Great Bar 2/28/2009

I love going there with a handful of friends on the weekends and just getting some good beers. They've got the goob ones, but nothing too special. Prices aren't bad either compared to other places I've been to. Only complaint it the lack of tables sometimes and the long walk. more

Descend into Darkness 11/10/2008

This is a great hideaway bar. Down the stairs, order the beer, and hide out in a back booth. The jukebox is great too. more

Good pub 11/14/2006

The college inn pub is a pretty good pub. They're drinks are good..the atmosphere is relaxed and awesome. It's definately a good place to shoot some pool. Pros: Great place, good drinks, good pool tables more

Great for a 21 RUN 10/31/2006

I loved this bar! It has the underground feel of an Irish pub and is relaxing and low key. They have pool tables, darts and glossy wooden tables, it's not too loud and definitely a great place--and safe--place to end up at on your 21 run (or a friend's). I would definitely recommend this location to anyone wanting a relaxing drink after work. Pros: great atmosphere Cons: A bit of a walk down the Ave more

Best Nachos, Beer, and Atmosphere on The Ave. 9/18/2006

The College Inn Pub is my favorite place to go on Friday afternoons. My boyfriend and I usually order a pitcher of beer and an order of nachos--nachos which, by the way, are the best in the University District. In short, the nachos are unbelievably delicious. The bartenders are very friendly, the service is quick (when you don't have to wait in line on busy nights), and the atmosphere can't be beat. The place can get busy on the usual college drinking nights, but the crowd is largely jovial rather than annoying. If anything, you must go for the nachos. And the rotating taps of microbrews, which are often really good choices. Pros: Good food, low-priced daily drink specials, good happy hour Cons: Can get busy during nights more

The best place to hang out with friends 9/17/2006

Amazing. I lived in Britain for a year and this is the first spot I've found that has the same feel as pubs: places where people come with their friends, drink pints of beer (only in this case, there are PITCHERS which is a brilliant American invention) and can spend hours with no pressure in a totally casual environment. This is the brilliantness of the College Inn. Not sure how I would feel about it if I were a student--I'm just young enough to pass for one. Great beer selection and deals on drinks. Pros: Ambience, beer selection, casual vibe Cons: Sometimes hard to get a table more

Favorite U-District Pub 6/25/2006

Since we can no longer smoke inside a bar in Washington, the clouded "can't see across the bar" atmosphere is no longer a part of the College Inn Pub. The fact that the College Inn Pub is underground and huge beams are here and there, just adds to the atmosphere. It is a great place to hang out with friends or a great place to meet new ones. Pros: Excellent beer choices on tap Cons: If you are going right after work - parking. more

college inn 7/8/2004

This is my favorite bar in the U-District. Every other bar has issues, but the College Inn is the perfect mix of people, drinks, pool, darts, music. more

I love the College Inn Pub 6/1/2002

I've been going to the CIP for several years. Yes, it can get smoky, but it's in a cellar, so, duh. The beer selection is terrific--a lot of local and craft brews--and while many people were worried about how the atmosphere and crowd might change when hard liquor was added, it really has only opened up more options in terms of the libation menu. The food menu, while it hasn't much changed, is still good, solid pub grub. The staff is friendly (as long as you don't try and pull attitude on them--be a jerk, especially to other patrons, and you'll be out of there in a heartbeat) and while it does seem like the customers are getting younger every year, is still just as welcoming to the regulars as it always has been. Pros: Great beer selection, Cool staff, Good prices Cons: Can get smoky, Only 1 good pinball, Parking can be iffy more

Editorial
  • The Scene
A staircase descent leads directly to a turret-like bar, which shares a room with a pair of pool tables and a few clusters of motley university sorts--haggled overachievers who can't put aside their notes even while drinking, chess combatants, lonely souls engrossed in "Star Wars" novels and perma-sodden ball-capped dudes. The cozier place to be, though, is in the low-lit back room that features comfortably weathered wooden booths engraved with graffiti that ranges the full spectrum of profundity.

    The Draw
A frequently rotating roster of microbrews, complemented by a full bar and decent pub grub (half-price nachos on Monday), offers ample incentive to visit, but it's the sturdy environs and low-key atmosphere that provide the greater comforts here. The charm extends beyond the student body--professors and informed outsiders also make up a sizable chunk of the clientele.
