Visiting friends in Atlanta, I lucked upon this semi-hidden gallery and thought I was back in Chelsea. They might have the best selection of contemporary British artists in the Southeast. Ruth Franklin is a star - or should be. Chris Pig's prints are rock'n'roll on paper, or maybe punk rock. Too much talent to mention here, including Royal Society members and even a Warhol and a couple Eschers. Art lovers - pay attention!

The Decatur Library is a great, but under appreciated community resource. It's located in downtown Decatur, near the square, in a clean and modern building. The library has a nice computer room upstairs, which allows any Dekalb resident free internet access for half an hour a day. The library also has a nice reading room with a nice collection of up to date magazines and newspapers. It has a weak collection of cd's on site, but this is because the County system has a library on memorial that's devoted solely to Audio visual materials. But you can get into the Dekalb Library web site and reserve any item to be picked up at the library nearest you. For the most part, I buy my books now, but I still use the library to check out expensive books--art books, home design books, etc. I also make ample use of their cd collection. The library also has authors speak regularly and allows community organizations to use their meeting rooms.

The Decatur Cemetery is the nicest green space in downtown Decatur. It's located about 4 blocks NE of the square and covers over 50 acres. It's usually quiet here and you can walk through the paved roads here without seeing any cars. It's fine to bring your dog here on a leash and they provide mutt mitts to encourage cleanup. The grounds are covered with trees, a lake, a few old structures and graves. The older section of the cemetery is in the National Register of Historic Places and is fascinating to look through. At one time there was a mean duck that used to chase people away from the lake, so move away if you see him paddling your way.

The Creative Spirit is an art gallery with a focus on art and crafts for regular folks. It sells original paintings, crafts, jewelry, and handmade soap and candles. It also has lessons in the gallery so you can make your own art. It offers classes in pottery, stained glass and jewelry-making. I looked into the pottery classes, but when I inquired, they did not have classes on the wheel--just hand-building.

Bicycle South has a pretty large selection of bikes, but I don't think it's necessarily the best selection. I feel like they don't carry the best brands, at least in my mind, but someone else might think they're fine, so I guess it might just be my taste. Also, I find their parts to be a bit overpriced. I haven't had my bike serviced there, so I can't say anything as far as the quality of their services. Overall, if you really need a bike or parts, it's not a bad place to go to, but it's not the best place either.
