Dissatisfied with customer service and attention to detail 8/9/2011

Between May-August, we had a new metal shingle roof installed, an overhang added, and seamless gutters installed. Job took much longer than expected. Frequently called owner, who would state each time that they would come to finish the job ""in a few days"". Well, those ""few days"" took weeks, and it wasn't until they wanted the next payment that they would finally show up. Roof installation looked fine, only concern was that some of the shingles had been nailed on top, instead of being nailed and then the next piece layered over the previous. (My understanding is that nailing over both layers of shingles can cause small holes that allow leaks to get through, but maybe this isn't the case with metal roofs?). When gutters were installed, part of the siding was cut off to make room for the gutter edge, but was not put back afterwards, leaving a hole on each side of the house. We requested that this be fixed, but unfortunately they simply nailed on a piece of white metal over the holes, not bothering to make anything seamless or match like it did previously. Since we paid a lot, we did expect the job to be detail-oriented, but this was not the case. The workers used our trash bins to throw away large pieces of material that the garbage collectors would not take. Not only that, but they left large pieces of wood on the side of our house that we normally do not go on, with NAILS sticking out of them, and on the grass (by the time we noticed this the grass was already dead and brown). Cigarette butts were also left around the house. We requested that they throw away their own trash, and they said that they would be right on it, but it took at least another full week before they took the trash. They also left a ladder up against the side of our house for a few weeks. The owner did ask us if it was alright, but at that point in time the plan was for the team to come back within a day or so to finish the job. After a couple weeks I called and mentioned the ladder, and even mentioned the fact that small children in the area could get hurt (at this point I still didn't know about the wood that they also could have gotten hurt on! not to mention a big lawsuit for us!). The owner said that he would get the ladder ASAP, but once a few days went by, I had to get the neighbor to bring it down for us. One word of advice for anyone that is getting big projects like this done...don't pay up front, and get it in writing in the contract to pay at the end of the job. That way, there's always motivation to do a good job, and a timely one. Once you pay, your priority goes way down. Document everything, and take your time when reviewing their work. Good luck! more
