Best

This place is not a cafeteria, don't let the name fool you. Great spot for brunch, but it does get crowded. They will do call ahead seating. Pros: FOOD is Great! Service is...

Worst

I went in on a weekday afternoon at around 1 pm to check out this new cafeteria in my neighborhood. Presumably, they would be expecting people at this time of day.

Best Service 11/2/2007

I was in Blue Star a few days ago and what a wonderful place. The atmosphere was great, staff very friendly and attentive and food wonderful. I enjoyed my visit so much that I have made this my local favorite and telling all my friends about this place. I could not have asked for anything more while I was there. Our server was a very nice young lady and pleasant to talk to. She had lots of knowledge of the menu and answered all our questions. The manager that day a very nice lady, I wished we had gotten her name was wonderful with out little boy. She brought him over fruit and crackers while we were waiting for our food. He just loved her, we found out later that she used to take care of children, it showed. The food came out in a timely manner and was great. the flavors were wonderful. I think everyone should give this place a try. Try it you will love it! Pros: little short on parking Cons: service, management, food more

Mediocre with poor service 9/3/2007

After reading the menu and the newspaper's review, my friend and I rushed over for lunch. Were we ever disappointed! The service was very poor, the restaurant was cold, tables were too close, and the food was only mediocre. However, the prices were NOT mediocre -- they were high for what we got. Luby's is much better for comfort food and price. Pros: Diverse menu for Burnet Road Cons: Mediocre food and service, high prices more

Best Everything 8/27/2007

I am a regular at Blue Star and have never taken the time to write a review but after visiting again on Sunday Aug. 26th I thought that I would and should. My experience with Blue Star has always been wonderful, but Sunday it was exceptional. The servers name was Eva and she was on top of everything. We were greeted by the manager on duty at the door and serveral times throughout our stay she stopped by and chatted with us, she introduced herself to us and I can't remember her name ( tall blonde, bright blue eyes). The food once again was very tasty. I am never disappointed with anything at Blue Star and now when I come in they all recognize me and treat me like family. You don't see that much in this business anymore. Thank you Blue Star, staff and management for being in the neighborhood and for making all of us feel like we mean something to you. What a great job you have done with the staff, food and atmosphere. You got it right! The owner should also know that you have a great management team and it reflects in the staff and their service. Pros: great service Cons: lack of parking more

Just loved this place 5/6/2007

We were in there on Friday for lunch and there was about 6 of us. Will was our server. He was absolutely wonderful, he took our order, chatted with us and never miss a beat. Our order was correct when it came out and the food was wonderful. We enjoyed it so very much. We were joking around with the manager on duty that day asking her if there was anyway that Will could join us for lunch he was so much fun and very attentive. He talked 5 out of 6 of us into dessert and we were very glad that we got them. The servers here and the manager are very aware of everything around them. I was amazed by the fact that the manager brought over a refill to one of the ladies at our table and didn't have to ask her what she was drinking, she already knew. It is so light and airy in there also. Even with the rainy weather outside it seemed like the sun was shining brightly in Blue Star. What a gem! We have found a new home. Thanks! Pros: service more

I am getting on the band wagon 5/6/2007

I have to agree with the lastest review. I was also in Blue Star today for Brunch and what a great place. I had never been there before and I had read the reviews and I am very glad that I didn't let them stop me from trying it. This has now become my favorite place to eat. I can't wait to try dinner. The staff was very friendly and took very good care of us from the time that we entered the door to the time that we left. The host and the manager both open the door for us when we entered and left, we actually made a joke about it because it kind of made us feel like royalty. Most restaurants don't have all those little touches that make you feel special. Our server was a young lady named Mara and what a pleasure she was very attentive to myself, husband and my little boy, even the manager came by and play with our son. It is all these little things that make Blue Star so great. I don't think that the management or the owner has anything to worry about. This place is going to be a huge success because it has everything going for it from the food to the service. THANK YOU for being in our neighborhood. Pros: service and kid friendly more

