One of the worst gyms I have ever seen 1/11/2011

I would recommend you not agree to a long contract here. For the past year (you are committed to a year if you don't want to pay a lot more for your membership), I have seen a number of people start this gym and quit after a short time. The facility is dirty, the teachers are not committed to their classes and start late and end early --I have seen one teacher run out of the classroom before the students pack up -- and in my own personal experience, after one such classes, she raced out of the parking lot in a truck and almost hit me. The class started 20 minutes late and stopped after 25 minutes. In most gyms the owners look at how many students are in each class as an indicator to their happiness. This particular class only had TWO students and I never went back again after the aforementioned incident. There is no point in getting ready for a class and rushing to be on time to find the teacher starts really late and then does not even teach the class for more than 25 minutes even when the schedule said it was a 1 hour class and there was not a class before or after it -- it was at noon. The other student said that she would be there when I asked after 15 minutes if she thought the teacher would show up. She said she had seen her out on the gym floor and that she was always late. The classrooms are filthy and the classes do not seem to be taught for the students. Most students cannot keep up and I have seen new students start classes and then leave after 10 or 15 minutes and have had one tell me that they just couldn't do it. Most of the classes never start on time and I have never seen a teacher go over the poast stop time to make up for the lost time, have teachers that talk about their vacations and other jobs DURING the classes, people use cell phones in the facilities and even during classes, music is obnoxiously loud during some of the classes. One of the classes had no light in the room (hip hop type dance class) and artificial smoke blowing into the classroom to create some type of ambiance, along with music that was unbelievably loud, so that it was obvious it was hurting the ears of a number of students. When the teacher was asked to turn down the music, she refused. Don't even think about talking to the owner about any problems. I tried this. She is not concerned. Remember, once you sign up, you are in an ironclad contract for a year and there are always new people making New Year's resolutions. Parking is attrocious. And, yet, where are the people? Oftentimes, there is no parking and you see only a few people in the club. Perhaps people use the parking lots while they are going out of town? I have never been able to figure this one out. Also, if you think that a class is going to be similar to something you have been accustomed to at other clubs -- ie., regular yoga being yoga, or pilates being equal to pilates at other clubs, or Zumba being what it is at other clubs, in my experience, it is not. I will not extend my membership. Oh, and a very large mirror fell off the wall and hit a member in the back. I would say, at the least, insist on trying it for a month before you commit to more time. It is too expensive to find out after you are in a contract which you cannot break that this place is dirty, you will be asked for money and participation in charity events (which, incidentally, preempt regular classes taught here so that you are not only not getting the classes and time that were supposed to be included in your membership but you are also asked to support someone else's charities), the classes are not as posted on the schedules, and the teachers do not seem at all concerned whether students are getting hurt because they aren't getting properly warmed up, aren't being listened to at all. These are just a very few of the problems you will most likely experience if you join Devon Fitness in Devon, PA. more
