Best

My girlfriends and I LOVE Smith Street and have been hanging out at the bars and restaurants there for years now. It was only this summer that we stumbled upon Chance...and we can...

Worst

Service is inconsistent and inattentive.

Editorial review from Citysearch 10/8/2012

Better then most of the spots on Smith for a quick bite more

Great Asian Chic 6/29/2010

I always enjoy going to Chance. The food is pretty good and the potions are generous as well. The wait staff is always friendly and pretty attentive to the patrons. I personally recommend the Chance Chicken and Two Flavor Shrimp. The drinks aren't bad either. The Chance Mojito rocks, as do the Pomegranate Mojito & Margarita. Neat little summer spot to sit outside and have a few drinks with a good meal. Pros: Good Food, Drinks, & Staff Cons: Small Space more

Great Place 3/30/2010

They have a wide range of things on the menu. You will find what your looking for. Pros: Good Food, Good Staff, Good Drinks Cons: Size is a little small more

great birthday dinner...excellent food & staff 1/11/2010

I celebrated my 21st birthday at Chance this past weekend. Me and my party all had an excellent time and loved the food, one of my friends did complain that the sauce for the crispy noodles was a little bit spicy... but she's super picky and I found the sauce perfect (with a little bit of an after kick of spice). They seated us on time, didn't mind that about half my party didn't show up or that we all requested separate checks. Our server was excellent and friendly and always available when i turned around looking for something. My mother had pre-arranged for them to serve us desert and they put together a beautiful presentation of their chocolate souffle, and wrote ""Happy Birthday"" across the plate for me. It was super nice that everyone in the restaurant also joined in singing :-) I had the Green River appetizer which was delish, the avocado was a tad over ripe making it slightly difficult to pick up with chopsticks. The Chance Mojito a combo of classic mojito with pineapple and lychee... amazing! (the mojitos seemed to be a hit, i can't remember turning around at any point to see the bartender doing anything besides bounding mint leaves. The Hot and Sour Chicken Soup is the BEST i've ever had! perfect, good quality vegetables, high levels of spice and white meat chicken mmmm As an Entree I had the sweet sesame beef, which was again delicious, the sauce had a bit of a tang to it almost vinegary but good....my only complaint was that the veggies we're hidden under the beef and i didn't even see them until I was full :-( We had the Chocolate Souffle as well as their green tea mille crepes... both we're to die for! Pros: great food, reasonable prices, great drinks Cons: small more

Great food and great service 8/1/2009

My husband searched for dim sum or just dumplings in brooklyn on his i-phone and found Chance. It was a Saturday afternoon and we did not feel like going into manhattan so we gave Chance a chance. Our party of 3 was seating quickly, but the place was empty so that's no biggie. The waiter was pleasant and polite and answered all of our questions. The dumplings were hot and delicious, especially the shrimp and crabmeat dumpling that contained a warm broth and had to be eaten with a spoon. My husband enjoyed the hot and sour soup so much that he ordered a second cup. Lastly, I left my reading glasses on the table. Another waiter ran after me on Smith to return them to me. I'm thinking of going back for my birthday in a few weeks with friends. However, after reading some of the reviews, I will give it another try one evening to make sure what we experience was not a fluke. All in all, we left this meal extremely happy! Pros: Great dumplings more

Worst Service EVER 2/18/2009

i stopped in with a couple friends for drinks & apps at the bar, it was horrendous. The place was empty, the bartender kept looking at us & nodding, so we thought he was coming over...10 minutes, still no menu, no water...got up asked for menus...nod...5 minutes later, menus. our other friends showed up, we waved, because clearly patience was not the key to service in this place...tried to order drinks, bartender at this point, was in 'deep' conversation with a server. I've been working in rest. for a long time, & eating out for longer, i have a high tolerance for bad service, but never in my life have i experienced something like this. We ended up leaving after 20 + minutes w/out having had or odered 1 drink in an empty bar. Cons: SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE more

