El Toro Mexican Restaurant

What a huge mistake - I ordered from El Toro again! I let my daughter talk me into placing a take out order at El Toro in Champlin. Once again, they said ""10 minutes."" Once again, they didn't even START to put the order together until we got there. We waited 15 minutes for ONE piece of tres leches cake. Got it home - and it was cheesecake. Unbelievable! Literally, they have NEVER gotten a take-out order correct! I don't know why I don't check the order on the counter before leaving becasue they have NEVER gotten it right! It really takes the joy out of bringing home a treat or dinner when it is grab bag surprise every time you go there. And to make matters worse, they STOPPED serving their fabulous tres leches cake and now serve a much cheaper (at the same price as before), much lower quality cake. It is one thing to put up with their crappy service for a good piece of cake - but I really would NOT encourage anyone to order from El Toro. I know that I won't ever again! Staff is as friendly as they come. They don't over ask questions which can be pesky at some restaurants. Food is very flavorful and drinks are cheap. I've eaten here about ten times and can't think of a single complaint. Pros: Great food, reasonably priced food and drinks more

decent/good food, clean atmosphere, quick/friendly service. It's good. I still like Pepitos MUCH better but this is very good if you're looking for something up this way. more

After all of the great recommendations, I finally went and tried it... and am sad to say... it's just OK. I was baffled, Mexican atmosphere, Mexican cooks and even Mexican mispronuciantions (just like my grandmother used to make) like ""shrimps""... but what I got was very Americanized. Extremely quick service - you get food like 5 minutes after you order - but if you're looking for flavor... keep looking. The best food there is the chips and salsa (which makes the main dish a bit of a let-down) and the Margarita's taste a bit watered-down. If you're looking for REAL Mexican food, try Boca Chica in St. Paul (yes, it's worth the drive). Pros: Quick service Cons: Not REAL Mexican food more

El Toro is my absolute favorite restaurant on this earth. I am almost addicted to the food. I CRAVE El Toro. Not to mention the $4.50 MONSTER tap beer. They also have AMAZING Margs!!! I'm a regular at El Toro and have a great time BSing with the wait staff. Not only are they humble nice people but they serve EXTREMELY fast and precise. Thursdays you might find yourself in the middle of a live mariachi band. Fantastic all around! If you enjoy authentic Mexican food PLEASE check it out!!! Pros: You name it! I love El Toro and try to have lunch here fairly often. Diners get fast, friendly service. Dinners are reasonably priced and almost too much to eat. The lunch's are SO quick and plenty to eat and around $5. I think the atmosphere is great and would possibly even make the trip from Minneapolis to Champlin sometime for dinner. This is truly a worthwhile establishment and second, in my mind, only to Pepitos. Oh yes, the chips are just mediocre but I love, LOVE the white sauce that comes with them. The salsa is good also.