What are you talking about? 5/6/2007

It sounds to me like some of these people who have written reviews don't know what they are talking about. I was there just today for Sunday brunch and what a fantastic place. The service was excellent. The food was wonderful and I have a 2 year old son and the staff was great with him, even the manager on duty came by and was playing with him and he just loved her. I think that Blue Star got a bad rap in the beginning because someone just decide to have a bad day, because we go here every week at least once and it has never been anything but wonderful from the food to the service. We enjoy this restaurant and hope that anyone reading these reviews will realize that these are only peoples opinions and some people might have been having a bad day and decided to take it out on the restaurant. Try it! You will like it! more

Worse dining experience in Austin! 5/5/2007

This has to be the worst experience I've ever had in Austin. We went to dinner on Friday night with our very quiet and well behaved 3 year old. We were seated and the waiter immediately wanted to take our order. We stated that we needed some time to review the menu and then he asked about appetizers. He suggested the artichoke heart dish. I ordered the grapefruit coctail which was good. After a short time he brought the appetizer and wanted to take our order. I couldn't help but wonder if we were being rushed because we had a child with us even though she hadn't made a peep. My husband asked about the quail and he said he didn?t recommend it, which we appreciated. The only problem was that he recommended the burger. Since we didn?t want a burger, he had a more difficult time with the selections. If this is a burger joint, then don?t have other items on the menu. The artichoke hearts were over seasoned and mediocre. In 5 minutes...no joke...our food arrives. The waiter wanted my wine order but I only had my coctail for 10 minutes and had most of it left. I ordered the trout salad. It was also mediocre...it was so heavy on the lemon rind I could barely taste the trout. My daughter?s grilled cheese arrived 3 minutes after ours and the cheese wasn?t even melted. The only good thing about the experience is that we didn't pay for it because it was a gift certificate given to us by a friend. The manager wouldn?t allow us to pay the tip out of the gift certificate so we still have money left...I guess this forces you to go back. I'll only be going back for wine because the food is a complete waste of money. It's a shame this is in our neighborhood because there are so many amazing restaurants in this city but this is NOT one of them. I'm not sure how they've stayed in business this long. Pros: Grapefruit Coctail Cons: Food, service, ambience & overall experience more

TERRIBLY AWFUL- ONE OF THE WORST 4/26/2007

isn't it strange that so many of us feel that kids are not welcome here? what does this place expect of its customers? single snooty folks? it definitely does not have the food or service to be snubbing kids. i just have to say, please pass this place up. terrible terrible TERRIBLE service. the waiter passed us by so many times without making eye contact and forgetting several things that we needed. i had the fish, which was nothing to write home about. this place is yuck. Cons: Terrible service, Non kid friendly, Food is mediocre, if even..... more

Menu looked ok, food was horrible, service was worse....excuse me what did you say??? 4/23/2007

This place is LOUD. The designer forgot about any acoustic material so sound smashes against the cement floor and bangs into the glass and metal ceiling, and off the windows.... it's casual yes, but wouldn't you want patrons to your ""upscale"" cafeteria to be able to talk to one another? Pros: location Cons: everything else more

great grilled cheese 3/27/2007

I like this cute little restaurant. They immediately catch your eye when you walk in the front door with the dessert case filled with yummy delectibles. I had the grilled cheese sandwich, which had 3 cheeses and a side of some kind of sweet marmalade. I loved it! Pros: location, food, cute more

Wonderful Experience 3/22/2007

Blue Star Cafeteria... What a delightful place. We were there on St. Patrick's Day evening around 7:30 and they had Irish music playing, Cornbeef and Cabbage and Fish and Chips, they offered us an Irish beer. We were in heaven. Kudos to the Chef for the Cornbeef and Cabbage and the fish and chips they are the best in town. To make our experience even more delightful our server was wonderful, very attentive and a joy to talk too. I have read the reviews and have got to say that some of these people don't know what they are talking about. For other review readers, don't let some of the reviews keep you from trying Blue Star out, you will be pleasantly surprised. The entire evening was great. At some point during our visit the manager stopped by our table and asked us how our food and service were and we told her they were wonderful. This just added another personal touch that you don't get from so many other restaurants. Thank you Blue Star staff and management for making our St. Patrick's Day wonderful. Pros: Great service and food Cons: short on parking more

