Best

An oasis of good food and margaritas close to UW's South Campus Agua Verde has long been a favorite of students, faculty, staff, & patients

Worst

The food was good but it does need more flavor. Not the worst I've ever had. I've been back a few times. Being from CA I wouldn't call this Mexican food though. More like a white ...

Fun kayaking and awesome Mexican and margaritas! 10/8/2005

I went here with some friends to try out kayaking in Lake Union. I have never kayaked before, but the staff was very helpful and friendly and the sea kayaks they have for rent were very easy to use and fun to paddle. We went all around Lake Union with some tips from the staff and had a great time. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and then next time someone from out of town comes to visit me I am definitely taking them here! It was a little expensive though if you do it a lot they have multiple use passes and packages you could choose. After kayaking, go up to the Cafe for some fantastic Mexican (probalby the best I've had in Seattle - try the halibut tacos!!!) and tasty margaritas! If it is nice out you can sit on the deck. It is can be really crowded though, so be prepared to wait for a table. more

Try the mangodilla! 9/24/2005

The mangodilla might sound like a giant japanese horror villian, but it is the best thing on the menu at Agua Verde. Yummy melted cheese, mangos, what's not to love! The food is great and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. There is often a wait, but it's worth it. Try the happy hour. The menu is limited, but great snacks to finish off the work day! more

Creative Mexican 9/19/2005

Agua Verde is excellent and therefore very popular. Expect to wait in line. It's a little chaotic to get in there, find the line, put your name down, order drinks, get your table, etc. The restaurant is in a little "beach shack" with multiple small rooms, a deck and a nice screened in porch on the water. The best dish they had, in my opinion, were the shrimp tacos, which they no longer served. I still crave those tacos all the time. All their food is pretty authentic. The salsa bar and margaritas are the high-lights. I would recommend the fajitas and for sure try their spicy mashed potatoes. The prices are very reasonable and the wait staff friendly. more

Standard Tex-Mex 9/8/2005

Agua Verde has a great atmosphere and uneven food quality. The much touted fish dishes are too dry and salty, but the pork tacos are very good. The salsa is also disappointly too sweet. You can't beat the view of the water from the deck. The menu is quite extensive and happy hour is available. This restaurant is also almost always very crowded so expect a wait for a table. Service is efficient and the drink list is very long. Agua Verde also rents out kayaks but the rentals are somewhat pricey. Overall a good choice on a sunny day when you have the time to wait. more

Authentic Atmosphere; Inconsistent Service 8/23/2005

The perfect place for a rustic and casual dining experience overlooking Lake Union. I would imagine this would be a great place to watch the crews begin workouts as the autumn sun sets. The food is fresh with inventive ingredients and a delicious drink menu. The downside? Small portions and servers are often "too cool" college students who would rather be doing a ANYthing but waiting on you. more

Agua Verde 8/23/2005

I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Agua Verde - sure, the views are great and the margaritas are good, but the food leaves something to be desired. I found the tortillas to be... rather raw and mealy, and the fillings of several tacos I've had there has been rather bland and uninspiring. Some people loooove Agua Verde, but it gets a pass in my book. more

Authentic Mexican Food with ambiance 8/21/2005

The Agua Verde Paddle Club is located in the University district on the cannal that links Lake Washington and Lake Union. It's a cafeteria style restaurant, you place your order, then pay at the cash register where you recieve your drinks and a paper mache fruit so that the server can find you with your food. Then you have a choice of three rooms and two outdoor decks, one covered, to find a table in. The covered deck is staight out from the main room, and overlooks the canal. The rooms are all brightly coloered using vibrant green, blue and pink for the different rooms. The other deck is off of the pink room and only usable during good weather. The food here is fabulous. They make all their food from scatch. Many of the selections use fresh fish. All of the food comes from certified organic wholesellers. There are vegitarian options as well. If you want to go to Mexico without leaving the state, eat here, you won't be dissapointed. more

Give kayaking a try at this gem of a place 8/20/2005

My husband and I were introduced to Aqua Verde when we had to rent kayaks there for a friend's wedding (yes, you read that right). Aqua Verde staff were friendly and helpful (especially for those os us not too coordinated at getting in our boats). We had been kayaking before, but it seemed like a good place if you wanted to give the sport a try without investing in a lot of expensive equipment. Aqua Verde also offers season passes for kayaking as well as hourly or daily rentals. Rates and directions are available on the Aqua Verde website. I haven ever had the chance to try the café onsite, but have always heard good things about it---especially the Boniato (yam) tacos. Go kayaking though the lily pads of Lake Washington and come back hungry! Parking can be beastly, so be prepared. No reservations accepted other than for groups of 8 or more. more

Tacos! 8/20/2005

Not your average Mexican food. Some Oaxacan influrence. Try the boniato (yam) or nopalitos(cactus) tacos for something interesting. Best balcony in the University District with unobstructed views of the bay. All the alcohol is way overpriced, but the tuna-rita is a good choice if you must. It switches from Cafe to sit-down at about 4:30 in the afternoon. more

