The BEST gyro meat I've ever had 10/17/2011

Went on a Sunday evening and thoroughly enjoyed this spot!\r \r We loved the starter placed before us......the bread/dipping oil with feta and garlic....definitely over indulged in this treat.\r \r The BEST gyro meat I've ever had. Granted, I'm not a Greek aficionado, but this was a delicious dinner. The potatoes, (lemon) were delish. Stuffed shrimp/scallops dinner was just okay, the scallops were smallish and dry. Quail was moist and tender, mousakka was really good and Yia Yia's stuffed chicken breast was filled with tender asparagus.\r \r We'll go back. The waitress was very sweet and although there were only two other occupied tables, didn't hover.\r \r more

Wonderful!! 8/28/2011

Loved it!. Small place, very much like being over seas, the place cannot hold the masses so it was GREAT!. The music fab, and the entertainment was good. The belly dances was very good. The food was excellent and I have travelled extensively in the middle east and lived in Greece. We went on Saturday evening to celebrate my father's 80th B-Day and fun was had by all 13 of us. more

Who are these guys? 4/13/2011

I don't know who some of these whiners are who claim to have had bad experiences here. I'm from a Greek family and I can tell you that this place is the real deal! My wife and I eat here (usually on Sunday) on every trip we make into Houston. We have never had anything on the menu that was less than excellent. The waiter that we usually have even remembers that we like our saganaki prepared with Metaxa instead of Ouzo. The service has always been excellent. It is true that on Fri and Sat nights they have a $ minimum per table but this is to cover the entertainment (which btw is really cool!). Over the years I've had excellent Greek food all over Houston, including several places that are no longer in business but ATG is consistently at the top. more

HORRIBLE FIRST EXPERIENCE! 1/25/2011

This past Saturday (1/22/2011) I had my birthday at this venue along with a girlfriend of mine. Although I had never been, I love Greek food and the idea of the belly dancing show. I must say that I was very disappointed by how this restaurant operates. We had a party of about 25 people, logically we needed to split the bill according to each party. The restaurant had a problem with this and did not want to make too many transactions. Several people went to the atm to reduce the amount the transactions and broke it into 3 total bills instead. One of the girls in our party was not eating dinner as she had just eaten. The restaurant had a problem with this as well, they said that there was a $15 minimum for each individual. Wow, we have a huge party and people were drinking alcoholic beverages and you still demand a minimum per person when the rest of the guests are spending well over the minimum? To satisfy the restaurant the $15 were paid and the person did not order anything. \r \r When everyone finished eating, drank a bit more and had dessert (after a good 3 hrs) we requested that the bill be brought. 20 mins later we asked about the bill and the guy starts tallying up the bill and asks us what everyone had! We asked for the bill 20 mins ago, how is it possible that this waiter is going to start from scratch after being reminded for the bill! My spouse was not happy and told him that he should have figured this out the first time he was asked. The waiter was very rude and cocky and explained that this was a 4 star restaurant and told my spouse that he needed to figure the bill out himself! What? We were furious! We have been to much nicer restaurants and have never been treated this way. There was never an issue about the money, just the lack of efficiency and attention to detail. The manager did come over to the table but did little to make the situation better. At this point it had taken about an just to get the bill; ridiculous! I guess the waiter knew he would get his tip regardless so it didn’t bother him any. I was just dumbfounded at how poorly this situation was handled. And as far as the food goes, it was mediocre (I ordered the lamb shank), my friend ordered the pork tenderloin and that was actually very dry. Needless to say I will not be returning to this restaurant again! more

GREAT Greek food...Owners are jerks! 12/16/2010

I do not live in Houston, but travel there for medical reasons occasionally. My husband and I went to this restaraunt during one of these trips. The food was absolutely amazing! They even had a dessert that I have been looking for for years! So when I had to go back to another appointment, I was so pleased to see that they had restaraunt gift certificates for this restaraunt on the restaraunt site. They had several rules there, in order to use the gift certificate, but none seemed really far fetched. I brought my mother with me, and my toddler son. We ordered each a salad, and shared with my son. They told me that I could not use the coupon, because it was only 3:30, and dinner did not start until 4:00! We were there until well after 4, and I am quite certain that they charged dinner prices! Our salads were each $18, and that was for just the salad, and it had some chicken shawerma and gyro meat on it! So just don't plan to get any discounts, but the food is good! more

