An oasis of good food and margaritas close to UW's South Campus Agua Verde has long been a favorite of students, faculty, staff, & patients

The food was good but it does need more flavor. Not the worst I've ever had. I've been back a few times. Being from CA I wouldn't call this Mexican food though. More like a white ...

Like this place on sunny days 4/27/2012

Great for kids on sunny days as you can eat outside near the water and not worry about kids making a mess. There's parks nearby. Food is authentic, fast, and good. Favorites are the fish tacos and burritos. more

Killer mexican food 7/8/2011

I've eaten here a few times and I'm glad I did every time I leave. The food is amazing, the chips are awesome. Just be very aware that if you're going to order chicken in your quesadilla (and you order the full quesadilla) they charge you for two portions of chicken. I was a little bummed about that. BUT If you want good food and a fun view you should really try this place out. more

try Agua Verde 4/8/2007

along Portage Bay in the U-District. I too find it hard to find non-greasy food, and even more expensive restaurants just pile on the oil. People go there for the views and proximity to kayak rental, but I go there for the fantastic homeade Mexican food. They use the best ingredients, and is not too expensive. Their salsas are unbeatable. Be warned, though: Agua Verde is a beautiful place to go on a nice day, so expect crowds and confusion unless you go on a rainy day. And because most people go there regularly, the procedures for getting your food/menu/where to sit which seem normal to regulars can be confusing. The staff are very busy, but the place is filled with happy customers, so just strike up a conversation with those around you when you have questions more

Love it. 10/17/2006

just wish the lines weren't so long! also, they should make the back deck more open... more

Fresh delicious Mexican! 9/18/2006

I heard it was good Mexican food so my husband and I walked down (we live by the campus) on a Monday evening to check it out. Though crowded we were seated right away close to the water. Beautiful. The server was horrible. Trying to charge us for every little thing. Definitely bad service. You can tell she just did not care. I'm hoping its just a flux and service can be good? Yet to be seen... Unfortunately they can get away bad service because the food is soooooooooooo good. Very fresh and light but extremely tasty. We got the famous spicy catfish tacos and devoured it. The ceviche is delicious as well! (Note they charge you extra for the chips to eat it with!) Anyway we will be back, probably many times. Probably not a good idea to go on the weekends because of crowds and be wary of the cost. But the ambiance and food makes up for all that!!! I will have to rent a kayak soon. :) more

Don't confuse great summer atmosphere with great food. 7/13/2006

Only in a city where quality Mexican restaurants are about as prevalent as Mariner playoff games would the fare at Aqua Verde be considered even average - and that's a stretch. I'm assuming the excellent location, the ability to paddle your kayak, and the gorgeous views are clouding some reviewers' minds. Otherwise, I'll have to believe that few have had Mexican food outside of Washington, because Aqua Verde's bland and uninspiring dishes, while not cheap, taste like they should be. Go for the atmosphere, just eat before you go. more

Fun in the Sun! 7/1/2006

One of my favorite summer activities is to drive out to Boat Street by UW campus, go to Agua Verde and rent a kayak. Kayak about Lake Washington for awhile. The trip there is fun, it gets very rough around the Montlake Cut. Check out Bill G's house from a distance. If you want a smoother ride, you can paddle around underneath 520. When done, grab some Mexican grub at Agua Verde and check out their huge selection of margaritas!!! more

Great atmosphere but bad fish tacos 6/23/2006

This place has a great atmosphere and great drinks but the food is pretty bad. I have eaten there three times and have never had anything good. The chips are out of a bag (not home-made) and the fish tacos are horrible. They smell so fishy! You need to drown them in sauce. But get a drink and grab a kayak and have a great time! For cheap Mexican food, I recommend Gorditos! more

Agua Verde Cafe & Paddle Club 6/22/2006

If you're standing in line to get the best to-go ordered taco in the City, you're probably at Agua Verde It's popular, it's a bit cramped inside, and the location is a little off the beaten path, but it is enticing, it's relatively quiet outside, and a great location if you're at the UW Med center or the University. People rave about the flavors and they're right, but it does cost a little bit more and if you just want a cheap place to eat, you probably won't like it. When you go, expect to wait in line for at least five or ten minutes, because it is good. They apparently rent kayaks too -- I have not, so cannot comment on that, other than to say a burrito on the lake sounds nice. more

A U-District Find 5/17/2006

I love going out to lunch, that is no secret, I especially love when I find a really good place. Agua Verde is one of those places. It is a cute little Mexican cafe, casual, at lunch, they serve cafeteria style - you order, pay and sit down, they bring you your food. Everything is uniquely healthy and fresh, delicious and what a view of the ship canal. The prices are decent, you can easily have lunch and a drink for under $10. more

We're not in Mexico anymore señor Toto.. (we're standing in line at Aqua Verde) 5/14/2006

