True Seattle in Lake City 10/10/2009

Quality breakfast at reasonable prices and real people to wait on you make this place confortable and unassuming. A lot like home, it's a great place to have breakfast. Great service without pretensiousness. Pros: great breakfast, genteel digs, cozy too more

Two thumbs up 10/27/2008

Down to earth, small town villiage aura, feels like a real life scene from ""Northern Exposure."" Atmosphere reads like an antique mall-meets-mom's fridge, complete with family photos and child art. Many choices of omlettes, great hash browns that are cooked just right, and seriously THE BEST WATER. I know it seems strange to say that, but most places really do have awful tap water, but this is clear cold excellent tasting water--I can't help but praise them every time (they don't even use a filter--amazing). Staff always coming around with coffee refills. It can get pretty crowded, but we've always been acknowledged right away. Some staff can seem tired (you would be too with those crowds), but never rude. Make sure you're hungry, or else plan to take some home for your lunch. No pretense at a place like this--just a griddle in the back, making them just like you would at home. Some may think it's a little greasy, but hey, what's a down-home diner without a little grease? Probably hard to seat a table more than 4 folks. Wish there were more like this to replace the chains across the states. Pros: homey cozy atmosphere, hungryman portions, great water Cons: possible wait (gets busy), limited fruit selection more

Best breakfast value you'll find in the city 7/4/2008

I know, people always say, 'this is the best', but I've eaten breakfast at about thirty spots in Seattle and this has definitely got the best price-to-value ratio. If you didn't mind forking out twenty or thirty bucks a plate you might get better, but this is still the best hollandaise sauce in town for any price, and you will get an excellent, high-quality breakfast here for ten bucks or less. The Welsh eggs are particularly tasty, to the point I find it difficult to get anything else when I come by. Home fries are cooked just right, a little crispy but tender in the center. Most everything you'll get here is relatively simple fare, cooked as well as you could possibly expect it to be. There are a couple of caveats: the waitress/owner isn't a suckup, so if you're one of those people who goes out expecting to be kowtowed to, try somewhere else; and decor is basically 'kitsch Americana', so if you're a diner who likes a certain 'nouveau atmosphere' there are other places to go. But if what you want is a great breakfast at a great price, go no further. It's essentially a small-town breakfast joint on the outskirts of the big city. Pros: Great breakfast for a great value, a slice of small town in the city Cons: Perhaps not the best choice for a certain brand of 'cosmopolitan' more

Best. Breakfast. Ever. 8/31/2007

There is no better place to eat breakfast in Seattle...this place puts Denny's to shame. \r \r The staff is a bit eccentric, but if you are a normal person who does not expect to be treated like royalty in a mom and pop place, you will do just fine here. The staff knows my family by name and remembers our ""regulars"", which are served promptly and always delicious. If you enjoy a home cooked meal in an eclectic atmosphere, this place is for you. If I could afford it, I would eat there every day!\r \r \r \r Pros: FOOD! Cons: Can be crowded on weekends more

Worst dining experience of my life. 6/18/2007

I was in oogmar's party, the other vegetarian and food service-worker, and this was easily the worst restaurant I've ever had the displeasure of going to. \r Upon asking for my meal with one minor adjustment (a slice of tomato instead of the Canadian bacon), our waitress cut me off and told me ""Okay, sweetheart? The more you add to the order, the longer this is going to take."" She made it clear that our satisfaction wasn't worth her time or effort. She was loud and bossy, we could overhear conversations between the wait staff (about other customers), it took ages to be seated and served, and parts of the meal never came. My food was served cold and the eggs were undercooked. Our friend had an animal hair in his already dry and tasteless scone.\r When an (extremely professional) note to the management was written on the back of our bill detailing our experience, oogmar walked outside to wait for the rest of the party to join her. Our waitress took the bill and our card, and then returned (still holding the card, but hadn't run it yet) to tell us to tell our friend never to come back again, and that our experience wasn't her fault (never mind the fact that she still hadn't gotten parts of the meal that we'd reminded her about no less than four times). She then started to talk about my friend's horrible behavior, to /me/, as if I'd be receptive to that information. At that point, she should have been apologizing and offering a refund, but she had the audacity to complain about a member of our party, instead.\r The entire place was dirty (I was seated next to a picture on the wall, there were trails of clean where people had wiped the dust off of it) and unprofessional, the waitress was horrible and interrupted conversation on a regular basis with her overbearing behavior and loud demands to the kitchen, making every wait seem even longer, and there wasn't space enough for the number of people they seated.\r All in all, it was a painful experience. Don't go here. Pros: Absolutely none. Cons: Hard to park, wait took ages, rude staff, dirty atmosphere, sub-par and unclean food. more

