If you have to choose one restaurant to go to in San Francisco, it should be Boulevard. Boulevard is...

Good Experience 8/27/2005

After reading multiple reviews of Boulevard, I was hesitate about dining there for our wedding anniversary, but our dining experience turned out great. Making a reservation a week in advance for a weekday was easy and the person taking reservations was courteous. We were seated within 10 minutes of arriving and the hostess seated us at the best table available (back of restaurant is less noisy) given our ""special occasion."" Our waiter was extremely nice, patient, and not at all snooty. Most importantly, our food was excellent and well prepared. I was anticipating starving based on prior complaints/reviews about small portions, but I was completely stuffed at the end of dinner! Finally, to our surprise, our dessert came decorated with a chocolate stating ""Happy Anniversary!"" We would definitely consider returning to Boulevard next year! Pros: excellent food, great service, nice decor Cons: moderately noisy more

Cut above 8/3/2005

I only joined City Search to be able to refute the utterly rediculous review about snotty service written by someone who obviously does not recognize quality. Granted, we all want to be made to feel special, especially when paying a high price, but honestly, are we really looking for an interpersonal realtionship with our waiter to make the evening? This restaurant is fantastic in every respect. I am from NY and have visited Boulevard several times and always been treated respectfully and warmly. The food is so elegant that some people may not 'get it.' It is understated and non-showy. If you want a show, go to the theatre. If you want a truley elegant mean, served by professionals go to Boulevard. And try having a conversation with your dinner companion. Pros: food, diversity of menu, lighting Cons: I live out of town more

Not worth the hype, or the money 8/1/2005

Had this been a $15 an entree meal in the Sunset District, it would have been passable. But this was Boulevard. The staff was inexcusably snooty and the food mediocre. A noisy room completed the picture of a restaurant that rested on the laurels of its accolades, failing to deliver either a good experience or a meal memorable for anything other than its mediocrity. The only benefit to the inept and pushy service was that we left in mercifully short order, apalled. Cons: uninspired food, pushy inept waitstaff more

Wonderful evening 5/23/2005

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful, romantic dinner at Boulevard in mid-April. We are both ""foodies"" and found this place to be exceptional. The service was first-class, knowledgeable and accomodating without being the least bit pretentious or stuffy. Every course of our meal was incredible. They are so accomodating, in fact, that just last week I emailed the restaurant and requested that a menu be mailed to me so we may display in our home (as we do with menus from our favorite restaurants) and they promptly dropped one in the mail, no questions asked. I highly recommend Boulevard to anyone travelling through (or living in!) San Francisco, it's an experience not to be missed. more

An Amazing Dining Experience 3/7/2005

All around an incredible dining experience this Valentine's Day. In all honestly, I found myself thinking about each bite and how the chef (Oakes) chose each of the ingredients so perfectly to make the flavors complement and elevate each other. You can tell the restaurant was well managed and all the wait staff was warm and helpful. By request, we actually got one of the tables for two in the back with a bay view that made our evening that much more special. more

Lovley resturant, Long wait! 2/16/2005

My roomate and I went out to boulevard upon recommendation my a friend of mine and we made a 9PM reservation...We got there and we wrent seated til about 9:30p granted i dont think they took us seriously because we are young college kids but ive been to nicer places that treat me a little better food was great though..the sweetbreads were nicley prepared and the lobster stuffed prawns were fabulous...and the foi gras was to die for more

Boulevard Doesn't Have It All Together 2/4/2005

Although drawn to the lavishly designed and decorated dining room of Boulevard, I'm consistently disappointed when the food gets served. Savory dishes, such as the quail, seem unbalanced in flavor (e.g. overly robust), although elegantly presented. Desserts are quite good; I like the panna cotta. Haven't tried Boulevard for lunch, but I'd like to save my money for trying more highly-acclaimed, non-Pat-Kuleto-restaurant-empire restaurants. I don't recommend this place highly, but I wouldn't object strongly to going again. Pros: atmosphere/decor, dessert Cons: entrees more

ambrosia 12/22/2004

boulevard deserves every good rating it has received. i was there last week with my husband. it looks lovely decked out in all of its holiday finery so if you are planning to go, try to before the holidays are over. the food was divine. i recommend the shrimp and crab fritters, prawns wrapped in bacon, and the carrot cake (which is unlike any i have tasted before). the service was wonderful. overall, a delightful--i'll even go so far as to say a religious--experience. i can't write one bad thing about this restaurant. Pros: everything more

Excellent! Met expectations. 9/30/2004

My partner and I had our anniversary dinner, with high expectations. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere, decor, food quality, and presentation were excellent. The only downside was the below average waiter service. The food took forever to arrive, which I do not mind as long as the food is good. However, if you do have to wait a long time then the waiter should make sure you have your glasses full and bread on the table. Pros: Food quality, Atmosphere, Romantic more

Rude taking reservation 9/12/2004

First impressions really counts. I would've given Boulevard better ratings has it not been the rude attitude I experienced when calling to confirm my reservation. Other than that, food was marvelous. But the experience wasn't complete due to the unpleasant maitre'd. more

