Way too loud, expensive & so-so food, ok service 5/15/2009

The food is ok but not great - the tapas, entrees, meat and cheese boards, and paella are serviceable but are indistinguishable from those served at other local restaurants. The service also passes as average, though there are missteps (e.g., crash landing a scorching hot iron skillet with paella in the wrong place and accidentally locking out patrons without realizing it) that are minor and make for good story fodder. Cuerno's biggest problem is the volume of the entertainment - I couldn't hear what my friends in front of me and to the side of me were saying. Cuerno's dining room is relatively small, but the singing, guitar playing, and dancers are loud enough for a room 4 times the size. It's also positioned in the middle of the restaurant but is obscured by a big metal cow, which means that half the restaurant gets a show and the other half just gets blasted. If Cuerno drops prices 15-20% (since $40 for paella is way too high) and lowers the volume, then I could give the restaurant 3.5 - 4 stars. Pros: Ok service, passable food Cons: Expensive, too loud more

Horrid Service 5/10/2009

Our server this past Saturday night was horrible. She disappeared multiple times during the ordering process. Nobody at the table could understand what she was saying. Our appetizers arrived and were delivered to the wrong people without communicating what they were. The food was average but nothing special. A very poor experience. Spend your money elsewhere. Pros: Decent Sangria Cons: Horrid Service paired with overpriced food more

Great food, great service 3/9/2009

We started at the bar, where the cheerful bartender offered to pick my drink (""Holy Water"" - it was delicious!), which was on the house when he found out it was my birthday. Once we moved to our table (next to the buII; great people-watching location) our experience only improved. The staff truly works together, so in addition to our waiter, anyone that walked by kept our water and cocktail glasses full all night. \r The dinner was amazing - fresh ingredients, perfectly prepared. We had the gambas al ajillo, croquetas, goat cheese fondue, and a chorizo special...all of it phenomenal. We shared a dessert - a tart topped with brandied cherries - that was the perfect topper to the meal.\r We ended up staying a couple of hours, chatting and having more drinks, and never felt like they were trying to get us out. On the contrary, this is the friendliest restaurant staff I've encountered in recent memory.\r I love Spanish and tapas restaurants, and have been to many in different cities over the years, and Cuerno now definitely ranks in my Top 3. Pros: Fresh & delicious food, amazing staff more

Ok food & bad service 3/6/2009

We were so excited to go to this restaurant after reading reviews but were so dissapointed after all. Food is just ok, not anything amazing. It is one of those restaurant that are very trendy but not focused on what's important more

Great Food, Atmosphere and Drinks 2/22/2009

I went to Cuerno a few weeks back and had a fantastic time. This is located in a great part of town for going out. The food was great and the menu was unique and unlike anything else I have had in the city. Traditional paella's to share with the table, great Spanish meat dishes and a selection of creative appetizers. All complemented by a one of a kind cocktail menu, excellent ambiance and attentive service. Will definitely be back.\r more

Good out side of Paella 2/15/2009

Visited on Valentines Day. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Ordered Sangaria which was great. Salads and soups were good. Our friends both got entrees that they enjoyed; chicken and tuna. My husband and I ordered paella knowing a true Spanish restaurant would have the best. We choose the traditional with shrimp, chicken and sausage. The shrimp was so over done I could not peel the shells off, and the entire dish was so FISHY. We could barely eat it. I have had Paella at other places who do not specialize in this dish and they make it better than Cuerno. Overall it is a good spot, but the Paella is very disappointing. Pros: Location, parking, drinks Cons: Paella more

To americanise the food.... is really hard to fin any kind of authentic food from Spain in here because ""American do not like really really the flavor of other cultures 2/14/2009

Americans in general (more then 70% )do not like any kind of texture in the food, so mean that if you want to be successful here you need to change the ""real thing"" , so i got the paella and to me was to soggy ... to me in some kind of butter, always butter in everything,. or to much oil...is a beautiful restaurant...but you lost a lot when a plate that take good 45 minutes to make the bring it to you in 15 minutes. more

