I had a horrible experience with Aegis, especially the care givers for the dementia section called Life's Neighborhood. My Mother stayed there for about a year. When she arrived she was walking,however as she progressed with dementia we had to place her on more medication. One of which was a sedative to be used only if she was agitated. Aegis continued to sedate her to the point she was not eating, drinking and laid in bed non responsive. I brought this to the attention of the executive director, the nurse responsible for the medication and the care givers. Nothing was done. We brought in hospice and they discovered she hadn't been given water or food for days. She was in a comatose state, barely breathing due to over sedation. They stopped the sedative and gave her water. By the next day she was out of bed and talking, eating and drinking. Had hospice not been called in she would have been dead by the next day.
The second experience was with a care giver whom I witnessed screaming and yelling at my mother (she didn't know I was standing behind her) and forcing her mouth open to eat. She kept telling my mother that she didn't have to be there helping her and she needed to open her mouth and eat. My 90 year old mother was begging her to stop yelling at her, telling her she would be good. I was OUTRAGED! I feared she would retaliate against my mother when I wasn't there. I contacted the executive director who did nothing. The other care givers where afraid to say anything. I also contacted the Ombudsman in Alameda County who did nothing except to tell me it was good that I moved her out of there. I was afraid for the other residents there. Other family members indicated the same experience with this care giver. Her name is Sataya. Be Very Concerned if she is ever helping one of your loved ones!! She will put on a good front in the beginning.
When I moved my Mother, remember she has dementia and could not talk very well. She begged me not to take her back there. No one should ever have to experience this kind of care, let alone at Aegis where they charge a high price and make you think they are the best.
