MEDIOCRE FOOD AT TWICE THE PRICE 11/5/2011

After reading reviews about their signature dish, I had the filet. I can get a better cut of filet at the local HEB. In my younger years, I cooked for a steak and lobster house in Beaumont, TX of all places. No comparison. Service was OK. Food was twice the price it should have been. Don't bother with a reservation.....you'll wait just as long as walk-ins. Oh, and the shrimp appetizer was a joke. Six small shrimp in a little pool of mediocre sauce on a huge plate for about 12 bucks. Terrible price and poor presentation. more

If you like fish, and have a bit of cash, you'll like this. 6/18/2011

Went there with a friend from work, wouldn't have gone there if I'd known it was an ""upper end dining place"", but really glad I did. My friend, who is from New England, and very very picky about her fish, wouldn't have gone if she'd known it was mostly fish food... but has now named it her favorite dining place in the area. It's a sod to find if you're using a TomTom: we ended up on the wrong road. Look it up on Google maps beforehand instead. I think we arrived at the perfect time, a little before sunset, so there was a 20 min wait for outside seats, 40 for inside, so book ahead if you can. The foyer's a little small, only seating maybe 10 people. You can order drinks while waiting, though. I think because of the time, they were at capacity, so service was sometimes a little slow - not agonizingly, just a minute or two wait for a refill, etc occasionally. There was live music outside: a good set, well known 60s-80s US blues I think, interspersed with a few words of banter amongst the players, quiet enough that you could still talk, though we picked a table a good distance away from the stage just in case. As she said: ""they had us at the bread"". The butter had garlic and spices in. Then there were stuffed mushrooms filled with crab, delicious, nom, and cheese, with a tangy sauce. Then I had ""FISH ST.MICHAEL: fish of the day, pan saut?ed in lemon pepper flour and butter, deglazed with white wine, and topped with saut?ed crawfish tails in Cajun herbs & spices over herb butter garlic cream sauce"" - boneless tilapia (an American freshwater cichlid), softer and less textured than I'm used to in fish like cod and such, but a great mild taste. The white sauce went *deliciously* with the crawfish tails. I chose mashed potatoes as the side, which had herbs in, mild enough to go well with the fish. The ""dirty rice"" (I tried some of my friend's) was spicier, which is why I didn't have it, but it turned out to but not be spicy enough to overwhelm the fish - think I might have that if there's a ""next time"", as the potato was maybe just a tiny bit too mild. Because, you know, it's mashed potato. Other than the cola (which was just diet coke: not a lot you can do with that to jazz it up), there wasn't a single ingredient that was even mediocre: even the mints with the check were delicious. I regret not having a drink worthy of the meal, now. We were also really lucky in getting a sunset to *die* for, no mosquitoes, and just a little warm humidity (but plenty of fans). Beware that mobile phones and free-roaming children are apparently discouraged inside: a couple of kids were roaming around outside just fine, though, and nobody told us off for checking our phones (oh my, how gauche!). Though some people had clearly dressed up for the place, I didn't feel uncomfortable in my shorts and sligtly-besplattered t-shirt. Wouldn't go there every week, but really glad we found it: great place for anyone wanting to splash out a little and have a really nice dining experience. Still, if I must find fault, then I have only one tiny, barely-significant grumble... I went there wanting to experience gumbo. There was no gumbo anywhere on the menu! :P more

Bad place for families with kids 9/10/2010

If you have a toddler who can walk, do NOT go to this restaurant. We used to like going to Gumbo's for dinner. However, when my toddler wanted to walk around after her meal while my hubby paid the bill, we were told by this lady (not dressed in black like the servers) who seemed to be overseeing the servers near the kitchen, not to walk the baby in the restaurant. I was holding my toddler's hand so she was not running around or wandering aimlessly alone. My toddler wasn't in anyone's way / the restaurant was not even full at that time. This restaurant is probably a good place for people willing to sit at their table, have their meals and leave immediately for the door, not good for families with kids who want to explore the place while their parents/adults finish their meals inside/pay the bill. more

Love Gumbo's in Round Rock 7/24/2009

I've been a happy frequent customer of Gumbo's in Round Rock for several years. The food and service have always been excellent. I often dine alone and the waitstaff takes the time to make me feel like I am a valued customer, even if I'm only one person. The owner, Shuler, always greets me whenever I visit and I enjoy taking visitors out to eat there. The patio and music outside is fun. Round Rock needs quality white table cloth restaurants and this is a good one. But really, though, people should dress appropriately to dine in a fine eating establishment. Shorts and flip flops are not welcome EVERYWHERE. Pros: Excellent food, service and ambience Cons: Inappropriately dressed guests more

Best Place in Round Rock and Austin 2/7/2009

This is in response to the gentleman who wrote the previous email. As it happens, I was a spectator waiting to be seated that evening when this pompous man and his group came into Gumbos. Their reservation was for 6:00 and at 6:03, all hell broke loose with this man and his family. When the owner came out to kindly and professionally approach the group, they said, and I quote,""I am counting up the comps you are going to give my group once we get sat. The owner offered drinks but they only wanted alcoholic drinks which is against the law to comp. If you ask me, they had partaken enough alcohol prior to arriving that evening. My wife and I frequently dine out and very frequent diners at Gumbos in Round Rock. In all of my experience, I have never experienced such a rude crass man such as this gentleman. As a matter of fact, I asked the owner if she knew his name and would she mind if I called him, she denied me the pleasure of giving me his name and his phone number so I could personally remark on his rude and holier than thou attitude that evening that he so diligently portrayed to all in the front foyer. I don't blame the management for making a professional decision that if they had a customer who was infuriated by the time 6:06 came around at not being seated, it was quite obvious that they could jump through hoops and not satisfy this group. It was not to the benefit of them nor their valued regular sane customers to perpetuate in attempting to satisfy this unreasonable group. Pros: Great Service Cons: Can be long waits but worth it in the end. more

