If you're a New York transplant like me you get strange cravings at all hours of the night for potato pancakes, black and white cookies, matzo ball soup, and pastrami sandwiches stack high on rye bread.
Living in Santa Monica you're faced with fancy food and a city that shuts down around 9:30.
However, as you drive around the city that oves to sleep you'll find a beacon of hope... a shimmering star in the distance in Izzy's deli.
A kid from Brooklyn couldn't find a deli in LA so he built one. Everything in this place is great including the service and the prices. You can't go wrong.

It's hard not to fill up on the scrumptious foccacia and dipping oil, but save room for fabulous pastas, salads, and minestrone. It isn't on the menu, but you can order one of the fancy dinner slads in a small size to accompany your meal for just a few bucks. Parking is difficult unless you opt for valet.

Sunset Grill is a very cute little restaurant tucked in the heart of the Sunset Park Neighborhood of Santa Monica. They offer a number of great menu items including salads, omlettes, and pastas. But the real highlights for me are their baked goods including muffins and all sorts of chocolate cakes (and other things too like cookies and cheesecakes). My family stops in at least a few times per week. The food is always good and the staff is very friendly. There are also a few nice tables to sit out outside. Last item to note is in addition to the standard American fare, there are a few dishes with carribean influence as well, giving you even move interesting choices.

If you're craving deli food, particularly matzo ball soup, this is a good place to go. The menu is pretty standard: giant sandwiches, salads, soups, omelettes. The food is hearty more so than healthy (about what you'd expect from a deli) and a bit overpriced. On the whole, everything's about a buck or two more than it should be. The place is next door to a Coldstone Creamery, so parking can be scarce, especially during the summer months.

Callahan's is a greasy spoon with no ambiance and spotty service. Can't really give an assessment of the food itself because I never got a chance to order. After being seated and given some coffee (which was below average), I proceeded to wait. And wait, despite our waitress' promise that she'd be right back. When the couple that walked in after us placed their order and received their food, I called it quits. The cashier who took my money for the coffee was strikingly unperturbed that a customer was leaving because of dismal service.