Overall best experience 10/27/2008

I have never written a review on any website but after my 4th time at Cuerno, I had to take a minute to gush about how much I love it!! The food reminds me of my favorite restaurant in Barcelona, La Fonda. I searched NYC for tapas that would bring me back to Spain and was always disappointed. At Cuerno everything is delicious, every time. I've brought family from out of town, business associates, and friends for special occasions and each time unique and rewarding. The ambiance is warm and eclectic. Cuerno makes an experience out of dining...exactly how it should be. Pros: friendly staff, fantastic food, overall dining experience more

best spanish restaurant in town 9/4/2008

\r I am from Madrid and all I can say about Cuerno is that everytime I go there, I feel homesick. The menu reminds me of Spain and home cooking. It has a lot of Mediterranean and catalan flavour. You can find a good selection of main dishes from the Spanish cuisine; the fabada asturiana is excellent, the boquerones are superb and the croquetas are really good. The only dish that I am not crazy about is the tortilla with truffle. If you want to try the real ""jamon serrano iberico"" this is the only place in Atlanta where you can get it, forget about procciutto or the jamon Navidul at Krog's bar. One of my favorite dishes is the fideua, you can find the taste the same Fideua in any coastal town in Spain, but for much more money. \r I have read some reviews of people complaining about its fischy taste. Well, Fideua is made with fish and if you like fish, it just tastes wonderful!!!\r Let's talk about paella now. Some people who are not from Spain think that paella is cooked with yellow rice (kind of basmati one) and a couple of sprawns (without the heads).. Well, that's not the case, unless you eat paella in a restaurant with a tourist clientele.\r In Spain, we have all type of paellas; some are cooked with veggies, others with chicken, and with seafood.\r In Cuerno, you can taste different paellas. They are all very good. My favorites are called ''Arroz Negro"" and ""Arroz Caldoso."" (The arroz caldoso is very similar to a soupy rissotto.)\r I like the paellas at Cuerno so much that when I don't feel like cooking, I go there to have a good and tasty paella.\r \r Desserts: they have an awesome crema catalana; the torrijas look more like a brownie, but they taste good.\r \r Wines: One recommendation - never ask for cava in a porron; they have wonderful moscatel (sweet dessert) called Casta Diva.\r \r Buen provecho!\r \r more

Excellent food & great ambience 9/2/2008

i have had probably 5 times dinner at Cuerno.\r \r POSITIVE:\r + the food tastes like the real deal you get in spain\r + always had excellent service (friendly & knowledgeable) \r + i love the interior design of Cuerno; besides Spice Market / W Hotel this is as stylish as it gets in ATL\r \r NEGATIVE:\r - NONE\r \r overall, my spanish friends love the food and since Cuerno passes this tough test it must be excellent. more

Authentic Spanish food 8/6/2008

Me encanta Cuerno! It's my new favorite restaurant.\r I have dined out at Cuerno at least 8 times. Everytime I have enjoyed the authenticity and fresheness of the food as well as the wonderful wine selection. My father's family is from La Coruna - Spain and I grew up enjoying their cooking. Cuerno is the closest experience I have found so far in a Spanish restaurant in Atlanta. I love the decor as well specially ''El Toro"", it is a unique piece of art. The music could not be better: non-commercial Flamenco background music at just the right volume. Pros: Food, ambiance, service more

Not So Good 7/23/2008

I have been twice. Both occasions suggested by friends. Wine selection is good and the service was fine.\r The food on the other hand is just plain bad. I admit I don't love spains cuisine (spent a week south of malaga a few years ago) but the food is just weak. Does the mascot really need a prince albert? more

Better for a light night out or before dinner 7/20/2008

Pros: cozy and hip atmosphere, good wine and cava, excellent charcuterie plate. Cons: Paella Valencia was way too dry-- not a lick of moisture in it and I had to choke it down. I'll come back for wine and a few tapas. Pros: great atmosphere Cons: overcooked food more

Ok but nothing to write home about 7/8/2008

I lived in Spain for several years and fell in love with the cuisine. I try every Spanish tapas restaurants I can find and the best so far has been Cafe Iberico and Cafe Babareeba in Chicago. That being said, the menu items at Cuerno are authentic but are pre-cooked and arrive almost immediately with your drink. I tried the croquetas, tortilla, and poblanos (peppers). The peppers were pretty typcial (good) but the tortilla and croquetas could use some work. Service was excellent and atmosphere was nice. more

Drinks Only Place 6/16/2008

Paella (valencia) was overcooked, again. Many of my neighbors and friends have had the same experience; all on different nights. I suppose focusing on interior decoration, which is nice in its way, may provide the ability of some customers to overlook the quality of food. This is unfortunate since the owner's Sotto-Sotto restaurant seems to consistently deliver great food within the same price range. No complaints on service. more

