Worst Catering Ever 1/5/2012

Food is nothing special. If you want to go there go ahead, but do NOT allow them to cater any event for you unless you are ready for total disregard for manners and complete lack of concern for the client. They do have the worst customer service inside and out -- for sure. more

I frequent often. 8/23/2011

I agree completely that the customer service can stink, but hey, its worth it. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the soup nazis kitchen in Seinfeld, but the food it incredible. And that's why I'm there--b/c they know how to cook great barbeque, cabbage, mac'n'cheese, collards, and beans. I haven't tried the other things except the brunswick stew, which I found way too sweet for my taste. The atmosphere is something I love about the place--every other place in the area (it feels) is a chain restaurant. And any barbeque that smells like a campfire when you pull up is the kind of place for me! I can't emphasize enough how good this place is--and on a final note, their pork is so good on its own that you don't need sauce. \r \r Now, if you own this place, open one in Holly Springs so I don't have to drive so far! :) more

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!! 7/26/2011

I ate there a while ago. The food was okay. The customer service is the worst. I asked one worker for a take out box and I thought he was going to explode. The cashier was very unfriendly and had a scowl on his face. I will NEVER eat from this place again. The service alone is enough to never make me want to go back. That was my first and last time going there. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! more

Very fine eastern NC bbq 5/26/2011

The bbq was quite good, as were the sides. Perhaps the best we've had in Durham. Service was friendly and attentive. The downside is the interior, badly in need of renovation. It may be clean, it may be sanitary, but that's not the impression left by the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. more

Poor Customer Service... 4/5/2011

Poor customer service. After countless unanswered emails and phone calls to Donald Cozart in trying to get a receipt from previous catering - to date - NO RESPONSE. I will not be using them to cater any events again - Terrible.. more

Just WOW!!! 9/11/2010

I have been searching for good BBQ in my immediate area....I finally found it. Not only is the BBQ excellent, and without much fat, but the sides are just as good. I have tried other BBQ restaraunts in this area....the BBQ may have been good, but the portions were so small and the price sooo steep, not even worth it. Backyard BBQ in Durham has it all, and the price is very reasonable. If your looking for good BBQ please check 'em out...it's worth the drive. more

My friend and I got sick 10/5/2009

My friend and I both got take out from backyard BBQ and ate it immediately. The BBQ and collards were fantastic, but I don't think they keep their steam table hot enough, because both of us had upset stomachs all that night. Pros: great bbq Cons: upset stomach all night more

Great place for some good ol Pit BBQ 9/3/2009

OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: The best BBQ I've ever tasted Cons: No Draw backs more

BBQ and it's Best 6/3/2009

Backyard with it's family operation is quite simply the best food and atmosphere in the area. From good ol' boys, construction workers, RTP folks, families, NC visitors, all races, colors, sizes and ages....all there for fine, pulled pork and all the 'fixin's. Family members greet you as a sister, cousin, distant relative just stopping by for a visit and dinner/lunch/takeout. Their signature, or rather YOUR signature on the wall leaves a bit of 'hi' there for the family to see and read and for YOU to see when you return. SMILES all around. From the first big hi from the woman at the steam table, to the 'drive safe' from the guy taking out the trash as you leave you feel that down home WELCOME and welcome again at the Backyard BBQ. Pros: Don't go any further than of I-40 Hwy 55/54 Cons: Parking a bit cozy more

great durham bbq 11/4/2008

we're so pleased to have this place on our doorstep! Great bbq that I've had so far....the only reason I give it a 4 star, is that I don't think I've tried enough BBQ places to compare it to. \r Their ribs are the best, everything tastes so good - pulled pork, bbq chicken, fall off the bone meat! I can't get my husband out of that place when we eat there. You got to have the mac and cheese and yams.....our mouths water just talking about this place... more

This is where REAL food is! 7/5/2008

Backyard BBQ is the absolute best restaurant in Durham! And I say ""best restaurant"", and not just ""best BBQ"", because EVERYTHING on the menu is delicious! From their beef ribs to the smothered pork chops to the BBQ to the macaroni and cheese, I can't get enough. Only my wife's enforced diet prevents me from eating here everyday. The customer service is the best. The food is the best. What more can you ask for? Pros: Ribs, Pork Chops, Macaroni&Cheese, BBQ, Stewed Potatoes Cons: Parking Lot... can get very crowded sometimes and hard to find a spot. more