Be careful with being honest here. Ever. 6/18/2007

My friends and I decided to stop by this place on our way home from a good weekend out. We really chose badly on this one. The service was absolutely horrendous. Slow and innaccurate to begin with, the waitress was also rude and delivered our meals incompletely (one should not have to remind a server even once that they need part of their meal, let alone three or four times). \r \r \r \r The food was not stellar for its price (8.75 for a badly prepared omelette? At a breakfast place? I'm thinking no). When taking our orders, we were very rudely reminded that ""the more you add to a meal, the longer it will take."" My friend, a vegetarian, wanted a tomato instead of bacon on her eggs benedict. I ordered the vegetarian omelette, making it equally clear that I'm also a vegetarian, and the very tardy food had sausage in the first quarter, which I picked out without complaint.\r \r \r \r The last straw wasn't waiting a half an hour to be seated, a half an hour to be served, or an hour for the food to actually show up, or the waitress clearly not caring whether or not she did her job correctly. The last straw was the hair cooked into the hard, dry scone. \r \r \r \r When I wrote a note for the management expressing my displeasure with our experience and requesting them to contact me, the waitress threw a fit and 86'd (banned) me. So not only would I never, ever return to this sad excuse for a restaurant, I'm not allowed to. All for a little honesty.\r \r \r \r Two of the people in our party have worked in the food service industry for our entire working careers, and both of us understand the demands of a good eating experience. Not a single one of these demands were met, or even attempted to be met. If you want a finer dining experience, I'm sure McDonald's has a restaurant somewhere in Lake City. You will find better service, food, and prices there. Pros: None that I can think of. Cons: Terrible waitstaff, Bad cooks, Bad wait times, Mediocre food, Overpriced for what you're getting. more

Would not recommend this place 6/6/2007

Based on being fair...the place was dirty and the floors were unclean and certain employees/managers were loud and rude and gossiped about other people. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Cons: dirty, customer service rude not friendly more

great food and friendly staff 4/17/2007

the service is friendly food is great and the atmosphere makes you feel like home. everything is homemade not from a food service. the gravy and corn beef are to die for. Pros: good food, cool waitresses, feels like home Cons: no out front parking more

No. 2/23/2007

I expect very little from a 'hole-in-the-wall' cute ma and pa cafe. The Breakfast Club delivers far less. Mediocre food at the very best. Slow (seated at least 20 min before we received our coffee), rude (very awkward to hear staff conversations belittling other customers), and poor service (order was wrong; never fixed). My wife and I are a 5 min walk from this place and will NEVER go back. One of our worst dining experiences ever. Seriously. No, seriously. In fairness, the final incident occurred several months ago. Still mad. Still never going back. Pros: I never have to go back. Cons: I went more than once. more

disappointing 6/17/2005

This restaurant is tiny and packed with vintage collectibles. Cute. The food and service, however, weren't cute. I expected basic inexpensive breakfast grub - eggs, pancakes, omelettes. And it is inexpensive. However, the eggs were undercooked, the bacon was flavorless, and the potatoes were mushy. My son ordered orange juice and was served apple. The server also dropped one of our english muffins on the way to the table, and then she failed to replace it. It was nearly impossible to get her attention, so these issues never got fixed. We won't be going back. Word to the wise: this teensy place is a SMOKING restaurant, with no non-smoking seating. Even if said seating existed, the restaurant is so small that there's no escaping the cigarette smoke. Keep this in mind if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke. Pros: inexpensive, lots to look at Cons: smoking, bad service, unimpressive food more
