Good Food, Great Service 11/6/2010

The food was ethnic and some of it was great and some was good, though probably more because I was unaccustomed than because of actual quality. The server was very friendly and willing to make recommendations to us. A very good dining experience! more

Amazing Food, Great People 6/23/2010

I am from Romania, therefore I was very pleased to find out about Drakula. Their food is authentic and tastes great. The appetizer is similar to what you would find in Romania (yes, we have feta cheese, ham and salami there, should anyone be complaining about their serving these items). I am vegetarian, and they have a special menu for vegetarians with four entrees on it, offering more vegetarian options than many other restaurants. The food is absolutely delicious, and the owners are friendly. If you are looking to experience a bit of Romanian culture and cuisine, this is the place to go. Pros: delicious food, great price more

Dont' waste your time and money!! 11/16/2009

I went there the other day with some friends. All of us were very excited to try something new. So we went around dinner time, we were not greeted by the waitress. It looked like she was pissed that we even showed up although we were the only people in there. After we sat down and looked down at the menu we had some questions...of course because we have never had romanian food before. The waitress was extremely rude. To make a long story short, we had the worst customer service of our lives: the 3 people in there (the dad and the mother who I am assuming were the cooks along with their daughter who was the waitress) sat down across the table and were staring at us the whole time when were eating. The waitress got mad when we asked her for a spoon and almost threw the spoon at us. And when we left the restaurant she ran after us and started punching against the door which we thought was very strange. Maybe she was the Drakula :) who knows. Very scary! Their side dishes taste like canned food. All together bad experience, ok food and worst service. Pros: cheap Cons: rude, dirty, nasty food more

Wonderful awesome delicious! 10/16/2008

Wow, what a great place this is. It is one of my favorite places of all times. I had never had Romanian food before and now I am hooked! The food is prepared fresh and presented beautifully. I highly recommend Drakula. It has the feel of an old world family kitchen, I recommend trying the pollenta sausage bowl..it is to die for. Their appetizer plates are outstanding. more

Too bad.. 9/6/2008

It sounds like people used to really like this restaurant for great and unique food. It's been a few months since it had a review, and I really hope that they can regain the glory days. We went in and had a pretty good variety of what they offered. Nothing was particularly fun or good to be honest, I had the appetizer sampler for two, and while the amount of food was good, only one or two items really stood out, and that was because they weren't bad, as opposed to being good. It was supposed to contain a cheese item that has some sort of spread between the layers of cheese.. only it was some sort of kraft cheese slices as opposed to real cheese.. mmm.. nothing better than a big mouthful of kraft cheese, it was disappointing to say the least. The seafood spread was interesting (a part of the sampler), but had no real personality to speak of, it was very non offensive, there was something gray that kind of reminded me of hummus that you buy from the store, and the feta cheese was sliced off of blocks that you buy at the store.. such wow factor. I also had the tripe soup, which my wife found disgusting, while I enjoyed eating the tripe, the soup was basically like poorly seasoned milk, and didn't really have anything going on. They gave us bread rolls.. cold and probably from HEB. The goulash was okay, but nothing special. I wonder if we were to go back if we could find something truly unique and exciting, but out of 4 people, no one was interested in giving it a second chance. Bottom line, don't waste your time if you're looking for good food, but if you think it sounds like fun.. well, it's not. The coolest thing about it were the salt and pepper dispensers, they were little scoops, which was neat, but unfortunately every single thing needed salt added to have some sort of flavor, so they got old. I was really hoping for something neat and ethnic, and I got subpar home cooking. The best part was the price, it's not very expensive, but it shouldn't be. more

Tastes like home cooked food with love 10/3/2007

This is another resturant i frequent in Austin. Atmosphere is lacking a bit yes i agree but the food takes care of that. The appetizer plate of canapes and meats and veggies is a great start to any meal. I have tryed quite a few things all very good but i usually stick with the Pork Shnitzel very tasty!!! One time my girlfriend left her purse there. They were going to be closed for a month for vacation but we still managed to get in touch before they left and went to there house to pick it up. Very nice people :-) The food is just really great peasant food with alot of love. A must try for everyone. Pros: its good hearty food Cons: there not open everyday more

not a place for vegetarian 7/30/2007

This is not really a place for vegetarian. I ordered (I forget what it's called) something that has polenta, cheese, sour cream and sausages. I ordered it without the meat. Though it sounds kinda blah, I actually enjoyed it. I also had some of my friend's veggies (mainly with cabbage) and I enjoyed that as well. My friend didn't like her meat plate however. I probably won't be going back anytime soon. Waitress was awesome! Pros: waitress, cozy Cons: no vegetarian option more

Romanian Gourmet Food at an Affordable Price 7/2/2007

Authentic Romanian food in Austin?? You don't go here for the atmosphere, but the food makes it worth the trip -- even if it's not across the Big Pond. I was skeptical at first when I found this restaurant with a name that is better suited for a Halloween outing, but don't let that ""scare"" you off. Our hearty dishes were prepared as if they came out of an international cooking school. The prices were just right -- very affordable, and the food tasted expensive. If they would create more Romanian atmostphere for this cozy place and rename it something like ""Bucharest Bistro"", ""Transylvania Tastes"", or ""Romanian Village"" , this place would make it more onto the Bon Appetit map of Austin. The main attraction (the food), however, is already there. Pros: Food was fantastic! Cons: Ambience needs some work. more

