Editorial review from Citysearch 7/8/2013

Each time I dine here I am amazed at the very high caliber of the creative fusion of tasty ingredients. The menu always changes but I opt for the fish dishes which are most delicious I've ever had anywhere--very fresh tasting, moist inside and slightly crunching outside make for a perfect combination of tastes and textures. The appetizers, side dishes and desserts--all top-notch every time more

DELICIOUS AND FRIENDLY 12/12/2008

Whenever I've got guests in town I take them to The House and we all leave feeling well fed and happy with the relatively low cost. Great fish dishes with lots of imaginative pairings, wonderful salads, to-die-for-sandwiches at lunch, and satisfying desserts. The only drawbacks are: too small a space for the number of guests (but everyone's so happy that it still a good experience) and the meal is kind of rushed -- they actually get 4-5 seatings for dinner each night! But The House is still one of my favorite restaurants in The City. Cab-it as the North Beach parking is as bad as it gets. Also, be prepared for encounters with drunks spilling out onto the street from the next-door historic bar. Pros: Great food. Sufficient wine list. Well designed and executed dishes. Cons: As you can imagine, parking is a nightmare. more

Insanely popular, don't go without a reservation 10/21/2008

Ask the server what they recommend and just go with that, they always know what the best dishes are that day. it's a small restaurant but service is professional and quick. just don't show up without a res you have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in. more

best asian inspired experience ever off City Search restaurant suggestions! 8/9/2008

We dined here while traveling with friends from Europe after reading reviews & were absolutely thrilled with the experience!! Every single thing we had was perfectly prepared & delicious (and we're picky). The garlic noodles were to die for, all the fish dishes were lovely, tasty & inspired, and the desserts were crazy great (the passionfruit affair was divine.) Highly recommend - even our waitperson was lovely, not in-our-face, and her recommendations were all outstanding. Ok, guess you can tell, we think this place is a keeper! It is very small - which we didn't mind, & we came by cab, so don't know about neighborhood or parking. Prices were reasonable & in line with the quality. Enjoy! Pros: Everything we had was perfect & we're picky! Cons: none-maybe the size for some parties would be tight more

Wonderful food and presentation 1/21/2008

Everything was very well done there. From the service, to the presentation to the intimate yet lively atmosphere, to of course the food. They had a great assortment of food to choose from. Reasonably large portions with great flavors in every bite. One can go from sweetness to gingery spiciness in a single bite. I tried the bass, the crab cakes, the salmon roll ~ each one was just divine. The service was very friendly and unpretensious. The restarant was very small so you definitely need to make reservations in advance. You can bring your own bottle of wine too but they have a long list to choose from. I would definitely go back when I'm in SF. Pros: Everything more

This is my all time FAVORITE restaurant. 10/31/2007

This is my all time FAVORITE restaurant. I've never had a dish I didn't like here. My friend took me here for the first time 9 years ago and I haven't stop praising about it since. Their pork chop with a pomergranite sauce is mouth watering. I strongly suggest this dish. Their Prawns and mushroom rice is also to die for. My biggest problem with this restaurant is deciding what to order because I love it so much. Appetizers: The tuna tartare and salmon rolls are really good. Dessert: Blueberry bread pudding.... mmmm.... Pros: The Food. YUMMY! Cons: If you bring a date, s/he will want to come back so be prepared. more

Consistently great food 6/18/2007

Rarely do I go to a restaurant where each visit tops the last, but this is the case with this one. I love trying new dishes here and make it a point to only go with people who share! Unfortunately I agree that the service is not quite of the same caliber as the food. They just seem overly busy for some reason. I also was pretty disgusted by the restroom on my last visit. more

Jewel of North Beach 4/8/2007

The House is the jewel of North Beach. Their inventive menu has a great mix and you won't be disappointed. Flavors are well balanced and the food is cooked to perfection. The House specials are delicious, but if you would prefer to order off of the menu, the sea bass is a must try! Their staff is knowledgable and will offer a great dining experience. more