What an enjoyable evening! 10/17/2010

My husband and I escaped from the kids and family to try something new--boy were in for a surprise when we walked into ATG! Entertainment is always a plus for us in dining and this was definitely entertaining, warm, and fun atmosphere. We were greeted by the owners at the door, who offered us a nice table for two in the back yet with a great view of the trio band of gentlemen who played their traditional tunes. We enjoyed the beautiful music and the super great shaped belly dancer--made me want to get belly dancing lessons! Ok, here's my food opinion--and I am very honest because at my home...I am considered a food critique. The food was outstanding!!!!!!!! We started with the seafood apetitizer, and our main entre was the Greek sampler--superb to say the least!! Our waiter was very very nice....I was curious about the taste of Greek wines and he offered for us to taste a couple before deciding on a wine. Neatless to say, we didn't order Greek wine, although loved the Coffee martini--highly recommend it! Deserts were pleasing to the eye, although the Tiramisu was a little dry--would have preferred a creamier texture as well. Overall, if you like Greek food and ambience, we highly recommend this lovely restaurant that seems to enjoy the regulars as well as the newbies like us--who most likely will continue to return on our next special occasion!! Great place for dining 11/9/2009

From the moment you walk in, the experience begins from the hostess to the waiters. \r \r The service was on point, the atmosphere and the food was wonderful! This is a fun place to go on a Saturday night! They have live music that gets many up to dance and that just adds to the overall fun vibe of this place! \r \r All in all I put my Greek stamp of approval on Alexander the Great. It absolutely satisfies my craving for Greek food and represents Greek dining well.\r \r I would recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and family. My friends and I had a great time and will definitely be back!\r \r Pros: Horiatiki salad Cons: I can't think of any more

Good food and good service 7/12/2009

My daughter, 16 minth old grandson and I went for a late lunch today, Sun. Eating out with the toddler has become tough, but everyone was very accepting of his exploring and less than perfect behavior. He did like the food, as did his mother and I. The salad was delicious. as was the dip for the bread. I had the lemon chicken, and could have eaten a whole serving of just the pasta.\r \r The chicken was very good, but I adored the pasta.\r My daughter had the Gyro plate and it was excellent. The lemony potatoes were the icing on the cake, along with the $1 off all drinks from 3-7, even on Sun.\r Cole even had seconds on the veggies. The portions are generous. We could easily have all shared the Gyro platter.\r We will be back to try some of the other dishes and desserts, which looked killer::-) Pros: Everything was good more

Are you kidding me? 1/27/2009

I frequently visit Alexander the Great and find the previous comments hard to believe. They were posted some time ago so I hope that if your in the mood for Greek food you look past those silly rants. My experience has always been great. The food is always fresh and delicious. I especially love the Bronzini and the lamb but there has not been a menu item ordered that I haven't enjoyed. The service has always been prompt and courteous. Servers are very friendly and very helpful with the menu. Fridays and Saturday nights are always fun with the music and belly dancing. I was surprised with a birthday party there and we had a great time. I have noticed that if you don't have a reservation you may have to wait a few minutes for a table but that alone lends to the popularity of the place. In a city full of chain restaurants it's nice to have an individual family owned establishment that you can get fine meal and have a great time. \r more

poor customer service 3/1/2008

Waited for over 25 minutes for a sandwich. horrible service for the amount paid. Will never go again. more

Overrated 2/8/2008

Nothing 'fine' about it. Food is average and service is painfully slow. Our waiter was unfriendly, nonchalant at best. Went for the first time...will never go back. Cons: has nothing going for it...why are they in business? more

terrible service! 10/10/2007

These people definitely need a lesson on customer service!! We ordered a sampler platter and when we asked the waiter what the items were, he rudely said he didn't know. Then he felt bad and proceeded to quickly and abruptly tell us what each items were before rushing off. The restaurant was not busy so there is no excuse for the grumpy old waiter. The food was average. I have had better Greek food elsewhere. Also, the restaurant hours are incorrect on the menu and website. This was an inconvenience when I had a group meet there for a birthday brunch. Would not go there again!!! more

