Best

Place is a great spot to bring a group to: no cover, friendly staff, good ratio of girls to guys, quick as hell bartenders and cheap drinks. Great place to start your night, or me...

Worst

This is so hyped on hear that I can't believe some of the reviews. Just moved into the area..trying all the different local places. This is not a place to go. Very pretentious-rud...

Nightclub requirements met! 9/30/2009

Place is a great spot to bring a group to: no cover, friendly staff, good ratio of girls to guys, quick as hell bartenders and cheap drinks. Great place to start your night, or meet up with a big group. Multiple bars, rooms, and deck kept it interesting. Could use a bathroom upgrade, some great house DJs and some visuals, but new girls and half price drinks trump snowboard videos, or psych visuals. Pros: Cool people (girls), spacious (outside deck), cheap drinks Cons: Music was too varied for my taste more

No Cover Charge 5/3/2009

This is a cool spot that does not have a super pretentious crowd. The prices per drink are nice and it is a pretty large bar. Check it out, you get more drink for your buck. Pros: No cover Charge, Reasonable Drink Prices Cons: Super Packed hard not to get stepped on more

Great place to be on a Thursday! 6/11/2008

Came here on a Thursday and it was fun!! Drinks are half off til midnight. Ordered 4 shots of Patron for $16. Thats fine by me! Mixed drinks were great too, and the bartender is gorgeous! The DJ played all the songs I wanted to dance to. There's an outside area in the back that I used mostly to cool off after dancing. Ran into alot of old friends and met some pretty chill people. Oh BTW no cover, IDs checked at door. There is coatcheck (i only mention this because prior to going i wasnt aware of this and froze a bit from the walk from my car to the bar). more

Always a Party 3/28/2008

The Holy Cow night club was the best club in S.F from 1987 with the best dance music and always a party, but the area has changed, yet the cow remains the same wood circular bar that Alexis Muir built, now run by Bill Herman to me the cow is still always a party. I am currently working on The South of Market Music project. If you have Photos , stories , memories of your Favorite club Band etc. Please send them my way. In 1987 I opened the Holy Cow night Club in San Francisco on Folsom street, which I Managed till 1994. David Singer designed the Holycow logo and originally the name of the club was to be called Sacred Cow as the previous club was called the Stud. Alexis Muir was the Owner of the Building, and we looked at each other one day and said "Holy Cow", then we put a large Cow in front of the building and placed a neon red halo above the cow.In 1987 I opened the Holy Cow night Club with Alex Muir in San Francisco on Folsom street, which I Managed till 1994. The Holy Cow remains with a plastic halo and zebra stripes. contact Gary Bossier Pros: still the Holy Cow since 1987 Cons: The Music -Remember the 80s and Dance! more

Best Thursday night in San Francisco by far 3/17/2007

Wow! It's weird to read some of these recent reviews. I go to other spots on Fridays & Saturdays, so I have no idea what it's like then, but from what I read in the last review this place must be pulling off a Jeckyll & Hyde for Thursday nights! I've been hooked on Thursdays there for the past few weeks. The place is crowded, but not too crowded (I've noticed the bouncers sometimes holding a line at the door until people leave, so they're definitely NOT all about packing as many in as possible), the drinks are CHEAP and good, the bartenders are good (even if they are slammed and can't serve you right away you'll at least get eye contact), and the music is GREAT! Like I can't describe how great I mean by great. There's a lot of typical standard radio and club hip hop played (expect to hear all of the same songs you hear at Suite 181 or any other average club), but a lot of unexpected music. The range is huge and it's obvious that the DJ is very good (the DJ scratches a lot), the music reminds me of Body English at the Hard Rock in Vegas. Actually, it's exactly that. I wouldn't be surprised if the DJ was brought in from Vegas the music is so Vegas. I also don't recall hearing any repeats there (though I'm usually pretty tipsy and can't be held accountable for details like that). The party really kicks off at around midnight (like it always does, everywhere), but I suggest trying to get there earlier than that because they have 2 for 1 drinks earlier in the night, I think until 11. Pros: The Music, UN-superficial party environment, cheap drinks Cons: it's a Vegas party except the decor, they should think about a remodel more

More Like, "Holy S%#$" 11/9/2006

If you like sweaty, gyrating, no money having dudes....by golly this is the place for you. I remember visitng this fine establishment when I was 21. It was fitting at the time. I'm now 28 and wonder why anyone (21 +) would want to frequent a place where your shoes get stepped on and you're sharing a bar with cavemen. The women are drunk and overweight, if thats your thing. Pros: There is a cow hanging outside. Cons: The cow might fall. more

Great Place 11/5/2006

We were there last Sat and the place was awesome. little too crowded, but I like it that way. Mixed crowd. Mostly young. Hip hop music. Strong drinks. The only bad thing: the bartender was this arrogant creazy girl who was weird and I saw her throwing someone's credit card at him! Appearantly she wasn't happy with the Tip? Pros: no cover charge Cons: bartender was rude more

Worst place ever! 10/26/2006

This place really stinks. It is a club full of desperate men. Everyone is sweaty and grungy. I would never take my girlfriends to this place. Pros: Good Music Cons: service, crowd, desperate men more

Chill spot, no cover 10/25/2006

This place a good spot to get drinks early on in your night. Bartenders are friendly and so are the bouncers. No cover charge!! Pros: No cover, drink specials Cons: Music can be whack, crowd can be old depending on night you go more

meet your next EX! 4/22/2006

hella chill place to mingle with others, very down to earth dont give a sh*t kind of people (everyday joe) that you as i did enjoy to be around, have had alot of fun in this venue, from meeting future Encounters to ending a solid night on the town! great place overall Pros: Top 40s music, singles, no cover Cons: crowded, bathrooms more