Terrible Restaurant and Staff!! 2/4/2009

Do not waste your time or money on this restaurant!! The owners will tell you over the phone that they accept reservations but when you actually arrive they will tell you they do not accept reservations and make your party wait. This has happened to me 4 times! My party waited 30 minutes! The staff and owners were VERY RUDE and after confronting the owners on having to wait 30 minutes they asked us to leave the restaurant because they didn't feel they would be able to please my party. The food is also very over priced and not as tasty as one would imagine for having to spend so much money. Cons: Service is horrible. Very rude staff and owners!! more

Happy Hour here ROCKS!!! 11/19/2008

I discovered the happy hour one day while waiting on family for dinner (which is always a treat). They have very reasonably priced drinks and some of the most delicious appetizers I have ever tried. I took a very large group of co workers here and they all loved it! The service was great and so was the atmosphere, I can?t wait till the next happy hour here! more

BEST STEAK AND SEAFOOD RESTAURANT 9/13/2008

WOW seems like DineOutReguraly is too damn picky. He should maybe just stay in next time or just go to McDonald's. I bet I know why the manager wouldn't respond to his comments. I would say ""GET A LIFE! or GET OVER IT!"" I have always had a wonderful experience there! I LOVE IT! Great atmosphere, Great music on the patio, Great drinks, Awesome FOOD! LOVE IT! I would definitely recommend it! more

HH at Gumbos RR = Sad and frustrating experience 6/1/2008

First I would like to say that i have been a huge fan of Gumbos downtown for many years. Last Friday (5/30/08) we went attempted to have HH on the Gumbos patio in Round Rock. more

Our Experience - LONG WAIT, OK service (Heart just was not in it), Empty Drink Glasses, Good Food, WONDERFUL dessert 5/8/2008

Our party was 5 adults and a 7 month old (very well behaved little gentleman). Pros: Food, Dessert, Romantic Evening for SMALL parties, Patio Cons: Not good for Large Parties, 20% Gratutity added for parties of 5 or more, Server doesn't care if knows getting 20% anyway, Reservations on weekends only for Parties of 10 or more more

Fabulous food and lovely atmosphere 4/22/2008

We went to Gumbos for our anniversary dinner. It was lovely inside and outside, the service was impeccable and the food delicious. Each part of the dinner was good: bread and garlic butter, Greek salad, steak and seafood. We could not have asked for more, and it's the best food we've had since arriving in in the area in January. Pros: Lovely room, great service Cons: A loud customer, but what can you do? more

Great place to celebrate! 12/28/2007

My friends and I needed a place to have little Christmas cheer together. After looking at their website, we settled on Gumbo's in Round Rock. It was so outstanding! We had great food, drinks and the atmosphere was elegant, but also very fun! I can't wait to take my husband and go back (New Year's Eve maybe??). We had such a great experience, I felt I just had to let everyone know! Everyone should try Gumbo's! Pros: Perfect Food & Service Cons: none!! more

Who treats people like this? 11/2/2007

I have long been a regular of the Round Rock Gumbo's location, and have been going long enough that I even have a favorite server, Austin. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Ownership, treatment of guests and employees more

Almost perfect dinner experience 10/17/2006

The only room for improvement would be to allow for reservations. However, the wait that results from the lack of reservations is rewarded with consistently great food & service. It's my favorite place to take out-of-towners, but get there early (before 7:00 PM on most nights) if you don't want to wait for a table. Pros: Great food Cons: No reservations more

service was horrible, the food was amazing, the owner fixed it all 7/16/2006

I went here for my Mom's birthday not expecting very much. They have an amazing patio with a great band, their drinks aren't too bad either. We went inside and I was concerned with how kid friendly everything would be, I was right to be concerned they do not have a kids menu. The night only got worse, our waitress was horrible I have honestly never received worse service. Since it was my Mom's celebration nobody wanted to make a fuss we just left after eating and skipped the very tempting desserts. The food is incredible even if you dont like Cajun you will find something you love here. Their steak beats a TLC or ALC steak any day it almost melts in your mouth. I wrote an email to the address as listed on their site regarding the service and received a response the next day from the owner. He was deeply appolagetic regarding the service and compensated the gratuity charges. I cannot wait to go back! Pros: the food is incredible, i dont even like live music but the band was great too! Cons: no kids menu, not kid friendly more

Phenomenal steak and gumbo 7/14/2006

Went there for the first time this week. Excellent gumbo, house salad, and tenderloin st. george. Great ambiance. With every mouthful I turned to my mother-in-law and said ""best meal I've had in Austin since I moved here 18 months ago. Can't wait to go back!!! more

Great Experience!! 4/18/2006

Wonderful food...everyone needs to go out of thier way to try Gumbo's in Round Rock!!! We went on a weekend and enjoyed the live music on their patio. We love it that they have such a nice patio for us to wait on with great drinks and mouth-watering appetizers. The servers are very knowledgable and attentive. The steaks we had were amazing! We always heard it was great and expected it to be good, but we were blown away! Keep up the good cookin' in Round Rock! We'll be back! Pros: The steaks, appetizers, SERVICE (superb) more
