Katzs being a landmark in NYC, it fell short of my expectations. This dirty place is always packed (tourist attraction?) and though the pastramy sandwich was good, I found it was ...

Lean pastrami Reuben is to die for! 2/7/2011

We finally made it to Katz's Deli this year, after previously trying both Stage Deli and Carnegie Deli. After biting into our sandwich, it was Katz's for the win. We ordered a lean pastrami Reuben, Matzo ball soup and half-sour pickles. The taste of pastrami was fantastic and I couldn't wait for the sandwich to be built. Once we gathered our order we sat at a table several down from the one made famous in When Harry Met Sally and chowed down. The Reuben was a.ma.zing. Truly spectacular...so much better than both Stage and Carnegie that it wasn't even like comparing apples to apples. Carnegie, however, won on the Matzo ball soup. The soup at Katz's was missing the intense chicken flavor of Carnegie, so Carnegie won the soup round. To give you a better idea, we were plotting how to get more Reubens delivered from Katz's to Seattle as we're only in NYC about once a year. We already miss that darn sandwich. more

I don't care which movie, this place sucks 12/30/2010

We went there based on the TV show Man vs Food or something like that. We were disappointed. It was over priced even for NYC. The thugs hired to make sure you pay are nothing but bullies. One of the thugs puts his arms across the door while you are paying. What's up with that? The overpriced pastrami on rye was small compared to other deli around the corner. The food was average. this place is running on nothing but the movie and TV show and paid raters. You can skip this place. The attitude needs to put them out of business. If you want to be abused, be a customer. If you want real food and great service, eat from a street vendor! If the owner or one of the thugs there sees this, you are neither helping military nor any customers. They claim they are helping the military personnel. I would like to know how? oh yea, they want you to buy something and send it to your loved ones.. All of the people who write great reviews here are mostly paid people. If they are not paid, they are just doing it to fool you. Stay away from here more

Expensive but great 12/22/2010

This place is pricy. If youre craving some good roast beef or pastrami and are willing to spend minimum 15$ then this is the place to go. The pickles are great too. more

Great Knishes 11/24/2010

Everyone talks about the pastrami and roast beef, im here to talk about the knishes. They are great, over stuffed with delicios mashed chunky potatoes, and go great with the spicy mustard. This place is a little pricy, but it is such a historical monument and just a great atmosphere in NYC. more

Like a sad and depressing deli at a truck stop 8/19/2010

Yes, 15-20 years ago I'm sure this place was still holding onto the fact that it was a NYC institution, with decades of history and being proud. And surely the Long Islanders and B&Ts huddle in here like they do to Little Italy, even though Little Italy is almost fully Chinese. The ambiance, yes it's cool and I wish more places like this still survive (my lament over Chumley's goes here). I rated decor as average because it's a great place to see, but it's still rather grungy and dirty. If you think it's supposed to be grungy and dirty, then you've seen too many movies from the 70s and it is distorting your memories. Your grandfather would never walk into that place when he was younger if it looked like it does today. But the food? Completely gross. Sad. Insulting. They have some salvation in their pastrami, and if you notice how much it's mentioned in every single discussion about Katz's, you realize it's the only thing worth mentioning. And that means mentioning, not going out of your way for. The the corned beef is a slab of unsalted beef fat. Their sides are mounds of grease. They should be ashamed that this is how they treat traditional Jewish food. more

This is New York 8/17/2010

I've been to Katz many times and the food is the best. The atmosphere is perfect. For those reviewers that think it's confusing or ""dirty"" or crowded just don't get it. Katz Deli is a true New York staple. My mouth is watering thinking about a Pastrami on Rye at Katz. Corned Beef, Toungue...it's all good. more

Less than I expected 7/6/2010

With Katz being as famed as it is, I had to order its signature dish, pastrami on rye, and boy was that a let down! For one, it was most definitely not a pound of pastrami, and secondly, I found the accompanying pickles more of a treat (and that's really saying something). While the pastrami itself wasn't bad, I've had far better pastrami in my life, and with a $15 price tag, the sandwich was not worth it by itself. I only paid that much because it was Katz, which is probably part of the problem - unfortunately, since Katz is so well known, it can charge ridiculous prices and deliver food that's below the belt. I don't think I'll be coming here again. The place has an old NYC charm, and that's its only redeeming feature. more

The rep is true 6/27/2010

Even though they violate my $10 sandwich rule, I will gladly pay the $14 for a Pastrami lean, as it is freaking delicious! Get a side of coleslaw and fries. Bomb Meal! Pros: Fun atmosphere with awesome sandwiches Cons: Kinda expensive and hard to figure out for a first timer more

I ordered blintzes, and waited quite a while... and they were stone cold when they arrived at the table (cold blintzes taste like glue) Most expensive inedible meal I've had in NYC more

  • Katz's Deli is frequented by regulars who've been coming for decades, as well as tourists and neighborhood newbies; occasionally, you might catch a glimpse of a celebrity. Since its establishment in the 1880s, the deli has changed very little in appearance, retaining a grungy sheen. Grab a ticket on the way in for counter service, or seat yourself at a table to be waited on. Katz's still makes about 5,000 pounds of corned beef, 2,000 pounds of salami and 12,000 hot dogs a week--the old-fashioned way, on the premises--and it shows in the massive portions the deli serves. Excellent pastrami is a big draw, as is the deli's Reuben sandwich.