Excellent launch point for kayak rentals 8/20/2005

Agua Verde Paddle Club, located on Portage Bay in the University District, rents kayaks by the hour that fit one, two or three people. The boats are in good repair and the staff is very helpful if you’re new to paddling (as long as you let them know). But the best thing is the location—from Portage bay you can either head right under the Unviersity Bridge to paddle around lake Union and take in the seaplanes and downtown sights, or take a left to head past the UW campus and Arboretum onto Lake Washington. Either way, you can take in an awful lot in an hour. I don’t know how the pricing compares to other rental places, but in the summer a one-seater kayak is around $15/hr. and a two seater is $18/hr. (I believe). more

Agua Verde 8/19/2005

this is not your typical mexican. the food is truly excellent but a bit more gourmet and healthy from the run of the mill mexican joing. you wont find any refried beans here but the sides of pinto or black beans and spanish rice are great. the best thing to eat is the pork sandwhich. a great shredded pork with onions, truly amazing. there is a great deck looking over the canal so you can relax and get some sun when the weathers nice and eat some great food. more

The Best 8/19/2005

This is the best place to eat on the Ave. (semi ave at least). This place has an awesome view and very very good food. It is alittle bit more expensive but worth every penny. The best thing about this place (other then the food) is the out door seating. On nice days you won't want to leave. Also, the wait staff is very friendly unlike some other restaurants on the Ave. more

Canoe padding 8/18/2005

This is something to do on a warm day. The price is right - cheap and its a great way to do something differant. You can paddle around lake union - as long as you keep close to shore and enjoy the scenery. You can go by the Sleepless in Seattle area where Tom Hanks lived on the boat house. Bring a small cooler of food and drink to take on the canoe with you and have a picnick while floating around. It does take effort to padde and stear the canoe though, and be sure to wear clothes that can get a little wet. more

YUMMY! Best Mexican Food in Seattle 8/17/2005

Fresh, fresh, fresh. The food here is absolutely excellent. The variety is great. The view is wonderful. I just can't say enough good things about the place. Even the service is exceptional. Most importantly to me, the menu is full of healthy and interesting foods that I've never tried. It is a far cry from the cookie cutter typical Mexican food in the area. I visit at least once a month, and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. more

Tasty and fun 8/17/2005

This place is one of my favorite places to eat in Seattle. They are a nice change of pace from the usual bean and rice burritos. The location is great- right on the water by UW. I get really excited about the yam tacos and margaritas. My only wish is that they would serve better chips with their awesome salsa. (they taste like tostitos). There is often a line when they first open, so plan accordingly, especially on a sunny day. Sometimes the take-out window is the best option and you can go sit outside. As you can guess from the name, they also rent boats of some sort, but I've never gotten that far ;) more

Awesome unusual mexican food in a great location 8/16/2005

Agua Verde is a real gem located right on the water near the University of Washington. There are lots of great options: blackened catfish tacos, yam tacos, etc. My favorite thing to do is to order "3 Sides" which comes with 3 hot tortillas. Some of the options are: jalipeno mashed potatos, pozole, cilantro rice, jicama coleslaw and on. In addition, there is a fresh salsa bar which is always brimming with delicious fresh salsa options. There are plently of good vegetarian options and what look like really good margaritas in addition to the usual non-alcoholic Jamaica, Horchata and lemonades. more

Sun, water and mango-dillas! 8/16/2005

What a great place. Not only do they serve superb Baja-style tacos (filled with fried fish, or sweet potatoes, or carnitas, or four or five other goodies) and the amazing mango-dilla (melty cheese, onions and peppers, and slices of fresh mango), but they do it in a gorgeous setting. Sit on the deck overlooking Lake Union and watch the kayakers. Or rent one yourself downstairs and work up an appetite. If you're thirsty enough, you might need a mango-rita afterwards with your taco. more

Great Guacamole and Margaritas! 8/10/2005

Agua Verde is a great place for lunch or drinks on the water. Their servings are generous, and the drinks are tasty, especially during happy hour when the prices go down. Make sure to try to Tunarita, a prickly pear juice drink. The restaurant is often crowded because of its proximity to the UW, so be prepared to wait a bit for your food. During the warmer months you can sit out on the deck and watch people paddling by. more

Don't believe the hype 7/28/2005

Agua Verde isn't that good. Below average tacos, average salsa and terrible service. The location is nice, but there are plenty of places you can grab some good to-go food w/out having to deal w/that much 'tude. My advice - take the quick drive over to Fremont and grab a sandwich at Paseo. Then you can go sit by the water anywhere along the cut and enjoy a fantastic meal. more

Rules, Rules, Rules 7/15/2005

#1 All people must be present before they will seat your group. #2 You can wait for your group on the patio. #3 You can order drinks and chips at the counter. #4 You must pay for chips even if you're waiting for a table. #5 If you are pregnant and starving you can order a take out appetizer instead. #6 You must order and pay inside but then wait outside at the take out window. #6 You cannot eat this appetizer on the patio. #7 Three employees must be aggressively rude in telling you this after. #8 The staff cannot make any exceptions to any of the above rules even if you are part of a group spending well over $300 on dinner and drinks. I am assuming due to its popularity the staff considers themselves exempt from the concept of customer service. more