It may not be West Tennessee Bar b que, but it sure taste like it! 6/19/2008

I am from West Tennessee and have partied at ""Memphis in May"" where bar b que is a serious business. Your status in the community is weighted by how well that you can smoke a pig in West Tennessee. Backyard bar b que is so good that they may need to move to TN and run for Governor. I am happy to say that I have a slice of home in my neighborhood. Please stop by this place a take a taste of Tennessee even though I think they have North Carolina roots. Pros: Great food, very kind service, wide selection more

Best barbeque in Durham! 6/4/2008

My husband and I have sampled all of the barbeque restaurants in Durham and this is our favorite! The pork barbeque has great flavor, even without the delicious sauces, and they offer a wide variety of side items. My favorite side dishes were the fried cabbage and macaroni and cheese. There was friendly serivce at the counter and our drinks were refilled several times as we ate. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great barbeque in Durham. Pros: flavor of barbeque and sauces, tasty sides more

Respect for you and the food 4/9/2008

I was greeted with a warm hello and a big smile. Then my nose guided my eyes to the counter of food. A quick review of the menu and I decided to get the rib dinner with greens and fried cabbage, which also came with hush puppies (or rolls). \r \r The ribs are smoked to near perfection in, obviously the backyard, and were served wet. The collard greens were slightly sweet, vinegary, and salty but balanced out nice. Possibly the best greens I have had as far as flavor goes. The fried cabbage is also seasoned similarly. I probably should have picked one of them and tried the mac and cheese. \r \r I would definately recommend giving it a try. Only open till 8pm so don't miss a good meal when you are near 40 and 55. \r \r I would give 8/10 for my first dinner but I did take-out so it probably would have been better to just sit down and eat there. They even give you a free drink and refills I think. But I will be going back and will let you know how it goes. \r \r Pros: Quality, Value, Politeness Cons: Not much parking, hard to spot, more

Best BBQ - Lean meat, smoked in a real pit behind the restaurant 3/29/2008

Great bbq. Among the top 2 in the Triangle, could be a tied for first. It's one of the few places where the bbq is cooked with real wood and it's cooked on site. They had good quality meat and it was wonderfully seasoned and it didn't have the chunks of gristle and skin I'd had with other bbq plates. All lean meat. I went back with a friend and had the ribs. The ribs great too. Wonderfully smoked. The sides are good too, the fried cabbage was new to me. It was great.\r \r I wish they served beer.\r \r Pros: Awesome BBQ. Smoked on site with real wood. Very nice people. Cons: They don't serve beer. more

Old-time barbeque and Grandma-like sides for a great price 3/19/2008

Nothing you can see from Highway 55 or even from in front of the steam table tells you how homemade the food is here. The chopped pork is perfectly textured and spiced and piled high on the bun. The sides include Grandma-tasting macaroni and cheese, stewed potatoes (hunks of real potato stewed with lots of onions and pepper, almost like potato soup), dark and slightly sweet Brunswick stew, fried cabbage, and collard greens. Hushpuppies are the best I've had of dozens of barbeque places (knocking Q-Shack out of first place). Tea is really good. Portions are substantial, prices are more than fair, and it's clean. If there's better chopped pork and country sides, I haven't seen it yet. I can think of nothing I'd change about what I've eaten in my four visits there. Pros: Everything's homemade, easy parking, clean, cheap Cons: It's counter service, so service is polite but not really friendly more

Great Down Home BBQ! 3/6/2008

I just came from down home, hole in the wall, bar-b-que heaven! The Backyard BBQ Pit is a family owned small business. Their self identified style (from their web page) is ""...away from the traditional commercial style of cooking and have taken back to the old way of doing things. Just like in Grandma's kitchen."" In fact, my take on the Backyard BBQ Pit is that eating there is like going to someone's home, who really, really knows how to bar-b-que. The sides I selected, greens and fried cabbage (give it at try it's AWESOME), were mouth watering. I will be back as soon as possible, with my husband in tow. He's been wanting to find a place that serves beef ribs for a while, which many bar-b-que places do not. The Backyard Barbque Pit does. If you plan to give it a try, be aware that the Backyard Barbque Pit is closed on Saturday and Sunday. Pros: Qualtiy of food, friendly service, ultra casual atmosphere Cons: Closed Saturdays and Sundays more