Good Food and Service without chadeliers nor linen cloths 4/5/2007

My eccentric friend, Skatarina, and I went to this restaurant and we both liked our food. It's very basic and good food. If you're looking for frills and elegance, this is not for you. If you want to pay for fancy decor, go downtown to one of the tourist traps there. I like the food and think the waitstaff is very nice. Although there was a slight language barrier problem because my friend had an unusual order (a meat dish without meat!), the staff in the end did accomodate her after they actually understood what she wanted. We both give Drakula two fangs up! Pros: good and different Cons: plain (but to me, it's also a plus!) more

Good comfort food 3/18/2007

We tried this place on a Saturday night for dinner, and found the food to be good, and the atmosphere decent (although not very cozy). I had the stuffed cabbage and sauteed mushrooms, while my husband had the chicken schnitzel with french fries. The stuffed cabbage was very good, and the sausage it came with was excellent. My husband thought his schnitzel was a bit bland, but it was nicely cooked. The mushrooms were very good (if they were canned as some reviewers suggested, it didn't make much of a difference in the dish as they came in a delicious, flavorful broth). The french fries were good as well, with a hint of some flavor beyond just the frying oil. Overall, the dishes here are subtly spiced, so if you are looking for bold, spicy dishes, look elsewhere. The prices are very reasonable; most entrees were $10 or less at dinner. Pros: Food, prices Cons: Ambience leaves something to be desired more

Good food! 3/14/2007

This is a very small hole in the wall place but the food was excellent and decently priced. Pros: good food Cons: very small more

Excelent food, a must try 2/24/2007

First I was a bit skeptical of going to a Romanian restaurant in Austin, but now I'm glad I did ... I really missed the food back home. The restaurant does not look very nice, maybe a bit creepy, but the food they serve totally makes up for the lack of ambiance. It was excellent, really tasty and all for reasonable prices (3.99 for a soup and 9 - 12 for the main course). I'm a Romanian and I've lived 25 years in Romania and the food served here was better than many restaurants or even home cooked meals back in Romania. Pros: Good service and excelent food Cons: Ambience more

A Restaurant Named after an Eastern European Tyrant...YUM! 7/23/2006

Was that a Romanian restaurant we just passed? I proclaimed as we drove southbound on 183. That's how our Romanian restaurant experience started. We decided to pull in and try it out....The ambiance was a little disappointing, mildly depressing actually. The food was bland, way to much dill and everything tasted like it was from a package that said ""Add Water"" or open can and heat. ""These mashed potatoes taste like the ones from KFC""...hardly Romanian but whatever. The food was greasy, and the rolls were stale. Just Keep Driving.... Pros: Its Romanian! Cons: Ambience, Food more

European delight 7/15/2006

I've had incredible home-cooked meals in Romania. The food at Drakula's equals or surpasses them. The mici, stuffed peppers and goulash were excellent. The cheese pie, apple pie and whipped cream desserts were all very good. Our waitress was attentive and friendly but not overly so. The prices were VERY reasonable. The background music came across as easy listening Romanian pop, similar to Roma (Gypsy) music played throughout southeastern Europe. My only concern is that our group of three was the only group in the place on Sunday evening. I hope that there are more customers at other times during the week, as I would hate to see this delightful place disappear. Pros: Excellent food, service and prices Cons: Minimal ambience more

Hearty Romanian fare 6/30/2006

I had never had Romanian food, and I was really excited to see this place open up! It's home cooking, for sure. I had the meatball soup because it sounded so interesting. The soup was fine, but dunking the delicious rolls in the soup was really fantastic! I had the goulash. It was really good, very meaty! There was no room for dessert, but I'd love to go back and give some a try. Pros: authentic food and wine! more

Only Eastern European 6/29/2006

It's great to have an Eastern European restaurant in Austin. Surprisingly, given the Czech and German population in Central Texas, there are no such restaurants in Austin. This one is a keeper. The food is quite authentic, as is the decor. Having recently been to Romania a couple times, the visit felt like an authentic old-world experience. The prices are reasonable, and the food, while not gourmet, is very typical of a good home-cooked Romanian meal. The Romanian strudel was a great dissapointment, either being a couple days old or having been forzen-- because the dough was not crisp and fresh but limp and stale. I will go back-- because there's nothing else in Austin like it. Pros: Anbience is typically Romanian, food is Eastern European home-style, service is friendly Cons: Strudel was not fresh more

Very Authentic 5/15/2006

Having lived in Romania for more than two years, it was great to find a restaurant where not only the food is authentic but the ambience as well. Drakula takes me back to the neighborhood restaurants where I lived in Giurgiu Romania. And the food is fantastic and a great value for your money. I recommend the snitzel, mici (homemade skinless sausage) or the cabbage rolls. I have never been disappointed with the food. And the service is just like you would get in Romania also, where dinner is an event, not an in and out experience. Pros: authentic food, Romanian Ambience, Greal Value more

nothing special 3/19/2006

The food was OK, but just OK. Appetizers were nice, main dish OK, using canned mashrooms for the side dish is a bad choice. Dessert was excellent, together with the coffee. The ambience was dissapointing. Pros: inexpensive Cons: ambience more

Great food for a great price 11/8/2005

The food is excellent, prices are low for the quality and portion sizes. Try the homemade desserts - the chocolate cake is excellent. more