I had some pretty high hopes for this place. I had heard nothing but good things.. But from the moment I arrived it was nothing but misery. Am I really the only one that had an awful experience? ..or just a bad day for AV? When I arrived I was greeted by a line going out the door which wasn't a surprise, I knew it would be busy. But the frustrating part was it was a line for people waiting to get drinks from the bar/window combined with people wanting a table and those just wondering how they get in. After we got all the way in we discovered we were going to have a 45 min wait we decided to get back in line and get a margarita and hang out (as many others seemed to be doing). We did this only to find there is no place to "hang out". There is no bar or lounge area and there it is illegal to take your drinks outside and just walk around so you have to wait in this tiny crowded area and drink your drink. It was so unorganized. Just by looking around you could see how confused and frustrated many were at how the entrance operated. When we finally got a table we found the service to be lackluster and were surprised that we had to order tortilla chips separately. The chips we received appeared to be the kind out of a bag at your local Safeway (not homemade). We had fish tacos which were great but we both ordered with rice and beans and neither arrived with rice and beans (which also were extra). The tacos themselves were great but certainly not good enough to warrant this headache. The fresh lime margaritas were great but not worthy of a 7 dollar price tag considering they are literally the size of a shot glass! I left AV frustrated and can safely say that I wont be back. I could see how this place might have been a "best kept secret" once upon a time but its hard to see that now. Its just too small for this kind of volume and way too unorganized. I would think they would profit greatly in customer satisfaction (and bar sales) if they somehow added a bar/waiting area. more

Agua Verde-Delicioso! 5/9/2006

I just went here last night and although I would've given it a great review before, I'm even more certain that this place rocks. It's not only a great place to eat, but it's also a kayak it rents kayaks! Back to the food. Delicious. I had a yam taco (I usually get the mangodilla) which was so good. They have vegetarian options (and can make some things vegan upon request) too. Yummy drinks, both alcoholic and non. It's a loud place, so it's not for the subdued. It has a youthful feel to it and very vibrant colors. Sometimes there's live music as well. more

Perfect for summer 5/4/2006

I love coming here in the summer. They have delicious chips and salsa and margaritas and are right on the water. What more can you ask for on a summer evening! You can literally rent kayaks here and get in the water after dinner, though hopefully you haven't had too many of those margaritas. :) more

Tasty Mexican food on the water! 4/21/2006

Aqua Verde is usually packed with people throughout the day and for good reason too! You can walk if you are near the UW or you can drive - they have free parking! The Mexican food is delicious and so are their drinks - check out their extensive drink list which includes great house-made drinks. They have a great patio to sit outside on and to enjoy the view of the water. Or you can sit inside - sometimes its hard to find a seat, but once you do find one you can enjoy your chips and salsa from the yummy salsa bar. I highly recommend the Mero Tacos and a Tuna-rita! They also have a window outside that you can walk up to and order food from - if it's too packed inside and out on their patio I suggest ordering from the window and taking it around the corner to the picnic tables on the water. See photo of us after finishing our tasty lunch! more

Best Place EVER! (perhaps) 3/29/2006

Thats right - I will be so bold and to tell everyone that this is a fantastic establishment and that everyone should go..and not just to the restaurant but to the Kayak store below as well. Heres a plan for you: go and rent a kayak (UW students get a 15% discount) - they rent both single and double being more expensive...then after exploring Lake Union and Lake Washington paddle back in and return your kayak..then immediately go upstairs and get some great Mexican food. They offer 3 different types of salsa at their salsa bar. And please - get the Halibut Fish Tacos!! They are superb!!!! Don't forget a tasty margarita on the side!! Enjoy a great day! more

GREAT food! 3/21/2006

Truly great Mexican food. I grew up in South Texas, so after being here for 15 years, I'd totally given up on finding any good Mexican food (although Gordito's came close). I enjoy the atmosphere here too, and that the people who work there and own it are just good people and good cooks. Cheap, easy, reliable, tasty, convenient, clean. I'm ever so glad that they have an espresso stand outside and that they have Mexican chocolate!!! I can't seem to do it justice when I'm at home. I hope they stay in business a long time. more

More fun than you expect and AWESOME food 12/21/2005

I really did NOT want to go kayaking at all on the day that my sister and boyfriend dragged me to Agua Verde for kayaking and dinner. It turned out to be one of the most fun things I've done in Seattle! I've never been kayaking before, but the employees at Agua Verde were really nice and friendly and informative and helpful. It was great! We kayaked around Lake Union and it really wasn't that hard. It was beautiful and really fun! Then we went back and had the best halibut tacos I've ever had at the Cafe. The whole experience was great and I've been back to the Cafe several times since for yummy mexican food and drinks. By the way, you rent the kayaks by the hour, I believe, and they have special memberships or a club or something you can participate in if you kayak a lot. It wasn't the cheapest thing we could have done that day, but it was so worth it! The next time anyone visits me in Seattle I'm definitely taking them there for kayaking and food! more

Consistently outstanding mexican food 12/11/2005

Agua Verde serves great food -- be it lunchtime meals, appetizers, dinners or to-go options. You can't lose if you go with any of the fish tacos, especially 'el mero' (halibut). Also, the salsas, specifically the chipolte, are awesome! If you need an extra something to go with the meal, order pico de gallo and a serving of guacamole -- the perfect additions! While there is often a wait for a table, the restaurant is definitely worth it and once you are seated, the food arrives quickly! Also visit Agua Verde to enjoy one of several tasty margaritas. (All of which are delicious!) The food and drinks are affordable, but for those watching their spending, come by Agua Verde after the work day to enjoy happy hour specials! more

Nice view - good for lunch 11/29/2005

Food was good but not great - I liked the different kinds of salsa that I could sample from. Great view - nice choice for a clear, warm summer day for lunch. more
