I trained here for a year and experienced conditions and coaching that I found to be very unsafe and inappropriate. I would not recommend that anyone train here, but I ESPECIALLY ...

Editorial review from Citysearch 11/26/2012

I was a member of 24 hour fitness for six months. I liked many things about it, but found myself getting bored and my motivation flagging. The trainers there were great for motivating and guiding me but cost over $60/hour. I just couldn't afford them. more

Great Operation! 7/21/2011

What a bummer to see reviews faulting a business for the inability to manage ones own finances. The reason gyms and others set up direct debit for an account is for convenience and efficiency. These are probably the same people who would complain if a gym didn't have that option...anyway. I've taken both Kenpo and Muay Thai in the past across several dojos in Boston, NYC and Sydney. While I enjoyed those disciplines, I found after taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for several months...I wish I found it sooner! After 4 short months I've lost 21 lbs, my lower back no longer hurts because my core (abs) strength is the best its ever been. In great shape and learning valuable skills. The best part of Alive MMA (aside from their world class BJJ) is the modularity of the operation. You can do such a wide range of martial arts and Cross-fit classes. Its like the Swiss army knife of gyms - something for everybody. Since I joined, my wife, son (5.5 yrs) and daughter (3 yrs) have also joined. Pop in and check it out! more

Watch Out. These guys are only in it for the money. 7/11/2011

These guys don't care about anything but money. I had a similar experience with my contract and inability to continue to train there. They continued to take money out of my account and threatend me with collections. I hope Alive MMA wakes up and listens to these concerns. Do not sign a contract unless you have absolute job security. Compare other mma/bjj outfits before you commit. more

Buyer Beware! Contract More Ruthless than the Fighters. 6/27/2011

This is not a place you want to enter a contract with. I only have myself to blame but I went to one class after signing on the bottom line and then had some financial hardships hit me such as my car breaking down and other bills stacking up ect. The guys did finally cancel my membership only after they grabbed a couple hundred dollars out of my account and now I don't have a bank to bank with. I informed them of this and pleaded with them to reverse the charges. They did not and stuck to their guns. They made out and I'm the fool. I have trained at places all over the US and have never seen people act this way to someone who hit hard times. They don't care if you loose your job. A contract is a contract so beware. Also I know that there are gyms in this area that handel these unforseen situations much better so check arround. There are places that will work with you if the economy kicks your butt. more

Best MMA Gym in PDX 6/22/2011

I've been training at Alive for about a year and a half now and I absolutely love it. Most days, the schedule is packed from 5:30am to after 10pm with boxing, MMA, jiu-jitsu, CrossFit, self-defense, wrestling, and yoga classes. There even used to be a ""Midnight MMA"" class, which, while it isn't currently on the schedule, gives you some idea of how much training flexibility you can have at Alive. The coaches are super knowledgeable, friendly, and able to meet you where you are (anywhere from ""just want a workout"" to ""looking to go pro"") and support you in your goals. I especially appreciate that so many coaches are able to both verbally explain how and why certain techniques are done, as well as demonstrate and run drills for these moves. *Basically, the training you get at Alive is both elegant and ass-kicking.* And since Alive has so many members, in any given class you'll have the opportunity to train with many different kinds of fighters: old and young, amateur and experienced, female and male, big and small, etc. Membership includes access to sauna, weights/ exercise equipment, boxing equipment, the mats and cage, and lots of space to train in. The community, facilities, and class offerings are excellent-- training at Alive MMA has been life changing. I cannot recommend it enough. more

A life changing choice ! 1/15/2011

I came to Alive 2 years ago at 245lbs. A ex high school wrestler looking for something to save me from a downward spiral of fast food and self indulgence. All it took was one class to re ignite the passion for competition and the drive to push myself to new levels every time I step on the mat. With a class schedule ranging from 7:30 am to 9:30pm (and sometimes even later) I can always find a few hours to steal away for myself despite having a close family and running a business. I now am 160lbs and in the best shape of my life. There are classes to fit every persons personal goals. With the addition of Crossfit Woodstock and Alive Boxing they have a full spectrum of instruction for the stay at home mother of four to the elite competitor. Do yourself a favor and drop in to give yourself a chance to change your life, It changed mine! more

GREAT SCHOOL!! 7/23/2010

GREAT SCHOOL! Pros: Instruction, Hours, Facility, Friendly, Technique more

I'm glad I found this place. 11/19/2009

Been wanting to train for years but just couldn't find a place that matched my schedule. Trained briefly at another gym but wasn't happy with the lack of structure, trainers or students. Pros: Excellent instruction. Cool people. more

Best gym around! 11/17/2009

Classes all day with expert coaches in every area of MMA. Positive people and a very nice facility. The goofy looking Muay Thai coach with the chipped tooth was awesome! Pros: Great coaches and training environment more

Quality for fun or competition 11/16/2009

I spent a couple of years at another local gym and developed an ok grappling game. The quality of instruction and the open encouragement to continually explore has taken me to a better level in a very short time. You can't beat the price - nowhere in the PDX area can you get quality training and training partners for the price. Pros: Relaxed, friendly, kid friendly and a super good vibe Cons: Not enough time for me to train more

The most student focused gym I have ever seen... 11/16/2009

The flexibility of the schedule and the variety of training classes is what first attracted me to alive. Classes as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 1:30 am most days! They have everything from yoga to strength training and individual martial arts classes to full out mixed martial arts. What ever your fitness or competition goals may be, this is a gym prepared to help you achieve them. I took a risk and joined the gym without watching or trying a class, all it took was a conversation with the owner and I decided this place was worth a shot. In a very short time my expectations were surpassed as the owner and staff had come through on everything they had said, I feel as though I have been there for a year yet its barely been a month and at previous MMA gyms I have never seen this sense of community in a gym. It's not only a place for me to improve my MMA skills but quite possibly a place where i will create lasting relationships and grow as an individual and athlete. Pros: Flexable schedule, Top notch instructers, affordable Cons: that I dont have more time to train. more

A great community that focuses on helping all fighters 11/13/2009

I came to this gym with a bit of knowledge about Jiu-jitsu, but nothing special. Before joining, I really looked around town to see which place should get my business. Unfortunately, many places (certainly not all) seemed a bit haughty with new or lower level students. This is not the case with Alive. Bill, who runs the place, is a hoot. I don't know anyone who has tried a class there who hasn't finished the session having learned several things that directly impact their game and walked of the mat with a smile on their face. The positivity in the gym is infectious. I cannot highly enough recommend it. But honestly, don't take my word for it, go and check it out. Pros: Awesome, friendly, knowledgable, instructors. + atmosphere. Cons: Honestly, I haven't had a bad experience yet. more

Really fun and no attitude 11/12/2009

Alive MMA creates a real team atmosphere without losing its edge as a great MMA gym. You can train at your own pace without harsh criticism or rudeness. It's a special place and the Woodstock area just continues to add great new life to this area of Portland. Pros: Instruction style, so many levels blended together Cons: None really that I can think of more

The Best Spot in Portland to Learn Martial Arts and More... 11/12/2009

The variety of classes here is really wonderful and the instructors are just amazing. I never did any sort of Martial Art in my life, and I felt welcome and supported from day one. If you hate the monotony of the gym environment (treadmills, etc) but want a work out where you learn something, too- COME HERE. Pros: Supportive, welcoming, great instructors Cons: Can be intimidating if you don't step inside more
