the Best Mexican Restaurant in Houston the other day and I was surprised to see Lopez Mexican Restaurant on Wilcrest listed at number one. I had expected to see Picos or Lupe Tortillas or even Chachos at the top. As a resident of Sugar Land, I have driven by this restaurant many many times with never the intention to check it out. Pros: Value, Quality, Food more

Overrated but very popular 7/12/2006

If I live to be 100, I will never understand this restaurant's cult-like popularity. People in Southwest Houston/Sugarland all seem to love the place, but I've eaten there several times with friends and co-workers and I just don't get it. The food was inconsistently prepared from visit to visit; I suppose that means different people were in the kitchen those days, but if I have a dish I like, I want to be able to reliably have it anytime I go to a restaurant. Pros: Inexpensive, lots of parking, friendly service Cons: Food is average at best, inconsistently prepared more

GREAT PLACE, THE REVIEWS ARE ALL TRUE! 7/6/2006

From the get go I knew this place was going to be great from all the reviews I have read about the great Lopez Mexican Restaurant. The reviews all were true. The food is great, the menu is great, and the service is great. The only thing I would comment on is that Lopez has become bigger, wealthier and more refined. So with all that in mind, go in big groups or your seated in the corner and also dress conservative. Other than dressing a little nicer than a tshirt your trip should be well worth it. Pros: The great place, the service, I guess dressing a little more than casual Cons: Maybe the tres leches...ask for it without cherries more

Out of this world 2/18/2006

This has become an all time favorite for me. I have verbally recommended it to everyone I know. If you love Mexican food you have to try this place. No matter how far you have to drive do it because it is well worth it. The service was outstanding, there was no wait and the hostesses were very pleasant. Our drinks were always filled the food was hot and the salsa was right on the money. They even have a wonderful childrens menu and I don't have children. Take my advice and try it out today! Pros: food, service, price more

User review by mbenefield 1/31/2006

I have been comming to Lopez for just about a year now. At first I was frustrated with myself that I had not heard about this place earlier. Forget Gringo's, Chachos, and even Pico Pico's. This place tops them all. The service is the key, all of the waiters do an excellent job keeping your tea full and you happy. The food is the best in the city, and the queso is to die for.. Forget the rest and try the best. more

20 years eating here. 6/30/2005

Have been coming to Lopez restaraunt for the 20 years I have lived in Houston, have never had 1 bad meal, or bad service. All the wait staff is friendly and ready to help you in any way. Cannot get better food or service for the price. I'll be coming here for another 20 years and more. more

Great Mexican Food & Excellent Service 1/9/2005

I have been going to Lopez for less than a yr now. I always receive a great meal that fills me up, exceptional cust. service. , and prompt seating. The last time that I went, it was busy and still was seated w/in 10 minutes. Cheap prices for the taste & Quantity of food. 2 to 3 dollars cheaper than the Mexican restaurants in my residential area. Wish they were open on Sundays. Pros: Great Food, Wnderful Cust. Srvice, Parking more

THE SALSA 7/18/2004

The salsa at this restaurant is exceptional this place has it all, the best cheese enchiladas and the BEST SALSA anywhere. TRY THIS place Pros: salsa, food, service more