Avoid. 9/14/2008

The food was disgusting. I ordered the crab appetizer because it had been recommended in a magazine review. It tasted like old, dirty sea water on a stale cracker... Then, after the waiter's rec, I ordered a sea scallop dish. It, too, was inedible. I expected just a handful of scallops, but it arrived packed with two dozen small and gooey bites. Normally, I can eat pretty much anything, but this was pathetic especially given the price. more

Most Underrated Restaurant on Smith Street!!! 8/4/2008

My girlfriends and I LOVE Smith Street and have been hanging out at the bars and restaurants there for years now. It was only this summer that we stumbled upon Chance...and we can't get enough of it! During the week, we come by after work for their happy hour special at the bar. $5 mojitos!!! I usually spend 9 or MORE at other places and they don't even make them right...these mojitos are the best I've had AND cheap! Their non-happy-hour-drinks are a few dollars more but well worth it. I love their lychee martini and pomegranate mojitos - yummy. And if you like asian cuisine, this place has everything. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and more. Weekends they get pretty busy, so it's good to make reservations when coming in groups. They have outdoor seating which is really nice when the weather permits (and if it's not already full!), but the inside is just as nice though...cute decor, great music, candles, etc. The service here is ALWAYS good, they are friendly and accommodating. I've never had a problem. My only wish is that we would have discovered this place sooner!!! Pros: Great food, great drinks, great service, great prices! Cons: Busy on weekends, make reservations! more

Disappointed! 7/5/2008

Service is inconsistent and inattentive. more

Great place, doesn't have to be pricy 5/11/2008

This is one of my go-to spots in the neighborhood for just plain good food. The service is friendly and there are enough low price options that it doesn't have to be a lot to get a good meal. more

Good food, didn't disappoint 2/15/2008

Went here for my 1st anniversary. Food was pretty good, service was alright. It was pretty romantic, tables were kind of close together though. I had fish & the chocolate souffle which was awesome. It was good for the price. Hard to find though, the address wasn't in order when we went down the street, it's actually a block up from the street numbers... and kind of hidden. BUT worth it. Pros: good food, great ambiance Cons: close tables more

Great cuisine and service- 2/11/2008

I really like going to Chance and it always makes a great impression on my friends or co-workers. I love to order the crusted salmon which is a treat, and the Chicken Satay. The drinks are mixed well and the service is terrific. I enjoy dining with friends but must say it's hard to resist a warm smile and hello I always get when sitting at the bar. I find the food and staff much to my personal liking and would recommend using this place for any social occassion. Pros: ambience, parking, service, more

Great Bartender and food 1/9/2008

Ignore the bad reviews...they must have been from days of different staff. I have been going to Chance for over 5 months and it is one of the best restaurants on Smith St. The Chilean Sea Bass with spicy miso sauce is fresh, delicious and the best on the menu. Their dim-sum selection is large and of course, tasty. Veggie fried rice is full of fresh veggies, not the ""squared veggie nuggets"" found in other places and it is CHEAP, filling and the best I have eaten anywhere. Every dish is cooked to order and worth the quick wait. The staff is friendly and helpful, and will take care of you. Dining alone? Pull up to the bar to get a drink and dinner from the best bartender on Smith. Frank knows how to pour a ""mean"" martini, ""mash"" a fresh mojito or ""mix and shake"" anything else you can think of. He is also great with menu suggestions, likes to hold a conversation and will take care of your needs. There is also ""Happy Hour"" at the bar on Sunday - Thursday - great way to try new wines or drinks. If you are looking for ""bistro"" Asian food - CHANCE is worth your time. Pros: Bartender, Tasty Food, Delightful Drinks Cons: Can be loud if really busy more

Nice staff, good drinks 9/27/2007

Love their coconut cosmos -- I also thought the appetizers (we didn't eat a whole meal) were pretty good too. The staff was really nice and friendly, and were totally on top of the ball. I'm definitely going back... Pros: Drinks, staff Cons: A little loud with the windows open more

