I've looked high and low in this town for a hairdresser that gets it and I finally found her, Miss Kristie is the best hairdresser in Portland. I've been going to DLS for almost 2 years now and everyone there gives great hair!!\r Highly recommended! Pros: Casual Atmosphere more

I've gone to Amie for cuts over a period of 3 years. In the beginning she was pretty nice. Then it all went downhill as she became a co-owner. This last time I called for an appointment and since no one ever answers a phone left a message. No one called me back, so I went to make an appointment in person. So I show up for it on time, Amie sees me and knows I'm there and is still working on her current client. I sit and wait and she doesn't bother to acknowledge it's my time and at least say she's running late. I ask her how much longer I'll be waiting. She says 10 min like she doesn't even care if i stay or leave and my time is of no importance. I left and will never go back. Please Amie, learn to be considerate of your clients' time. It happened before too. If you're running late at least be aware of it. Pros: easy to find parking Cons: hard to make an appointment, long wait, and then it doesn't star on time more

This is such a great salon! Everyone provides a very friendly and pleasant environment. Rebecca does my hair and she is the best stylist I've ever had. I have gone to many places over the years and it seems that no one can understand my unique texture. Once I discovered Rebecca a couple years ago, I stopped looking because I had finally found my perfect hair match. She listens to what I want and she also has a lot of advice when I need it since I constantly want to change my hair but I have a hard time deciding what I want to do with it. I always end up leaving DLS happy because Rebecca gives me a great cut every time, and I am not easy to please when it comes to my hair. I think that someone's hair is such an important part of their appearance and I really appreciate Rebecca's hard work. I highly recommend this salon, and especially recommend Rebecca! more

I started going to DLS a few years ago and haven't been in about a year. I called to schedule an appointment with Shannon (who is GREAT, by the way) and when I asked the guy who answers the phone if she still worked there and about her availability, he kind of snorted and asked if I'd even been in to see Shannon before. I said I had, he asked my name and when I gave it to him, he told me in an accusatory tone that my name wasn't coming up in the computer. As if this somehow changed Shannon's availability or the extent to which I am welcome to see Shannon. He gave me two available times to see her on a day when I could make it, 11:00 or 1:00. I opted for the 11:00 and wondered when he was going to ask me what I needed done at the appointment. He rudely stated ""ok, we have you down for a haircut only at 11:00"" and I told him I needed a cut and color. He again snorted with exasperation and sounded angry when he said that we would then have to go with the 1:00 appointment. \r \r I was hurt and angered after the call and it's been bugging me to the point that I canceled my appointment. Shannon does a great job and I've not only enjoyed her skill, but her company. However, I refuse to be treated poorly by someone who seems to think he's a member of a ""cool guy"" club that nobody else can join. When your business depends on people coming through the door, the person on the other side of that door should not make those customers want to walk away because they've been disparaged. \r \r Shannon-I'm so sorry and I'll miss the great cut and color thing that we had going on, but I know I'll find another who doesn't have such a unsavory character manning the phones and the front desk. Dirty Little Secret is a perfect name for this salon... it's the best kept secret on MLK! \r \r Located in a cool old building on MLK and Broadway, the inside of this place is a huge labyrinth of stylist chairs and spa treatments. The charming girl who cut my hair (ask for Elyse) gave me a beer and made me comfortable. She was VERY knowledgeable, and had great ideas about current trends that I am totally clueless on. Plus, everybody is cool and friendly. We laughed and joked the whole time, about everything from TV shows to George Foreman grills. \r \r I don't typically go to a salon for a haircut (I'm a guy), but I am beyond satisfied with my new cut. I am never going to a barber again... now I just need to work up the courage to get my eyebrows waxed... maybe a MANicure... who knows? \r \r In short: Go to Dirty Little Secret. I am very dissapointed though, I called to make a pedicure appt. with Charity, only to find out she's GONE! :( They don't know if shes at a new salon or not but I really would LOVE to find her! When I moved to Portland from San Diego, I had a haircut I loved, and went to a stylist for a trim, telling her I wanted the same cut, just a trim. She cut my shoulder-length, layered cut short, and I was miserable. After it started growing out, I read about DLS and decided to give Amie a try after reading that she was a curly hair specialist. I showed her a picture of the style I liked, and she trimmed my hair and suggested that I wait 3 months for my next trim in order for the length to grow back. I left the salon feeling pretty again, and knew I had found the perfect stylist. I loved my cut, and it continued to look great for the entire 12 weeks until my next appointment, which I think is absolutely amazing! Now, 10 months later, I have my length back, AND a beautiful haircut., which I receive lots of compliments on. Amie cuts my hair dry, which I think has a lot to do with the wonderful way the cut turns out, because I have hair that looks completely different when it's wet. It's fine, thin, and frizzy, and I will never let anyone but Amie cut my hair, as I think she performs magic on hair! And she's really nice besides. If she ever leaves the Portland area, I'll travel to wherever she is, that's how much I love the way she cuts my hair. (My only complaint about DLS is the male receptionist. He's rather unfriendly and indifferent, and I am always relieved when I can book my next appointment with Amie instead of him. I feel as though I'm imposing on his time when I need to talk to him. After years of dying my own hair dark with at home color I decided to go to a professional and see what my options were to make it lighter. I saw Rebecca at Dirty Little Secret and she exceeded all of my expectations! From the moment I sat in her chair she was very friendly, and attentive to what I was saying. She took her time in explaining all of my color options considering affordability, and maintenance and I really felt like she really understood where I was coming from. I can tell that she puts a lot of thought and detail into her work, and as a result I ended up with was the perfect shade of brown with gorgeous highlights......she even stayed late at the end of her day to add on a haircut....what a sweetheart! GO GO GO to Dirty Little Secret! It will be the best decision of your life. It's both low-key and perfectly fancy, all of the stylists are amazing and each has their own specialty, the color-scheme is great and you will walk away shocked by how good you look. The owners (Amie and Lucinda) are fantastically sweet and you will feel good about yourself for supporting their business. I have been there several times now and I will never go anywhere else. Hot Tip: They just hired a new stylist and he is perfection: I have had some of my best conversations with him and I always leave the salon knowing more about anything from music to food politics. Besides that he is a wizard with his shears and has given me and my friends fabulous, beautiful haircuts. He can do the classics and he can do art haircuts as well, it all depends on how brave you are! Walk in to see him or call up and ask for the new guy...satisfaction guaranteed. more

