Tried Again 12/23/2007

It had been awile so we tried them again tonight. $42 to two bowls of gumbo and a seafood salad....OUCH! The gumbo was good (not great) but the rice portions were very skimpy. There was a reasonable amount of seafood on the salad but the seasoning was bland and the tomatos were anemic. We continue to fondly remember the other Don's that we have eaten at and how great they were (are?) and that makes this one all the more disappointing. And with the new Bass Pro that is opening right across the interstate in February, we get a new seafood resturant. If the quality and prices don't improve this Don's is not long for Denham Springs and that is unfortunate. more

Don's Seafood Hut in Denham Springs, LA 3/27/2007

I've been eating at Don's Seafood Huts for 20 years and love the ones in Lafayette, LA and Baton Rouge, LA. The one in Denham is a HUGE disappointment. portions are small; prices are high; the catfish and shrimp don't taste fresh and I'm surprised the Landry family has not stepped in and corrected the myriad of problems. We love seafood and live in Denham Springs not far from this Don's; but now gladly drive to Baton Rouge and eat at one of the many great seafood resturants there. We have given this Don's half a dozen chances since they opened several years ago and the best meal we've had there was expensive average quality. I guess they are trying to catch tourist who want to stay close to the interstate so watch out! more

Don's Seafood Hut 4/1/2006

A long-time fan of Don's Seafood on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, I was thrilled to see that Denham Springs was getting a Don's Seafood Hut a few years ago. Unfortunately, it does not live up to the name of its predecessor. DSH is located in the remodeled location of a defunct restaurant and I'm sure that size limitations had an effect, but the general ambiance of the restaurant is not as comfortable space-wise as Don's on Airline Highway. More cramped and with less personality, DSH could just as well be any small local restaurant from the atmosphere. The menu is only a fraction of what is offered at Don's on Airline, but there are plenty of options to choose from. My husband was disappointed that they don't offer a broiled seafood platter like at the Airline location. I was VERY disappointed that Don's famous hush puppies are not served at all at DSH. The quality of what we've ordered there has been acceptable, and prices are in line with Don's on Airline ($15-$18 for a seafood platter). Another complaint that I have is in the size of the waiting area. On a busy Friday night it was standing room only, for an hour. I'm sorry, but this food and this atmosphere did not make the wait worth it. My advice? Spend the extra 30 minutes on the road driving to the Don's Seafood on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge and skip Don's Seafood Hut in Denham Springs. more
