You haven't had Pastrami until you've had it here. Nowhere on planet earth is there Pastrami that compares. The Corned Beef ain't bad either. Potat...

Katz's....that's all! 3/31/2008

I had a corned beef sandwich on rye here, and I can honestly say that it's one of the most satifsying sandwiches I've ever had. The pickles are good, too. I do, however, recommend getting something to drink with your sandwich- while delicious, it will be salty and dry. I learned the hard way. Also do keep in mind that it's probably also going to be one of the most expensive sandwiches you'll ever eat. \r If you're lucky like I was, you'll also get to sit at the table where Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan sat for the famous ""I'll have what she's having!"" scene from When Harry Met Sally. It's pretty cool! Pros: big, yummy sandwiches, famous and fun Cons: expensive, crowded more

As a big meat eater I must recommend the hot Pastrami... quick and to the point.\r I would not trade this sandwich with anything else they serve there... more

Best pastrami I have ever had 3/14/2008

I have been to Katz several times. I LOVE their pastrami sandwich on rye. It's thick cut and juicy, but not greasy at all. I have been to other restaurants where the pastrami would definitely give you a heart burn afterwards. But Katz's is just flavorful and juicy with just the right amount of fat. I have been to carnigie deli as well, and they are definitely not as good as Katz's. Pros: food, casual environment Cons: crowded, a bit expensive for sandwiches more

Best Pastrami I Have Ever Had, Great Experience 2/13/2008

I've been to Katz's Deli many times since I've lived in NYC... most of the time it is late on Friday/Saturday nights after I get tired of the bar/lounge scene down in the LES. Katz's doesn't need another positive review -- it's legendary -- but I still feel compelled to give this place my blessing on Citysearch. If you're hesitant that it's the best kosher deli, just stop in and try a pastrami sandwich. They'll usually give you a sample piece while they make your sandwich, and it's that first bite that always puts a smile on my face and makes me remember why Katz's is so good. I always keep my order simple: pastrami on rye with mustard. Sometimes I'll go with potato salad or a knish on the side, because you can't go wrong with either of those, and occasionally I'll have one of their delicious hot dogs as a prelude to my pastrami. Eat in or take out... you just can't go wrong at Katz's. Pros: Best Pastrami, Great Experience, Open Late Cons: Hectic, Not Open 24/7 more

Good but expensive 1/15/2008

I mostly go for a hot dog or turkey sandwich, but it is really too expensive. Avoid getting an eggcream. I made someone get eggcream that never had one before and was embarrassed. There was more chocolate syrup in it than there was seltzer...gross. Pros: only turkey I'll eat. Cons: service is kaos. too expensive. more

I come for the hot dogs and knishes! 12/4/2007

I'm not a pastrami/corned beef fan so when I got to Katz's, it's for the best hot dogs (mustard, saurkraut) in the city, snappy and fresh, and knishes, kasha-filled and hot and crispy, amazingly comforting with brown mustard. The no-frills matzo ball soup is also very good, and never forget to order a side of half-sour pickles!!! They also have diet cream soda, which is very important. And whatever you do, DON'T LOSE YOUR TICKET!!! Pros: Great hot dogs and knishes Cons: multiple counters and confusion more

I'll have what she's having 11/17/2007

That famous line from the film ""When Harry Met Sally"" was said at Katz's Deli. I was able to finally visit this legendary deli earlier this year and ordered their famous pastrami sandwich. I'll be honest, the sandwich was greasy, heavy, and one of the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever had! There are a lot of deli's in NYC to try but if you only have a few days in the city, make sure you visit Katz's. Pros: The pastrami and corned beef Cons: I don't live in NYC so I can't go there as much as I'd like to more

Never again 10/13/2007

Last night me and my partner REALLY wanted a GOOD pastrami and corned beff sandwich.\r We have been a few times to Carnegie Deli and absolutely LOVED it.\r \r So for a change we went to Katz's with grfeat expectations, as this is supposedly ""the best"" in town.\r \r How disappointing!!\r \r Dry, salty and flavourless meat, half the size of Carnegie's sandwiches and definitely not even close to a hundredth of Carnegie's juicy taste!\r \r I am really surprised to see here those great reviews and all those pictures of famous people hanging in the big hall of the restaurant...\r Where is the good tooth of Newyorkers???\r \r Never again. more

Best Pastrami Sandwich ever! 10/7/2007

Arrived at around 11, just before the lunchtime rush. Katz's does have an unusual way of payment tho (bit like having dim sum when its busy in China Town). They give you a ticket on entry and the counter staff will mark the ticket with what you order and then you pay at a booth by the door when you leave.\r \r Alot of ppl complain about the decor and the ambience but I loved it, everything from the sawdust in the bathroom to the slightly rundown feeling of the place and the neighbourhood around it. Alot of cops and locals there which is always a good sign.\r \r The guys at the counter cut the pastrami infront of you, even tho we didnt tip he gave us the juiciest and leanest pastrami I've ever had (I don't like fat on my meat). I've been having dreams about the Ruben Sandwich, its that good!!! It was big so I shared the sandwich and a bowl of Matzoh Ball Soup between two. The soup was nice but wasn't too convinced by the Matzoh ball. \r \r I can't wait to go back NYC cus I'll definitely be coming to Katz's Deli again Pros: Pastrami is really tasty!!! Cons: Very Pricey more

  • Katz's Deli is frequented by regulars who've been coming for decades, as well as tourists and neighborhood newbies; occasionally, you might catch a glimpse of a celebrity. Since its establishment in the 1880s, the deli has changed very little in appearance, retaining a grungy sheen. Grab a ticket on the way in for counter service, or seat yourself at a table to be waited on. Katz's still makes about 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs a week--the old-fashioned way, on the premises--and it shows in the massive portions the deli serves. Excellent pastrami is a big draw, as is the deli's Reuben sandwich.
