Review content:
A long-time fan of Don's Seafood on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge, I was thrilled to see that Denham Springs was getting a Don's Seafood Hut a few years ago. Unfortunately, it does not live up to the name of its predecessor.
DSH is located in the remodeled location of a defunct restaurant and I'm sure that size limitations had an effect, but the general ambiance of the restaurant is not as comfortable space-wise as Don's on Airline Highway. More cramped and with less personality, DSH could just as well be any small local restaurant from the atmosphere.
The menu is only a fraction of what is offered at Don's on Airline, but there are plenty of options to choose from. My husband was disappointed that they don't offer a broiled seafood platter like at the Airline location. I was VERY disappointed that Don's famous hush puppies are not served at all at DSH. The quality of what we've ordered there has been acceptable, and prices are in line with Don's on Airline ($15-$18 for a seafood platter).
Another complaint that I have is in the size of the waiting area. On a busy Friday night it was standing room only, for an hour. I'm sorry, but this food and this atmosphere did not make the wait worth it.
My advice? Spend the extra 30 minutes on the road driving to the Don's Seafood on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge and skip Don's Seafood Hut in Denham Springs.