Possibly the best SF Restaurant 8/28/2004

The food is exceptional. This place has always been one of my all-time favorites. Upscale. Amazing dish presentation. Pros: Fantastic Food more

Is This Heaven? No, It's 7/18/2004

Boulevard! This restaurant is a finely tuned machine. Sit at a counter seat for a real show and watch this incredible team at work. I have never seen such attention to detail for food before in my life! The menu changes daily and offers a short selection of starters and entrees. The wine list is expansive and they will happily recommend some reasonably priced choices for your dinner if you aren't a wine connoiseur. This is about as good as it gets. more

Lovely experience 5/18/2004

I took my boyfriend to Boulevard for his bday recently. At the last minute I was scrambling to see if we could go to Fleur de Lys or Gary Danko instead, due to the mixed bag of reviews on this site. We ended up having dinner at Boulevard and were very pleased with the food, ambiance, and service. He had lamb, I had a lobster medley. He didn't order dessert, because he was too full (what's the fuss about small portions?), but the staff still brought him sorbet with a candle. We thought it was very classy indeed. Pros: Menu, Pretty location more

outstanding! 3/30/2004

I have been to BLVD 5 or 6 times now, and its been outstanding every single time. No, its not cheap eats, and the portions are not huge, but its not supposed to be middle american style fare. Its food as art, and it is the best resturant in town. I cannot believe some of the other reviews. I have NEVER left hungry, and the service has always been incrediable. Zagat ranked BLVD #1 and I agree whole-heartedly. The tuna tartare is sensational, none like it anywhere. I go to other resturants on a regular basis, and everytime I spend a good deal of money, I walk away thinking ""I should have gone to BLVD."" more

Dissapointed 12/25/2003

Heard this place was one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. The place was very loud as everyone mentioned and the food was decent but nothing was special. It took 15 min. to get seated with a reservation. And it looks 1 hours and 15 min. for 1 entree (that's all I ordered!) to arrive on my table. The waiter said they had a big group of people downstairs and my order was not misplaced. I did not feel to order a desert because I did not want to waste more time. Pros: decoration Cons: parking, loud, slow more

everything the last review said is true 10/27/2003

couldn't agree more. Good food, but at the prices charged, it should be. And it's noisy. BOY, is it noisy, and busy. But the service was excellent. Poor couple next to us had wine spilled all over them by a busboy. Their 25th anniversary. A 1978 from France. Management? ""Heh, these things happen."" They were finally convinced to drop the corkage fee. Gee whiz. more

Over Hyped 10/21/2003

I have mixed feelings about Boulevard. On one hand, the food is fabulous. On the other hand, it can be very noisy, and some of the tables get a lot of foot traffic passing by. For the price of the meal, I usually enjoy my food at Boulevard, but my experience is marred by the noise and by feeling like the waiters are running around tables constantly. Also, I feel that better dressed patrons are served better. I've gone casually dressed, and dressed in an evening gown, and there was a world of difference in where we were seated and how much attention the staff paid us. So...go for the great food, dress up, and pray for a quiet table. more

Didn't meet expectations 10/6/2003

We went to the Boulevard for dinner on a Saturday night (our last night in SF). We were really excited about it since I made the reservations a few weeks ahead of time and everyone in the hotel and even the taxi driver told us how nice it was. When we got there, it was a different story. Our table (for 2) felt like it was in a traffic zone -- very noisy, with people walking right by all the time. We asked for a different table but were told that the tables in back were for bigger parties and the ones by the window were reserved. Our food was OK, but not the best (my pork was kind of fatty (gross!)) and the portions were very small. The bill, however, was quite large! I wouldn't recommend the place and have to wonder what all the hype is about. Pros: good service Cons: VERY noisy, so-so food, expensive/poor value more

Don't believe the hype 9/23/2003

How common is it for the waitstaff to over look a empty glass of water? One that was empty for a good hour before my party motioned to the waiter for a refill and even after mentioning this...he had forgotten until after he arrived with our bill. We wouldn't have needed water if our food wasn't overcooked and dry to begin with. I'd definitely recommend trying another restaurant over this one. Bad service = horrible experience Cons: Poor service, Sub-par waitlist more

Best restaurant in SF? 8/11/2003

My family seems to think so after many years of fine dining in the city. It's a dead heat on the best ahi tuna tartare/foie gras I've ever had between Boulevard and Aqua. Good company to be in. One anecdote is telling: the rack of lamb here is SO outstanding, I stopped in the middle of my bite and proclaimed to the table, ""Wow. This is REALLY good."" If the lamb is on the menu, and you're a serious meat eater, do yourself -- and your curious tablemates -- a favor and just order it. And come to think of it, we have never had bad service at Boulevard. Not once. Aspiring restaurateurs take note -- excellent waiters here. Pros: Outstanding meat, Exemplary service, Charming decor Cons: Tricky parking more