Best Pan-Asian Food in San Francisco 2/21/2007

Reservation is key!! Our hotel got us a reservation a few hours before we head to the restaurant. When we got there, the place was so small but very quaint. There was a long line of about 15 people ahead of us. Pros: Great Food, Prompt Service, Affordable Cons: Small Restaurant, Must have reservation more

Excellent Fusion 2/18/2007

My husband and I were in San Fran for a couple of weeks, and this was one of the best meals we had, hands down, and it was the least expensive! The staff were attentive and kind, and the food was outstanding. We're in town a couple of times a year. Can't believe it took us this long to find this hidden gem. more

Delcious Food, Chill atmosphere and Great Service 1/25/2007

I ate at The House last night with a friend who was visiting from out of town. Everything was wonderful! We ordered the white shrimp and chive dumplings as a starter which was good. The waiter told us about the entree specials, one which was a dish with Kobe beef. I was not interested in the veggies and rice that accompanied it, so the waiter suggested that I order the warm wasabi house noodles dish and that he would switch out the angus flat iron for the kobe. Well, the dish was delicious and I was so pleased that the waiter had made this suggestion. We also got the seabass which was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. For dessert we got the special which was a warmed peach and cherry cobbler with vanilla ice cream... i left not a morsel in the bowl. I look forward to going back to the House and trying some more of their delightful dishes. Pros: Nice and helpful waiter, good menu more

Some of the worst service I've ever experienced... 12/24/2006

After reading the glowing reviews of this restaurant, my cousin and I decided to try it out. From the moment we walked in the door, the experience was downright terrible. The host was rude and unpleasant, despite discovering that the hostess the previous night had written down our reservation incorrectly and we were left without a decent table. After being seated directly in front of the swinging doors to the kitchen, we had to wait almost 20 minutes to have anyone come over to greet us, ask for our drink orders, or even acknowledge that we were there. When the waitress finally did appear, she was harried and patronizing. Completely inexcusable. The crowning moment came when we were waiting for our entrees and the kitchen doors swung open, revealing a worker inside who proceeded to make lewd gestures at us (a table of three women). Complaining to the manager only yielded a change of table, at which point we were ready to leave. The sad thing is that the food is actually quite good, tasty and reasonably priced. But the overall experience ruins it, and we will definitely never be going back. Pros: decent food Cons: everything else more

Yum! 11/10/2006

I've heard very good things about this place and it met all of my expectations. Their menu is very hard to choose from because everything sounds so good. They have great very unique specials and good wine list. The service was very friendly and although it's a tiny place it never feels cramped. I had the SeaBass which i heard was their house specialty, and it definitely was! Will be returning as soon as I can to try the rest of the tasty menu! Pros: Great Menu, wine list and service Cons: a little small, need to make reservations more

Incredible food, one of the best for Asian fusion 8/16/2006

By far my favorite restaurant in San Francisco and I'm a foodie so I try a lot of restaurants. Each time I visit The House, I fall in love with it again. I've gone in groups of 2 and 4, and key thing is to share so you can try all the different flavors. The chef's high point is that he creatively uses Asian sauces to highlight each dish so he'll use soy sauce or wasabi or plum sauce to give you a dish that you've never thought of before. Pros: Service, Food Cons: Difficult to find parking, Small space more

Expect great food, Don't even expect average service 8/9/2006

The first time I went to The House was when there was one on 9th Ave. in the city. I remembered the food was great and so was the service. Fast forward 3 years later, I wanted to try the original House for my birthday. Again the food is amazing, but the service was horrible. Initially we had a servicer that seem very nice, but they told the special way too fast for anyone to understand what they were. We told them that we werent ready yet, she said no problem and take your time. Not a minute later another server comes and practiclly demanded our order. I asked her to tell me what the specials were again and I didnt understand what she said for one of them. When I asked her to repeat, I got the most ugly look from her. The rest of the dinner was a big mix feeling for me. The food was out of this world with great fusion ideas, but the rest of the nights service continued to get worst. When we got our food, she threw down my bowl. I doubt any any of my friends will be going back. May be well go back in another few years, if they changed ther servers. Pros: The quality and quantity of the food Cons: Servers / Service more
