Best

Finally got to go to casimir with my friends... very nice little bistro on avenue B.... french typical food...

Worst

They tried to fake us out by putting a pile of cooked livers under some lettuce saying it was terrine de foie gras! If that's what their regular terrine de foie gras is, then it's...

Don't go! 6/11/2007

I never liked that place, from the early years, I never found the food was good and I was always shocked how rude the staff is . Never the less I dragged myself for dinner there the other night to celebrate my friend's birthday. We were 7 at the table and NONE of us liked their food. The chicken was dry, the mash was cold, the fish tasted old and every dish was drowned in a ridiculous overwhelming balsamic sauce. On top of it, the service was really bad, especially from the pathetic manager who should seriously consider taking Prozac. I am French and I am embarrassed of their representation of French culture, gastronomy and atmosphere. When we called them on their unprofessional behavior, they acted like rude retarded teenagers, basically telling me to buzz of. \r That night, one friend was sick all night, she thought it was the chicken... Pros: I wish I could find something Cons: food, staff, more

# Be conversational: Write it as if relaying your experience to a good friend.\r # Be specific: Generalities like ""lazy service"" or ""tasty pizza"" leave people wanting more detail.\r # Be yourself: If you're an expert on burgers, let us know. If this is your first-time massage, say so.\r # Be fair: Comparing the city's top French restaurant to a neighborhood taco stand is just silly. more

An Old Standby Continues To Charm 2/8/2007

Casimir is one of those beloved places that East Villagers just dropped by for years. We were always happy with the food, service & ambiance. Nowadays, at least on the weekends, it's a good idea to call ahead for a reservation if you're eating after 8:00pm. Success hasn't spoiled Casimir--on the contrary it is one of the few places that rises to the challenge & has actually become a better restaurant. It has the relaxed feel of a great lounge, good service and excellent food. If you're a fan of wild striped bass make sure to order when available as Casimir gets it fresher & prepares it better than many seafood places. Casimir is a great place for groups of 4-8 as the jazz lounge atmosphere lends itself to hanging out. Plus the reasonable prices won't give you indigenstion afterwards or make bill splitting that much of a chore.\r \r The ONLY drawback continues to be the unattractive outdoor ""garden"" which is basically uncomfotable metal folding chairs on cracked asphalt. Avoid it & stay inside & truly enjoy this enduring & endearing gem.\r \r I'm almost hesitant to rave about Casimir as its success has made it harder for me to get a table but I must give credit where its due! Pros: Food, atmosphere, price, service Cons: outdoor seating area to be avoided more

really good bistro 1/24/2007

I move to the east village about 6 months ago. since I do not cook, I go out every night and had a chance to explore all of the french bistro around. I picked casimir my favorite bistro for its chilled ambiance on week days (week ends are usually crazily packed!), and the habitual great food....The specials are usually delicious, the chicken liver salad is really good, the fois gras is home made and very tasty, the filet mignon is super tender, the lamb is too die for and all of the side orders are highly rcommended (I have a preference for the carrots and the mashed potatoes!). Casimir became my ""cantina"", I go there once a week and I have never been disappointed so far, so hope it will keep this way!!! I will recommend this restaurant to anyone that want good food with no pretention....... Pros: great food Cons: only amex more

Decent bistro, maybe overconfident these days 1/19/2007

I've been going to this place on and off since it opened. It's got great classic bistro atmosphere, but lately i feel like they've gotten sloppy. I had the foie gras terrine the other day and it was bland and a bit ""off"". Scary. I think they just need a fresh perspective in the kitchen. They need some sort of expert chef to come in and give a little jolt to the staff in general. Not that they need to change the menu, but they have been on auto-pilot for too long. Its starting to look a little run down. The menus are tattered and filthy. The butter squares are hard and mis-shapen (recycled?). They are missing that extra little TLC that could really bring them back to SPECIAL. Are they taking lower quality ingredients than in the past? Or trimming things more sloppily? My roasted chicken had too much fat on it.... Does anyone care? It would be nice to feel like the staff really cares.... not feeling that lately. Pros: Classic bistro coziness - good house carafe. Cons: a little tired... lost its spark. more

happy new year 1/1/2007

what a good surprise 12/27/2006

...That's my kind of place...one of the reason you would still go out in the east village....charming, attentive and good bistro food...i went to a party last week invited by a freind and then came back with my girl freind for her Bday...she loved it...i think will be back soon...try the Tuna or the Filet Mignon (rare) with a side order mashed sweet potatoes (coconut)... Pros: good vibe Cons: can be loud on a busy night more