Worst Place for music in all of San Francisco 7/10/2005

I can't tell you enough why to avoid the Holy Cow. It is one disappointment after another. Once you get past the door staff you must deal with self absorbed bartenders and a DJ who does not know what the hell thier doing. Bartenders are so stuck on themselves it is not even fun. I guess it is a direct reflection upon the owner. Saturday night is by far the worst. The music is poorly mixed and repeats come often. Friday's are at least consistant. It is really too bad that The Holy Cow has been run by the barstaff cuz the owner is too busy looking in a mirror. Pros: Nothing Cons: It starts with the owner and gets worst. more

stay away at all costs 5/16/2005

this is probably worst cheese-ball bridge and tunnel bar in the world. Stay away more

Fun night, but there were misses... 2/25/2005

Last night I went to Holy Cow for the first time with my friend. We had fun in the first hour we were there, but soon the place became way too crowded to even walk or dance. The drinks were ok as well, a little expensive after Happy Hour though. Bartenders were attentive. They would make eye contact before they would serve you as they are assisting someone else to let you know that you're next. Music was good too, but a little outdated. People seemed really friendly and I would go again with more girlfriends. Bouncers were a little rude and slow and would take forever to look at my ID, even flipping it over to look at the back. I've never had that happen to me before. Pros: Atmosphere, Music, People Cons: Bouncers, Crowded, Bathrooms more

Depends on what you like 1/3/2005

I was impressed with the bouncers and coatcheck girl. My friend and I were total tourists and the bouncer and coatcheck girl took our coats from our booth so they wouldn't get stolen. The drinks were cheap and the music was fun. No cover and people were friendly. THen we had to make a call but couldn't find a phone so again the staff helped us out... definately the most laid back club we went to. Thanks to the great staff at HC! Pros: staff, music, drinks more

Don't waste your time 8/23/2004

I live and hang out in SF, and I have to say this is the last club I would end up at or take any visitors to - if you like places where they pack you in like sardines, don't mind guys groping you, and the company of the cheesiest suburbanites that hang out in The City, this is THE PLACE for you. If not, there are 900 other clubs in the city that are higher on the totem pole.. This club belongs in San Jose. more

Holy Moly! 8/19/2004

The Holy Cow is one of the few night spots in the SF that has a great combo of bar/club/dance atmosphere AND a cool, no-issues crowd. It has a warm atmosphere and raging party feel without being 'cheesy' or a meat market, as so many clubs become. I'm not sure how to explain why. It might be that the DJ mixes up the tunes really well. Some dance/house, some hip/hop, pop, then classic anthems, then back to dance. It keeps the flavor of the evening changing, fresher than if it's all one music style. This also attracts a diverse crowd. What I do know is that I've had numerous fun nights there and met some good people. They also make the best Long Island Ice Tea in town. Pros: easy parking, cheap drinks, fast bartenders more

I love the cow 5/1/2004

I've been partying at the holy cow now for about a year. In that time I've met a number of beautiful women that I've dated. I've had a million memorable nights, and I've used their venue to throw a couple of parties for friends of mine. Though the club isn't much on decor, the crowd's vibe is always cool... the women will actually talk and dance with you. After having worked in the nightclub industry for five years, I have to say that their staff is one of the most accomodating. Pros: cool staff and crowd, location, neighborhoo, hot chick bartenders Cons: , men's bathroom access more

Holy Cow 3/15/2004

I just have to say that the Holy Cow is MY FAVORITE PLACE TO PARTY IN SAN FRANCISCO!!! The crowd is always hella friendly and SOOOO much fun! The music is always bumpin' and I LOVE the fact that my girls and I can get up on the speakers and shake it without any drama! The outside patio is ADORABLE and the perfect place to take a quick breather after getting your sweat on, on the dance floor and maybe talk to a cutie. Tip for the Ladies: The bouncers are extremely helpful and will help get you through the crowd on the dance floor to the patio, since it is always OFF THE HOOK on the dance floor! Also if you arent ready to stop partying or you cant drive at 2am, 1015 Folsom is walking distance and open til like 6am. Have fun and be safe! Pros: No cover charge, Friendly Environment, Fun Music, 2 bars Cons: , I wish it was closer more

They Party Over here 3/13/2004

Most of the time I hit san francisco this is one of the places I come to..the dance floor is always packed and the djs a pretty cool...its not uncommon for a bartender to just give you a free drink...I remember at one point me and the bartender was actually taking shots together!!!! Lets be honest the females there are not the finest but they are approachable, every once in a while the stars come in....and when they do they come in packs... Pros: decent music, upbeat crowd, free admission Cons: , crowded, not good 4 romance more

Still fun after all these years 2/14/2004

This place has been around forever and still continues to be great. There are a lot of people especially on the dance floor. Be prepared for a lot of heat and people bumping in to you, but hey... that's what it's all about right?! Pros: lively, drinks, music more

  • In Short
Three sprawling rooms boast distinctive environments. In the main room, oversized vintage advertisements surround booths, a dance floor and massive bar that takes center stage. A side space offers a ski lodge-like chill area, complete with billiards and art-deco wall shapes that turn sci-fi under a blanket of back light; it's bridged by a mini-bar to a somewhat hidden lounge boasting grand banquettes, art-filled walls and life-sized diorama containing a knockoff of Michelangelo's "David."