I had a facial by Megan at the Dirty Little Secret Spa and my life was changed forever. My skin is very reactive and dry. After any other facial I look a monster my skin is so irritated. After Ms. Megan finished - my face was softer and more luminous then I have ever experienced in my life. She has an excellent knowledge of skin type and knows exactly what to use for any skin condition. Her atmosphere and personality is very relaxing and she gave a face and arm massage that melted away 100 years of stress (I swear my grandma was even relaxed after my facial). The products she uses are amazing! They are all natural, and very effective. They all smell delicious as they are hand made in Hungry. Usually I don't bother with products, but I had to have these. This was the best facial I have ever had. I have been getting facials monthly for the last 5 years and I have paid a lot more for a lot less - Megan at the Dirty Little Secret is the most amazing experience for a very reasonable price. I have been seeing Aimee for awhile and she does a great job with the color and cut of my hair, which is naturally curly. I have not had any trouble with appointments or return calls either, plus she recommended some great product and had some good tips for how to care for my curly hair. She suggested I try Josh for my brows and I was very, very pleased with the result as he does a great job with shaping. Unfortunately, he is no longer at DLS, but I found him again and he is just around the corner at Akasu on N. Williams. I want to try and be as positive as possible -- because my hair cut and color were fantastic -- but I am now looking for a new salon because I just couldn't take the ""receptionist"" and issues with appointments anymore! My hair has never looked better because I finally found someone who knows curly hair. However, after having to cancel my last appointment due to an illness that swept my whole family, I have been unable to reschedule. No one will return my calls, and I can't seem to get anyone to answer the phone when I do call. The receptionist is not friendly and always seems to be in a hurry and just plain irritated at times because he has to ""deal"" with you. I realize that if I tried to call several times a day that I could probably get a live person to answer, but now it has become awkward and embarrassing and I have decided that I will just move on. I didn't like the location, and the salon itself seemed dirty to me -- not ""hip"" as others have stated. A couple of times they were having issues with their computer and their appointments were lost. It seemed like every time I went in, there was some issue going on -- not professional! I realize that stuff happens, but not apologizing, or at least recognizing/validating the situation is also not professional. I know this may sound irrational to some of you, but I just didn't get a good feeling when I was at the Dirty Little Hair Salon. I guess maybe the opening of their day spa has caused a few little hiccups and maybe the issues with the appointments will get better. The actual hair services I received were the best I have ever had. Unfortunately, I will have to move on because the negatives of the salon outweigh the positives -- it is just not worth it to me. \r I was referred to this place by a friend of mine 2 years ago and have never looked back. I have to say that I love how Chai takes care of my hair. I have curly, unruly hair and I love the fact that she also has curly (not unruly) hair and is able to advise me on the the best approach to make my curls work for me. I Also love love Josh in the spa. I came in with just awful looking eyebrows that had been subjected to torture due to other so-called professionals, and he was able to clean them up and make them look so pretty, even and natural. At the same time I also came in with the worst complexion I have had in my adult life(acne, uneven skin tone, scarring) and with his guidance I discovered one of the best products for my skin, Eminence. In just 4 weeks he was able to advise me on the proper regime and my face has not looked better. Thanks so much Josh and Chai. Sure, just with any place there are some kinks that need to be worked out, like timing...but I keep coming back for a reason and that reason is that they just do such a damn great job! more

I have tried to make an appointment with this salon twice, and neither my phone calls nor emails have ever been returned. For the record, I have always specified that I wished for an appointment ""at the next available slot; I hear that you're busy."" I keep trying because I've heard great things, but I'm getting annoyed. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I being ignored because I'm not being specific? more

I recently moved to portland and was starting to get frustrated about finding a good hairdresser. After a string of bad cuts I was about to give up when someone suggested Dirty Little Secret. I booked an Appointment with Elise, who my friend sees, and I have gone back twice since. I have been extremely happy with my cut and color and feel like I have never looked better! I booked a spa facial and brow arch, and both services really helped freshen up my face... and the spa space is really lovely! Thanks guys!!