Great food 9/13/2007

I really love mediterranean food and this is one of my favorite places. I go several times a month. Everything at this place is good--I've never had a bad meal. Excellent lamb and desserts! more

Exellent service, okay food 8/8/2007

I went here on a Friday night. The food was okay, maybe slightly above average. If you want really great greek food, I'd probably stick to Niko Niko's. If you want greek food with a nice ambiance, I'd go for Yia Yia Mary's. We had the smoked salmon with caviar spread for appetizers, and the gyro platter and mousaka for dinner. It was all average, not the best I've ever had, not the worst either. The wine recommended by the waiter was unimpressive, but I won't complain for the cost (about $6/glass). Otherwise, the service was excellent. There was also a belly dancer who performed to a live band and captive audience. Overall I would only recommend going here if you can't make it to one of the other two restaurants I listed above, or if you want to avoid crowds. Pros: Complimentary valet parking, excellent service, not crowded Cons: average food more

Great authentic greek experience...including belly dancing! 7/19/2007

I took some out of town guests to Alexander the Great and we had a great time. It was a Wednesday evening but they had a belly dancer performing from 8:00-8:30 that night, and she was great. Of course, the food is what is most important and was exceptional in taste, portion, and temperature. I had the PASTICHIO and it was excellent, kind of like a Greek lasagna. The prices are reasonable for Galleria area, and the atmosphere is a relaxed one so you can feel free to engage in conversation and have a good time. A great place for groups as well. It wasn't very ""romantic"", but if you're looking for something different to do with your significant other its a great place to go. The service was personal and very friendly as well, and the live musician made for an atmosphere that felt like a Greek party with plenty of smiles and laughter to go around. Pros: Live music, atmosphere, great service, live entertainment Cons: Not that romantic for a first date more

My new favoriate restuarant!! 4/22/2007

If you want to feel like you arrived to Greece for dinner, this is the place. Wonderful food, service and atmosphere. Fantastic mousaka, belly dancing, live music, great service......oh my gosh! We loved it! Most of their wines are Greek, so I asked the waitress what she recommended on their wines. I described what I like, and she brought me a small sample of their Greek wine. How awesome was that! I actually enjoyed the sample and decided on that particular wine. I've never been to a place that has done that before. Great place to bring friends who like to experience a different/authentic way of dining. Bring the family and the kids! They will really enjoy atmosphere. My whole family (husband with teenagers) loved everything about it! As we were enjoying our Greek wine with our Greek food, we were ALL trying to plan out our next dining experience at Alexander The Great's with our friends and family. We will be back very soon! Pros: Ambience, energetic, wonderful food, valet parking, service, reservations accepted, homemade desserts Cons: tucked away behind Galleria more

Best Greek Food In Houston!!! 12/19/2006

I can't believe I didn't find this place sooner. I love Greek food and this is definitely the cream of the crop for Greek cuisine. I've been to Greece a few times on vacation, and this is the first time I've been to a place in Houston where the food is as good as the best I've had in Greece. When I went on Friday, they had live Greek music and an attractive belly dancer. I've been during the week after shopping across the street at the Galleria and it was much more low key, a good way to get out of the Galleria crowd. Try the ""saganaki"" which they light on fire at your table. The calamari was also very fresh, light, and crispy. On Friday, I had the lamb chops which were cooked the perfect amount and incredibly tender. The week before I went more traditional with the mousaka and followed it up with the best baklava I've ever had. My girlfriend had the flaky topped sweet custard desert (the name is slightly more difficult to say). All I can say is we'll be back again next week. Pros: hands down best greek food, welcoming staff, perfect date place, free valet, don't need reservations Cons: easy to miss going west on hidalgo (one way) from the galleria, turn in before you get to sage more

Not Great Greek Food! 10/8/2006

I have eaten here in the past and since the new owner has taken over I would not recommend. They no longer have hummus on the menu, the Greek salad has changed for the worse. I think there are plenty of Greek restaurants with MUCH better food and for less. Pros: there is never anyone in the restaurant so large groups can get in quickly more
