Watermen's Museum in Yorktown, Virginia is a great place to go, for kids and adults. The Watermen's Museum features lots of information on how Colonial watermen used to live. The museum which is located very close to the York River, is very fun and informative. You can have a great time at the museum, and then go swimming at the beach or take a walk through the new "Riverwalk" that has been set up along the York River. The museum is great for kids and is not very expensive.