Great restaurant. 5/29/2007

I love it here. The staff is always friendly and the food is good. When you're in Brooklyn you should give it a try. Pros: Delicious food Cons: Small place, packed on Saturday more

Dont take a chance 3/6/2007

Dont go. please save your money. dont go. bad food poor service. no apologies. if u want smith st there so many more. Pros: local Cons: food more

Amazing Service 2/21/2007

We came in on Saturday night about 10 minutes before the kitchen wa supposed to be closed and we were seated promptly and our server asked the kitchen staff to wait while we ordered. The service was amazing and we really enjoyed the ambiance of the place. more

I was a waitress, and this is the first time in my life I have not left a tip. 1/27/2007

Please, please, please go ANYWHERE else on Smith Street. I didn't believe the bad reviews posted here, and I paid the price. I made reservations for 6 people for 9pm on a Saturday night on a friend's suggestion. I was threatened on the phone that if we weren't all there by 9:15, they would give our table away, so we made sure the entire party was there by 9:05 (and most of us were there long before.) We were told it wait would be ""a couple of minutes."" And then we were told it again. And again. And again. And again. Waiting at the bar it took me - no lie - TWENTY minutes to get a glass of friggin' wine because the bartender couldn't be bothered. The short, blond, stoic hostess also couldn't be bothered to make eye contact, let alone apologize for the wait. And honestly, if I'm waiting that long, you better make sure there is a drink in my hand. Finally, FORTY-FIVE MINUTES LATER, we were seated. Why the hell did we make reservations??? ""Thanks for your patience"" everyone kept saying once we were seated. At this point I was so mad all I could mutter was ""Too bad I'm not patient."" The food was good, if you don't count the 3 Chilean Sea Bass bones in one dumpling. Not pleasant. They were out of some of the Pris Fixe options, and forgot to bring out desserts that were ordered. On top of that, the ONE bathroom they have is disgusting (and my friend had to wait - again, no lie - 15 minutes to use it) and one of the servers kicked me in the shin while I was waiting for the table and even didn't apologize. And the salt in the wound? They didn't comp us a damned thing. Skip it. I would have rather stayed home, saved the money, and most importantly, saved myself the sheer aggravation and anger I experienced. This place is a joke. Like the title says, I'm usually a 20%+ tipper as a former waitress, and this was the first time I left absolutely no tip whatsoever. Pros: A couple of dumplings Cons: A couple of dumplings do make up for the crappiest dining experience I have ever had more

two thumbs way down! 9/16/2006

I've eaten at many restaurants in brooklyn - most of them relatively inexpensive (unlike this one) - and I could never say that I had a BAD meal....until now. On a Monday night at dinner time there was only one other table full besides ours, and the waitstaff was rather annoying mostly because they were bored. I ordered some dim sum and when the plate came out, it was not what I ordered, but the waiter tried to pass it off as the same dim sum, hoping that I wouldn't notice. Turns out they had none of those dim sum that was on the menu, nor did they have ingredients for another salad I ordered instead. I ended up paying $33.50 for a plate of lettuce with some yellowish sweet and very sour dressing ,with some flavorless chicken. Pros: neither manhattan Cons: nor brooklyn more

Delicious Fusion 9/14/2006

I'm usually quite suspicious of fusion places- the seemingly interesting explosion of flavors leads to confusion afterwards, I can never remember what I ate and if that was good (Chubo for instance). But Chance is a more comfort-food approach to fusion. The flavors are nicely balanced but strong enough to be discerned in each dish. While the menu reads almost completely ""Chinese"", the spices and mild flavors are French. There are also Thai and Indian influences (the delicoius seafood pancakes with curry). Dim Sum (which were served piping hot) standouts are scallop with mushroom, sea bass with carrot, lobster with spinach and goat cheese. Even the green tea and deserts (spring roll banana, creme brule) are great. And if not for dinner, drinks here are pretty good either. Pros: food, ambience, desert Cons: none so far more