Sorry guys, casimir will stay a comic for ever... even in restauration... 12/13/2006

I went in this restaurant because it had been strongly recommended by an american friend of mine. I was with my girlfriend. The appetizer (escartefigue) was good. especially the oak cheese in balsamic vinegar, it was very good. Then I ate a confit de canard. The matter is... The duck is not confit at all. It has surely been bake for long hours to be so dry... Another thing some kind of weird... But first you have to know that I am French. The waiter was french he spoke french with friends of him, looked very french, and had a strong french accent. I try to talk french with him... There were nothing to do, he didn't say a hell word in french. Bizarre. personality complexity.... Pros: restaurant, ambience Cons: Service, food more

exquisite 11/28/2006

I have never wrote a review for a restaurant in my entire life but today that I am to marry my beloved future husband and I am compelled to talk about this little bistro in the east village where one monday night 5 years ago I met the man i will spend the rest of my life with. Monday nights are usually a drag in most restaurant but CASIMIR is the only bistro i know where people from the neighborhood like to spend time, enjoy a glass of wine and a tasty dinner at a very reasonnable price. The ambiance was (and is still )charming with its dimmed lights, its enchanting jazz, classical or ethnic music ( better than the usual piaf or trenet that i respect but do not really enjoy in most french restaurant where i feel that is what they need to make their bistro a french one!), its ""branche"" waitresses. I fell in love there because to my sense everything was perfect. I go back there often and have never been disappointed. Thank you CASIMIR.....whoever you are!!!!!! more

should be protected like a rare specimen 11/13/2006

Pros: can't think of going anywhere else with my friends Cons: can't think of going anywhere else with my friends more

Charming, organic and excellent...good hearthy wine buy the glass under $8 no wonder casimir is still a must with a big brasserie menu and always good daily specials. Eat and share the vibe that's what is all about. Pros: organic and wellcome Cons: avoid when overcrowded more

TRENDY! 7/5/2006

I have been to Casimir many times. Trendy is the one word I would use to describe it. Bar service is always great. Wait service is good and bad. You'lll get your food, but you mightened get a smile! There is usually a good, buzzy atmosphere at night and there has always talent. Nice ambience, good food. It is quite pricey, but the duck dish is worth it. As a treat, it is well worth a try. Pros: Great atmosphere, good food, great bartenders Cons: Wait service, seating can be cramped. more

Below average food - worst service 6/10/2006

This restaurant used to be pretty decent. Over time, the food quality has decreased substantially, it is a lot less crowded than it used to, and the service must definitely be part of the reason. Everything, from the soft bread, soggy salad, and 50 minute wait time, with an incredibly rude service to deliver below average food. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Oh yes, and they lie on the phone, claiming they have seating in the garden, then of course the seats are not available. Cons: Service - Below Average Food - Uncomfortable seats more

Good food so-so service 6/2/2006

I have been to Casimir over 5 times and I have always had a great time there. The food is great and reasonably priced. I have tried to make reservations, but both times, the hostess didn't have my name. If the weather is nice, try to snag an outside table. The staff has been nice, but they seemed really stressed and the unisex bathroom needs to be cleaned more often. Pros: Great food, outdoor space Cons: cramped, one bathroom more

Good place, weird crowd 5/30/2006

I've been there a few times, and I usually end up sitting next to some pretty odd people. Odd for Ave B, not just odd, The place attracts an eclectic crowd to say the least. Aside from the bearded, courdoroy blazer professor type with the NYU student he's sleeping with that week, you see a strange mix of hipsters, frat boys, Will Smith types who need to be told they are black, bitter cougars who cant understand why they arent married yet.... Just an odd group. Anyway, the food is good, the price is right and they have a decent wine list. So, if yo really don't care who is sittingnext to you, which is about 2 inches away, I would say try it. Pros: food, price, neighborhood Cons: crowd, seating more

delicious food, good specials 11/19/2005

Casimir is almost always packed, but I've never had to wait more than 15/20 minutes for a table. Though you will undoubtedly be seated at a table with what seems like barely enough room (no matter what the size of your party), the warm atomosphere is worth the cramped quarters- you'll have fun and forgot about the tight spot you're in. The waitstaff are all very busy, it's not outstanding service, but I've never been dealt with rudely. Of course the reason its so packed is because the food is so delicious! I've had oysters, lamb, steak, and duck- all were well-prepared and tender. The specials are usually quite good too. Great romantic place for a date (try to get the corner booth table for a little privacy and to sit close!). Pros: Delicious French food, Romantic Cons: Cramped more