Worthwhile Dining Experience 6/7/2008

We are veterans of Atlanta and are always in search of new restaurants. This was our first trip to Cuerno's which we found on the the internet. We found the restaurant to be at least a 4 and half star establishment. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the wine selection. The only ding was they had some trouble with the preparing a long island ice tea; forgivable, as it was not on the drink menu. However, they fix a great tom collins! \r \r The food was delicious!! Two of our group shared the Paella Valenciana while I and one other had the steak. We recommend both selections. You will not be disappointed. We also shared several tapas ( Ham croquette, mixed olives, deep fried peppers, and almonds). An excellent way to start the evening. \r \r The evening was capped off with a very ROBUST cup of cappucino; which enabled us to drive home. This, we hope, will be one of many visits to this establishment.\r \r TIP: We dined early and used the valet parking (very much worth it). We would also recommend making reservations. We were seated promptly. \r more

best paella in town 5/19/2008

I went to cuerno recently and have to say that the food and service was impecable. I had the tabla de embutidos which is the spanish version of antipasto. Nice selection of cheeses and cured meats paired with quince marmalade and the grilled tomato bread. Fantastic. Me and my guests had also the plancha . In that selection we had the mussels, clams, and shrimp. Now that was the so good that the only thing missing was a beach chair and the beautiful beaches of Spain .For our last course we had the fideo paella. Let me tell you that was the best paella i have ever had. It even tops any paella I had in Spain. Wow.I have been to many Spanish restaurants here in the U.S. and in Europe but Cuerno is by far the best on my list. Cangratulations to whoever is in charge of the kitchen and dinning room. OLE TORO Pros: paella, plancha, tapas more

Best Paella in town 4/28/2008

I am from Barcelona and found the menu at Cuerno the most authenic anywhere here in the States and that includes N.Y., Boston and L.A. The socarrat (caramelized rice) on the snail and rabbit paella was as good as any I have had in cooked over fire in Valencia. The service was friendly and efficient and the wine list top rate. more

Appetizers are great..Stay away from the Paella! 4/23/2008

Drinks and Appetizers are great and unique...\r \r The Paella was absolutely horrible. We had the Prawn and Mushroom one and it was inedible. The giant prawns still had their heads on them (not a problem for me, but my wife hated it) but they tasted very very bad. The whole dish just smelled like bad fish..will be back for drinks and apps but not dinner.\r more

customer service what? 4/22/2008

worst customer service ever!!! the host at the door told us it would be a twenty minute wait for a table and to grab a drink at beleza (right next door) an HOUR later, the same host walks into beleza. we thought he was coming to grab us but he acted like he didn't even see us. i had to get up and go over to him, while he was joking around with one of the bartenders, and ask him about our table. he begrudgingly walked us to cuerno, to an almost empty restaurant. we wondered how long we'd waited at beleza, for no reason. service was some of the worst i've experienced in atlanta. lack of menu knowledge, lack of wine knowledge, lack of even beer knowledge. we had two different servers approach our table, proclaiming to be ""our server"" and each was worse than the next. i think the owner was running food to tables: he plopped a meat and cheese plate in front of my date, without explaining what any of it was. when we asked our server which cheese was which, he said he didn't really know what any of it was, and that he, ""probably couldn't pronounce it anyway."" \r it's a shame that the food is out of this world. some of the most authentic spanish food i've ever eaten, it's almost not worth going back because of how sloppy and ignorant the servers are. they are pretensious, but have nothing to back it up with. our server was no help with the (all spanish=cool) wine list, it was a good thing i knew what we were looking for. \r after reading some of the other reviews, the overall feel that i got from the restaurant is that it really has potential to be a great spot: the menu is honestly fabulous, the cocktails are innovative and the wine list is authentic. dead on with all the tangibles. it's the service that needs help. severe help. Pros: amazing food, ambiance, Cons: sloppy, forgetful, uneducated service more

  • In Short
With a critically acclaimed Spanish predecessor (Cuerno) that was a little too advanced for Atlantan’s palettes, chef-owner Riccardo Ullio dialed it back on the conception with Lupe, but lost nothing in the execution. This gourmand-driven Mexican spot delivers a menu that is one part sophistication and one part comfort. To appease the authentic-craving foodies, tacos are traditional, boasting a succulent and well-marbled braised goat and soft beef tongue among the usual steak and fish offerings. Entrees offer enchiladas with rice and beans to the suburban Mexican fan, but raise eyebrows with grilled chicken slathered in a traditional dark mole and served with rice and corn tortillas. Staples like guacamole and margaritas are some of the city’s best, and the setting is as cool as it is comfortable. Ullio might have missed the mark with Cuerno, but Lupe fits like a glove.
