I paid my first visit to CARMAX of Orlando based on a few friend's recommendations. As usual, I did my homework before I went. I had printed, solid information on my trade in value ($20,000) and the retail value of the vehicle I was interested in ($23,000). I knew in advance that the particular truck I was interested in was priced $2000 too high by CARMAX (they priced it at $25,000). I test drove the truck anyway, sat down with my salesman, and had my trade-in appraised. CARMAX appraised my vehicle at $16,000 and offered to roll the $4,000 of negative equity into my new loan. I tried not to laugh. I explained that I do not have negative equity and that their appraisal was incorrect. And further that I have documentation from three sources of my vehicle's trade in value. My salesman then explained that the added $4000 would only increase my payment by $50 or so.