Glad your in the neighborhood 3/16/2007

I have been into Blue Star serveral times in the past month and I have got to say that the food is wonderful and the service matches. Servers were very friendly and very attentive. I have on occassion had the chance to talk to Kim who is one of the managers and I understand why the staff is so attentive and seem to enjoy their job. Kim is very friendly and welcomes everyone into Blue Star with a smile and makes sure that they are all taken care of. I wish that when I owned my restaurant in California that I had a manager and staff like this. I would and do recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family. Kim and the staff go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy your meal and will want to come back. I will continue to support Blue Star and hope that they will be around for a long time. Pros: great atmosphere and service Cons: tight parking more

""NOT NEVER"" 1/21/2007

I was shocked to see this restaurant listed as one of the city?s top ten. The food was okay but pricey. The desserts were stale, costly, and, unlike many restaurants in town, not large enough to be shared by two. My favorite experience was the wait staff member, who reminded all at the table of the actress from Saturday Night Live (Victoria Jackson ? some time ago, right?), who could not explain menu items. She defined them as what they were not. Her explanation of coconut chess pie was hilarious. By the way, it didn?t taste like coconut. Restaurant is extremely loud. I will not venture there again. As our waitperson would likely say --- ?not never.? Pros: parking, location Cons: food, service, noise more

Best meatloaf ever! 1/14/2007

The meatloaf and mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy was one of the best meals I have ever had! I thought the prices were very fair and I look forward to trying more items on the menu. Pros: great food Cons: a little loud more

Fun atmosphere and tasty food! 1/3/2007

I wish I lived in this area of town because Blue Star would be one of my regular stops. Cafeteria style dishes with a twist. It's not a real cafeteria thank god. This place is hip and cool on the interior. Not sure what some of the other reviewers are whining about. Our food was great. We have eaten there several times now. Try the crispy chicken which is my favorite. Also the fish is really good. Rosedale should embrace this fun new place. Me and my wife love it. Pros: great food and interior design Cons: nothing notable more

So So Food 12/4/2006

I stopped in for lunch at opening. The food was so so. Not great, not bad. The wait staff seemed to have an attitude and the service was just ok. This place needs alot of work. I may try them again in the future to see if it is improved. Pros: none really Cons: wait staff attitude more

Avoid. Period. 12/2/2006

Unless you are one of the young, beautiful people, this place (along with at least Santa Rita) need to be avoided. At least in our experience at ***both*** places. Have kids? You are not welcome in the least. They could've been at least respectful at bs and kicked us out early, but we suffered through horrendous service, first. Pros: location Cons: everything but location. Can someone please put a decent place here? more

The name is misleading! 12/1/2006

My boyfriend and I were looking for a new place to eat and found you guys on austin360 online. It was easy to find, a little small, but cute! Love the colors inside! I had the chicken, mashed potatos and spinach with a glass of white wine and was blown away! It was all very tasty. The word 'cafeteria' doesn't fit! Nothing reminded me of a cafeteria. The service was good, not great. We have already been back once and do plan to visit again! Pros: not too pricey Cons: service is nothing exceptional more

Pleasant Experience 11/16/2006

My first visit to Blue Star was a pleasant one. Menu is cute, need few more vegetarian selections, but new and exciting nonetheless. Long counter is great for quick dining. The staff was v helpful and offered to let me use their phone when I did not have mine. Innovative decor. Pros: Hip interior, no long wait for table Cons: Tables spaced close together more

The Most Insulting Dining Experience I Have Ever Had 11/14/2006

This was the most humiliating and unhappy dining experience I have ever had. Recently I was in this restaurant with other disabled individuals and it was obvious that we were not welcome. We were refused access to the restrooms. We were also treated badly by the wait staff and our food was undercooked (ground beef). We were seated at a dirty table and when an accident happened it was cleaned up with a dirty towel and the debris dropped into our laps. Even after asking help from three people for the restroom we were ignored. When asked to speak to someone in charge we were laughed at again and ignored. We were refused the opportunity talk with a manager. This was a terrible experience and we won't go back. We are disappointed that this restaurant is in our great neighborhood where many blind, deaf and other disabled people live. We observed that childen are not welcome and the families were treated very badly when they went to this restaurant. It is not a place I would recommend. Cons: Crude treatment of individuals with disabilities and uncooked food. Children not welcome. more
