You haven't had Pastrami until you've had it here. Nowhere on planet earth is there Pastrami that compares. The Corned Beef ain't bad either. Potat...

Worst

Katzs being a landmark in NYC, it fell short of my expectations. This dirty place is always packed (tourist attraction?) and though the pastramy sandwich was good, I found it was ...

Katz's Deli: Nostaligic NO! Decrepit YES! 5/21/2009

My first trip to NY and to this famous institution. Katz's was crowded and loud with locals having a good time. It took me a while to figure out the the waiter vs. self-order system, but this was understandable. The tables and chairs are old and in need of repair, not nostalgic. Tables are very narrow forcing patrons to sit with their chairs away from the table into the back of the adjacent table forcing persons to always have to be moving. Not nice. My matzoh ball soup was very mediocre. The broth tasted more like carrots with no chicken taste and was room temp. The matzoh ball was average in taste and not warm inside the center. The egg creme (my first in NY) was served in a paper cup with a plastic lid (again, not the nostalgic soda glass with a frothy layer I was expecting). The taste was ordinary and I make better ones at home. Now for the corned beef sandwich. The rye bread had no caraway seeds, a soft crust like white bread and was machine sliced thin like diet slices. Lousy bread. The corned beef was again ordinary, not salty and not flavorful. In my opinion, if you are a visitor, look elsewhere for deli. If you are a local, then I say to New Yorkers: Wake Up! This deli is lousy. Demand more. Bread should have caraway seeds, be warm, hand sliced, a little thick with a crunchy crust. Corned beef should be moist and a little salty and flavorful. Matzoh ball soup should be piping hot, a great chicken broth and the matzoh ball should be flavorful and hot. An egg cream should be in a nice soda glass for over $4. Oh yes, clean this place up, it looks dirty and old. Pros: Not really any. Pickles were okay Cons: See the details more

Best Delicatessen in the World 4/14/2009

Katz's has got to be the very best delicatessen in the world. The pastrami is absolutely phenomenal. I've never had better. The hot dogs are absolutely amazing, as is the kielbasa, knishes and sour pickles. The food is top notch ... out of this world. The staff knows their stuff and the owners are professional and on the ball. Katz's is old New York at it's authentic and contemporary best. There's simply none better. Pros: Pastrami, Hot Dogs, Kielbasa, Knishes ... you name it Cons: None to speak of more

Want abuse and overpriced food? Eat here! 4/9/2009

Possibly the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant/deli/diner - anywhere! A recent Friday afternoon visit turned into a bad joke as two friends and I realized we had been had! Teenage/20-something boys with bad attitudes (except when it came to poon-pursuing) shouted at us, telling us what line to get in and where to go and who to see and where to pay. My bill came to $25 for a turkey sandwich (no lettuce, no tomato, $15), an order of limp fries ($5), and a Snapple drink. My friend was charged $5 for an order of soupy warm cole slaw. Buyer beware! Even the bathrooms were creepy. Save your money and go elsewhere. A bad experience all around. Pros: T-shirts Cons: Food, service, cleanliness, etc. more

If you're in hard times like the rest of the country don't go here. 3/9/2009

One sandwich cost 15 bucks... definately not worth it. Long lines, and military rules in a deli. If thats what you want have fun more

overpriced and pushy 3/2/2009

after seeing the famous deli online and on tv i had to go. wslking in, i was immediately informed that i would be charged fifty bucks if i did not return my ticket. then i was hearded to the counter to witness fifteen and twenty dollar sandwiches that do not live up to their collosal reputation. the people were rude and i will never step foot in this ""landmark"" again. more

Dirty, Gross, and NOT WORTH THE PRICE! 2/9/2009

HORRIBLE! I saw this place on a recent taping of Man vs Food on the travel channel. Now, Im a BIG fan of the Carnegie deli...but i must admit that the pastrami sandwich looked great on TV, so i decided to give Katz Deli a try. \r \r Upon entering the place, you're handed 2 tickets...the (rude) guy tells you to hold onto them & pay when you leave. Then, you are bombarded with ""cutter"" lines and have to stand in line to get your order. Now, i get that this is a cafeteria type of atmosphere...but i was beginning to feel like a cow waiting in line for the slaughterhouse! Seeing that there were very few tables available, i left my boyfriend in line and decided to grab a table and wait. WELL, from what i saw...i wasnt happy. The floors were disgusting...the staff was rude, and the area where you could be served by a waitress had people waiting like vultures for the next available table! 25 minutes later...my BF brings over 1 Matzo ball soup THAT WAS COLD, 1 SOGGY pastrami sandwich...a beer and a sprite. I was not impressed at all. It felt really gross eating there and i couldnt wait to get out! Being that we had 2 tickets, we thought we could keep one as a memento...we're corny like that. $30 later (YES, THAT MUCH!!!!) we go to pay the bill and ask if we could keep the other ticket. The guy says NO. NO SOUVENIRS. IT's a $50 fine if you lose the ticket!"" I giggle and say ""You're joking!?"" Ughhhh NO! THE NERVE!!!! these little carnival raffle tickets value at $50?! WHO do they think they are?! Do yourself a Favor, if you want good Classic eats...go to Carnegie.I'll NEVER go back to Katz! more

As NY as Pastrami on Rye 1/16/2009

The pastrami sandwich is pretty comparable to those at other delis, but I had a better experience at Katz compared to my experiences at other places. Even though the price of a sandwich may seem steep, they stack the sandwich with tons of meat, so it works as 2 meals for me. more

Katz's Deli - Worst Service in NYC 12/28/2008

I took my family here for the real deli experience, and I'll never go back, the service is deplorable, the staff is rude, and the prices are ridiculous. The owner should really get a grip and run this place right. ATMOSPHERE has nothing to do with poor quality and filth. This was really a disappointment. I've been in the service industry for years and this place stinks. Cons: Does the wait staff actually work for tips? I don't think so. more

SO GOOD 11/6/2008

I love to eat at Katz's. You do whatever you damn well please. 3 second wait for a table, plus you have the option of getting your food yourself or have the food brought to you (the service is great) Although the classics, like the cheeseburgers are delicious, I highly recommend ANYTHING WITH PASTRAMI. Usually alot of people, but a mixed crowd and you can tell they have alot of regulars that come in. In two words, CHEAP and DELICIOUS. more

Editorial
  • Katz's Deli is frequented by regulars who've been coming for decades, as well as tourists and neighborhood newbies; occasionally, you might catch a glimpse of a celebrity. Since its establishment in the 1880s, the deli has changed very little in appearance, retaining a grungy sheen. Grab a ticket on the way in for counter service, or seat yourself at a table to be waited on. Katz's still makes about 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs a week--the old-fashioned way, on the premises--and it shows in the massive portions the deli serves. Excellent pastrami is a big draw, as is the deli's Reuben sandwich.
