wings to die 4,, atmosphere discerning 1/10/2010

best wings I've had ever, hands down. So good my nose hurts when they bring them to me and I smell them, plus they give you a ton of them in contrast to other places. It has some fine green plant chopped up and sprinkled on it. The one thing I can't stand about this place it how it seems to be completely gay themed, and even that wouldn't bother me it's just that the awkward looks I get when I come to have dinner, it's like a albino walked into a black panther meeting. You see I'm 6""3, white as a ghost, and because of my job I wear combat boots and swat team pants and I usually show up right when I get off work so I look tactical ""not my fault"" but to walk in a see a bunch of gay dudes looking at me like a intruder that just compromised their perimeter, coupled with their ""fagg hag"" lady friends gawking at me with a offended expression. I get a overwhelming sense that I'm not welcome. I understand that this is andersonville but I'm a vet and I served over seas while in the 82nd airborne as a paratrooper and if I want to get some fracking wings after a hard days work I think it isn't too much to ask to not be looked at in a condescending manner because I don't fit the profile. experiences like this further detach me from the human condition thus making it harder for me to relate, ultimately I find myself going back less and less....sux....but they really do have good wings. Pros: wings that set a standard which I now compair by Cons: a theme uninviting for those that don't drink that koolaid more

Atmosphere, drink selection, and excellent food 10/4/2009

I live in Andersonville and I'm at Charlie's at least once a week. I've brought all of my friends here and nobody has been disappointed. I have yet to order anything off the menu that I didn't like. My absolute favorite is their chicken sandwich. I also recommend their burgers, steak salad, and brunch menu. The atmostphere is always very friendly and lively (and family friendly before 9pm). If you're in the neighborhood, you can't pass up a visit to Charlie's. Pros: Beer selection, full bar, friendly atomosphere, tasty food Cons: Small menu, more

okay for a quick lunch 7/27/2007

This is okay to have lunch like a sandwich or salad. If you come in the evening, do so for drinks and appetizers only. (and sit outside) Keep in mind that it is ""franchisy"" as far as food goes & the menu is all over the place without any real focus but many of the unenlightened nouveau residents are smitten. There is a variety of handmade flat bread pizzas that are nice with drinks and the appetizer menu is good. The wine & beer list is great but it can't carry the inconsistent quality of the food. I grew up 2 blocks from here in ""Andersonville"" and remember the original tin stamped ceiling. They did try to maintain an air of old Chicago atmosphere but the cultural kiss of death is the big screen TV by the bar. When you see this you know you can say goodbye to ambience no matter what pains they took to preserve anything else. The seating outside is best. Chicago has so many great one of a kind places to have drinks or dine that I would not rush back here. Pros: good beer & wine menu Cons: The food is unpredictable & the only good seating is outside more

Beer good. Food bad. 5/14/2007

What more can I say? They have a huge selection of beer- I found my favorite beer on tap here... it became my favorite after drinking it here the first time. They no longer have it, but they still have lots of other beers. The food is horrible. I would go so far as to say that it's worse than bar food- although that's what it is. Don't go here for dinner. Go here for drinks and maybe order fries if you start to over do it on the alcohol. I have been here 4 times to meet people for dinner. I got something different everytime. Everyone I have ever eaten here with has also been disgusted by the food. Again--- Beer good! Food bad! more

two words: Chili and Cobb salad. Ok, 3 words 9/6/2006

They have some of the best chili ever. And a big bowl is only something like 5 bucks. The Cobb salad is also fantastic, and that's a dish that lots of restaurants don't do well. I've had some really excellent comfort-food meals here. It's a great place when you're not sure just what you're in the mood for. There are lots of great things on this menu, and I haven't yet ordered anything I was disappointed in. more

Welcome to Applebee's 4/5/2006

Yuck! Thankfully, there are so many wonderful restaurants in Andersonville that there's really no reason to have to visit Charlie's. The food is bland, average chain-restaurant fare and the service is always clueless. Don't waste your money. Cons: Bland food, Poor service more

Could be better 11/18/2004

Avoid this place-at least the dining aspect-if you're looking for something in the way of vegetarian fare. I believe the only thing on the menu besides a side salad is a fancy macaroni and cheese dish that, while enormous and filling, was pretty boring. The beer list is definitely a highlight, although one of the slightly off-beat beers that I tried was slightly flat which may mean they don't go through everything as quickly as they'd like to. Pros: Atmosphere, Beer and wine list Cons: , No real vegetarian op, Beer storage more

Nice Decor 11/30/2002

The Ham n' Cheese on Pretzelbread was yummy. I highly reccommend this place, but you need to give them a hard time about charging tax on top of the listed price on drinks... I've never been to a place that does that. Pros: Nice Decor, Lots of Variety, Friendly Waitstaff more

great big food! 11/8/2002

I went to a charity function at this new location and the comfort food was flowing. The big space is filled with beautiful wood, cozy booths, a huge bar and plenty of large tables. I've always liked the food at the Lincoln Park Charlie's and it seems that the meatloaf, burgers, and pot roast will be joined by some more upscale treats. They have something like 70 beers and one of the bartenders was telling me that they put a lot of thought into their new wine list. Everybody was super friendly and I think it's definately worth checking out! more
