Hidden Gem of Downtown LA 1/14/2009

I discovered the GG about one year ago and its now my favorite all around bar. It may look a little shady from the outside but on the inside it's a whole different world. I love how everytime I've gone (mostly on Friday nights) there is never a line outside and they don't charge you cover. It does get pretty crowded, and it is a pretty small space but the eclectic crowd gives you a great opportunity to mingle and chat. Every person I've brought here loves it. The bartenders are great and friendly and drinks are reasonable (although they can be a little stingy on the liquor). The music they play is great and the overall ambience is wonderful. Such a change of pace from the usual Hollywood trendy scene. Pros: Great atmosphere, friendly bartenders, no outside lines Cons: Small space, can get really crowded, drinks aren't that strong more

offsite liquor and 80's arcade games? hell yes! 10/26/2007

another great establishment by Cedd Moses. Great crowd, vibe, and old school arcade games. It gets a bit crowded over the weekends, especially in the smoking patio outside."" more

BINGO NIGHT 6/26/2007

Not to be too judgemental, but the bar was full of elderly business people trying to reclaim their glory years. I thought they were checking AARPcards at the door. I thought the decor was great and the small outdoor patio was perfect for a quick spoke or some fresh air. They should also have music outside if possible. more

Trendy, but smelly. 6/23/2007

It was fairly full on the Friday I went. Bartenders were slow and selective, and the whole place smelled like upchuck. more

Great Downtown L.A. Bar 2/23/2007

I would rank this bar as one of the top in the downtown area based on the following characteristics: uniqueness (thumbs up), level of pretentiousness (non-existent), people (great mix of suits, casual, posh), vibe (relaxed), and best of all - drinks (very good). The only shortcoming of this bar is size...it could get REALLY busy on certain nights. If you're more of the pretentious type, stroll a few blocks to the 'way-past-its-prime' Standard a few blocks away. If you want character and something new, this is your place. Pros: vibe, decor, people Cons: a bit small... more

Good Scene, Low Key, DT Must 11/13/2006

Great Spot! Without the neon sign, it would be hard to find this narrow drinking spot. The GG is tucked away on 8th street, in a narrow space that makes its home in Downtown LA. The service is excellent, the bar tenders are on top of things, and the smoking patio is always a nice visit. No view or too much of a scene, just a nice place for local artists, musicians and good people to throw back a few and not have to worry about who's watching. more

Relaxed ""Neighborhood"" Spot 7/4/2006

A very relaxed, chill environment. Everytime I've been there it's been an eclectic mixture of suits, hipsters, college kids, etc. and everybody seems to fit in nicely. The service is good and the staff are laidback and friendly and definitely set the tone for the overall atmosphere of the place. Seems like there's a decent-sized crowd most weeknights but the best part is stepping in on a Saturday night and seeing the place packed. It tells me people are discovering downtown 'again'. If there was a real neighborhood around it, it would definitely fit within the category of neighborhood bar. Go with an open mind and you won't be disappointed. more

It's downtown baby! 6/20/2006

The place! Mix crowd, relaxed but funky! Cool ambiance, dark interiors, tables tops are videogames, full screen wall, and fancy chandeliers. The best part is the awesome INSIDE patio where you can smoke and look at downtown skylights, feel like youre in N.Y., San Francisco or Milan. Extra extended happy hours with I can get two of that drink make this bar one of those that you return to. Pros: Ambience, price, parking. more

Nice little spot... 10/7/2005

before when i first went here, there were no signs outside. i'm like, ""what the heck am i going to expect?"" what i found inside were some pretty hot ladies!! i went two weeks ago and they added a sign :( but all good. still, the space inside is long and there's a nice little open air patio for you smokers out there. there's plenty of seating but they're always taken. nice, chill vibe. my friends and i enjoyed it and would go again! Pros: parking, decor, vibe more

Cooler than the gopher from Caddyshack 9/28/2005

It's in the dregs of Downtown right off the 101, but this is a great jump-off spot. They have these great couches in their smoking alley and comfy seating inside, as well as a couple classic video games. Pros: Stylish, hidden Cons: Shady street parking, hidden more

Great find in downtown 3/13/2005

I was suprised to find such a great place in downtown. Really cool interior, great music and suprisingly normal people. Good beer selection. The area around it is a little sketchy - street parking is plentiful, but I felt nervous. A good place to go after a game at Staples. more

Golden Gopher downtown 1/3/2005

This bar has one of the nicest looking women's bathrooms you'll find! Service was great even though it was busy. An interesting mix of people. Overall, a great place to relax for a cocktail! Pros: close parking, great interior, good drinks more

diamond in the rough 11/19/2004

Great, neighborhood bar. Chic but not pretentious. Clientele widely vary from downtown yuppies to USC college students. The drinks are reasonably priced and the decor has a historic, NYC downtown twist. It's a little secret since the outside door is a simple, understated black door. Like anything good in LA, it's hidden. more

Hipster Moves Downtown 9/27/2004

A nice atmosphere, booze to go, cheaps well drinks and PBR. The reviews suggest that this is a hipster/suits/old timers bar, but weekend nights show that this is the new fav for USC undergrads. It is not the artist enclave that the Chintown bars have become. Pros: Cheap drinks, Nice set up, decent service more

The Diamond in the Rough 7/14/2004

Located in the desolate wilds of downtown, the Golden Gopher is the cool, relaxed bar this part of town needs. The place looks great for starters, and it's got a laid-back vibe, a great jukebox, friendly bartenders, and a mix of hipsters and old businessmen who knew the place before it was recently renovated by the owners of Liquid Kitty and Three Clubs. Go now, before it gets mobbed. Pros: laid-back, handsome, friendly Cons: , neighborhood more
